Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenweapons.com
One of the rarest versions of the FN49 rifle is the Belgian Congo contract, made to equip the Force Publique there - the military force in the territory when it was a Belgian colony. A total of 2,795 of them were delivered (all actually AFN-49s, chambered for .30-06); 1,500 rifles in 1951, 1,100 more in 1952, and 185 scoped sniper models in 1954. Some of the standard rifles (including this particular one) were later scoped, though. They replaced Mauser Model 1930 bolt action rifles, but only for a few years - Belgian adopted the FAL in 1954.
When Congo gained its independence in 1960, the arms of the Force Publique ended up in the hands of fighters on both sides of the Congolese civil war. They remain very scarce in western collections today because they were dispersed across central Africa in the wake of the civil war and have never been commercially exported. Interestingly, this is the only place historically where two opposing forces both used the FN49 in combat; the UN mission to Katanga included a contingent of Indonesian troops armed with their own FN49s.
Many thanks to the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History in Brussels for access to this very rare piece! Check them out here:

Friend at the range in Ostend launched his SAFN49 in 30.06 just last week. Iron sights, big bangs. Pretty nice grouping. Most who did their military service with the Belgian Navy enjoyed this masculine battle rifle - and also at the officer’s training at Arlon. 1 big minus in the Congo: wooden stock in a tropical climate, bad combo. I wonder how few are still serviceable 60 years later.

I weirdly just saw a FN49 for the first time just yesterday on a tv show. It was a show called The Weapon Hunter which I highly recommend watching. There are episodes such as building a Vietnam Gun Truck. Finding the best WWII sniper rifle. And the last episode was recreating the Stinger LMG Frankengun used on Iwo Jima. Awesome show but sadly there are only two seasons with six episodes each. So 12 episodes total. I watched them all on Hulu.

I wanted one for a long time and finally ended up with an Argentine Navy model converted to 7.62 x 51 with a 20 round box magazine actually detachable. Action is like a SKS but better made. I managed 2 magazines and I can't help but believe FAL magazines were made from this. From what I heard early imported mags were cut to 10 probably ruining them. They are much heavier made than FAL mags and have two box structures on the back where FAL mags just have rolled corners. My rifle shoots very reliably even with poor quality Indian 308 surplus. Didn't know until later or I never would have used it. Blueing is lightly worn and stock is mostly just oil saturated in places. Came with a nice bayonet too. In contrast my Century FAL had to have the gas adjusted for it to function.

I know you're a firearms expert/historian but do they generally only give access to people with certain educational degrees (not just some gun historian researching for a book they're writing, etc)? What about nationality/passport? Not ALL countries are too 'open' to giving access to foreigners (even to museum collections, research areas) depending on the foreigners nationality. I see you traveling to Czech Republic, Belgium, Finland/Sweden, Germany; but have you had trouble traveling to other places or getting arrangements/permission to view collections based on the nations attitude towards USA or your credentials?
