Belgian buns are a sweet pastry popular in the United Kingdom, though their origins are unclear and not directly tied to Belgium. The name "Belgian bun" might be a marketing invention, not a reflection of the bun's true heritage.
Belgian buns are usually round or spiral-shaped. They are made from a sweet dough enriched with butter and sometimes eggs, giving them a rich and tender crumb. These days, I usually make mine in a tray for convenience! However, you can place the dough on a tray, leaving enough space for the bun to bake individually.
They often contain currants or raisins and may include a layer of lemon curd.
The buns are typically glazed with white icing and topped with a glacé cherry.
The buns have a sweet and slightly tangy flavour, especially if lemon curd is included.
They share similarities with other sweet rolls and buns in Europe, such as Chelsea buns and Danish pastries, which also use enriched doughs and sweet fillings.
The "Belgian" in the name could have been added to evoke a sense of European sophistication and appeal. Similar naming conventions have been used for other products, like "Belgian waffles," which also have variations specific to different regions.
Despite the name, these buns are not a traditional pastry in Belgium but are not commonly found in Belgian bakeries.
Belgian buns have become a beloved treat in the UK. They are often found in bakeries, supermarkets, and cafes, and they are enjoyed with tea or coffee.
The recipe can be adapted with different fillings and flavours, making them a versatile pastry.
In summary, Belgian buns are a delightful pastry with a mysterious and commercially appealing name, likely created and popularized in the UK.

Taking Cooking food back to basics.
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 500g (3 1/2 cups) All purpose / plain flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 50g (1/4 cup) caster sugar
- 10g (1 1/2 teaspoons) instant yeast
- 50g (1/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened
- 300ml (1 1/4 cups) whole milk, warmed
- 1 large egg
For the Filling:
- 100g (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened
- 50g (1/2 cup) light brown sugar
- 1 - 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon - I used mixed spice (below)
- 150g (1 cup) currants or raisins
- 200g Lemon curd
- 1 tablespoon milk (for brushing)
For the Filling:
- 100g currants or raisins
- 50g softened butter
- 50g light brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 200g lemon curd
For the Icing:
- 200g icing sugar
- 2-3 tbsp water
- Glacé cherries for topping
Mixed spice
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp Nutmeg
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp coriander
I used a 10 x 10-inch tray. I prefer these days to Individual buns.
Oven 175°C (350°F) for about 20-25 minutes
Airfryer 160°C (320°F) for about 20-25 minutes

I've got my late mother's Kenwood Chef from the 1970s, still going strong, but I've also seen them going cheaply in charity shops (thrift stores). Keep your eyes open for a bargain.

Home made Lemon Curd is the best, can also make Orange curd if the fancy takes you (replace the 3 lemons with 2 Oranges), beware of wax coated fruits in the West. Lemon Curd run through home made Yogurt, topped with a small amount of honey. Some great recipes in this channel loved the Corned Beef Hash it is a great recipe a real change from the old mashed to destruction version, was a nice texture change. Belgian Buns yum yum.

I made these yesterday. A previous recipe I used was for strong white bread flour only and Rik is so right, the dough using half and half was so much softer. I only wanted to make 4 - 6 buns, so divided the recipe by 3, the dough was extremely sloppy, but I realised afterwards, I used a whole egg rather than a third of one. Ooops, never mind, a bit more flour soon sorted that out, my partner LOVED them

In 1960 when I left school,I went to work in a big bakery in Birmingham that supplied their 14 shops,and we made these buns,main difference was no lemon curd,and the top was glazed with apricot jam,instead of simple syrup,5 years later when I arrived in the States ,I found the Belgian bun had under gone a name change,and now it was a Danish.Though Danish does cover several different buns,including a flatter type,with,lemon curd,raspberry,or a sweet cream cheese in the middle,but some of the Danish are just about the same as the Belgian bun.😊

Hi Rik just to let you know iv just made these and they have turned out beautifully thank you it’s down to your calm and no no nonsense manner that I got it right as my dough was soooo sticky when I got it out of the mixer but I just kept watching you and hearing you say in my head don’t panic nice and steady and it came together , I’m not saying they are perfect , different sizes etc but they look good and can’t wait to eat one with hubby later 👌Amanda xx

A work of art, love fruit buns. I am hoping to purchase the Hysapientia 24L oven before the end of the year. I have Ninja air fryers which are great but they dont brown the bread on the bottom therefore you have to turn them over to finish cooking. Your recipes all look so delicious, good home cooking.

Nice buns Rik! Had a penchant for Puttanesca for quite a while now but normally on a pizza from my local takeaway with anchovies, tuna, green and brown olives, onions and thinly sliced green and red chillies. Have just watched a few videos on here for "Spaghetti Puttanesca" which looks superb. Saw one Italian chef add salami to his and I suppose if you've got the base of anchovies, garlic, olives, capers and tomatoes you could add anything you wanted although the "Purists" of the dish may not agree! Be great to see you cook your inimitable version of that on your channel if you ever get short of ideas. All the best, and keep up your great work!

I don't mind sweet rolls/buns. Don't like the icing at all, though. I have a KitchenAid stand mixer and have never used it. I'm 68 and my wrists ache something awful after chopping a lot of vege, so maybe it is time for me to use the mixer. And the food processor and my "barrel" grater.
