I remember watching this game live back in 2018 .. Not a dull moment in the second half .. no time wasting .. no passive defensive tactics .. 49 minutes of joy and excitement .. Amazing performance by Japan .. But the winning goal was a masterpiece .. a lesson in counter attack and team play .. Some people blame Japan for being overconfident and letting their guard down .. I'd rather give credit to Belgium for the third goal .. I don't think it's easy to score a goal like this if it was another team .. That was fantastic ..

Belgium had world class players and experience. Japan had discipline and patience. A game of true sorts. Two opponents respected each other. Belgium won the match as expected. Japan won our hearts!! Games like these what makes Football so exciting

One thing that is extremely underrated about this game is how Japan never backpedaled, never stepped back, never was afraid of an immensely superior Belgium team. A lot of teams would have just parked the bus in front of their goal after stumbling into a 2-0 lead, but they kept attacking, giving their fans a show. Really admirable.

aaaand I'm back here three years after the game. I cried so much after the game, but definitely the most memorable WC game of my life. Congrats to Belgium, but equally great job to Japan.

It was the biggest overcome of the 2018 World Cup.The winning goal was scored in the final minutes.The winning goal play started with the goalkeeper.Lukaku made a brilliant move and left the ball for another player to score.

I became a fan of the Japanese team from this match, going in not picking a side. I tend to root for the underdogs when neither is my team or country, and was so happy when they were up 2-0. This game was heartbreaking and I can’t imagine how it felt to the actual Japanese fans that day.

After watching this for maybe the 10th time, Honda's knuckle free kcik was a thing of beauty that no one talks about. Perhaps could've been higher but great read and save by Courtois.

Lukaku's movement on the last goal was amazing. His first diagonal run opened up all the space for Meunier on the right wing. Then, once Meunier has it, Lukaku shows back to the ball opening up the space at the back post for Chadli, and to top it all off, he even dummies the ball through for him. This was my favorite game of the 2018 World Cup and I think the 2018 World Cup was the best World Cup I've had the pleasure of watching (out of 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018... I watched in 1994 and 1998 but I was too young to understand everything and since I'm American I didn't have anyone to explain the sport to me). In addition to Chadl'is amazing goal, Japan's second goal was truly exceptional, too. What a crazy shot, it was such a pure strike that the ball didn't rotate a single time on the way in.

As a 90's kid growing up watching many Japanese animated series/movies, and being Captain Tsubasa one of my favorites, Japan always has had a special place in my heart. What a fantastic match the Japanese played!

My words won't be able to express how fond I am of Lukaku. He missed 2-3 of his signature plays throughout the game, which, if had gotten in, would have been decisive. But in the very end, when the ball was passed to him, and he would have bee able to score, he selflessly let it pass to his colleague. What a player.

What a game this was! I wanted Belgium to win this world cup even though i am a hardcore Brazil fan...I was rooting for Belgium even before start of the world cup as this is the best ever talented team of Belgium comprising of Premier League superstars...I was watching this game with my father and when Japan was leading 2-0 i told him that Belgium has the capacity to make a comeback...but this sort of comeback was like a going to heaven feeling...fought hard throughout and very unfortunate to lose against France in the semis...but still attained the 3rd place in the world cup beating England...hope this team returns strong in 2022 world cup.

this game breaks my heart every time i watch it. well played by Japan. I can't imagine what the players must have been feeling when that final whistle blew. Every goal scored was quality (though i don't think even Vertonghen knows how he scored that first one lol), but Japan's were just some top drawer stuff.

I watch this from time to time. I believe that this match is one of the best and most fair matches ever that were played during a World Cup. It should have been the Finals. Belgium roared when our Red Devils scored that final goal but our hearts bled for the Japanese players, who equally deserved to win. We are fully aware of that fact. After the 0-2 most of thought it was over. Only the maturity and teamwork of the Red Devils assured our victory. Not many teams could come back from a 0-2 but they managed to do just that. Greatest of respect to the Japanese players also. They grabbed us by the throat at the start of the match. They fought like honorable warriors and never relented in their attacks. They kept their game up to the very last. Together, both our teams played one of the most beautiful and fair matches that were ever played during a World Cup. Too bad there had to be a winner.

I’ve watched a shorter version of this match highlights for a couple of times and today watching this extended version brought me more excitement. I’ll never get tired of praising the commentator, on his fabulous poem-like rendering of the game. When Hazard was shooting, the way he called out his name was like a father to his beloved son or a teacher to his best student!
