The Kaani tribe, also known as Kaniyar or Kani, are one of the indigenous communities living in the forests around Agasthyarkoodam. They have a rich cultural heritage and a deep connection with the land. Their beliefs often revolve around nature worship, with Agasthyarkoodam being a sacred site for them.
According to local folklore, Agasthyarkoodam is associated with the sage Agastya, who is revered in Hindu mythology as one of the Saptarishis (seven great sages). The peak is believed to be his abode, and it holds spiritual significance for Hindus.
For the Kaani tribe, Agasthyarkoodam is not just a mountain; it's a living entity, a deity they worship and respect. They have their own set of beliefs, rituals, and customs associated with the mountain, passed down through generations orally.
However, over time, with the encroachment of modernization and restrictions on access to the mountain due to conservation efforts, the traditional beliefs and practices of the Kaani tribe have been challenged. The Kaani people have faced displacement and marginalization, affecting their way of life and cultural practices.
Efforts are being made by various stakeholders, including NGOs and government agencies, to preserve the cultural heritage of indigenous communities like the Kaani tribe and to ensure their rights and well-being are respected while also conserving the natural environment of places like Agasthyarkoodam
