Bell Island was a thriving mining town but when the mines closed in 1965 there was a mass exodus as people moved all over Canada and the USA to find employment. There are many holes where homes used to be and there were many broken hearted Bell Islanders who felt what this singer expresses. The Bell Islanders who remained have struggled to keep the island alive and I visit as often as I can. These pictures are all taken on Bell Island or of Bell Island while waiting in Portugal Cove for the ferry to take me to the island. The town of Bell Island is called Wabana, A part of my heart is buried within the iron ore rocks of Bell Island.
