Coming from a different small outport community in Newfoundland this hits pretty hard. This is an amazing video that really captures the hardships outport communities have faced since the cod moratorium
Seeing your personal involvement in the situation and if you don't mind me asking, what's your personal opinion on the moratorium? As an outsider, I can see that it is a measure to try to restore the ecosystem after the aggressive fishing practices that took place in the region, but it is undeniable that it has also negatively affected the economies of these small communities, so I was wondering how people in the region feel about the cod moratorium.
@@manuelbonet I see the moratorium as a necessary evil. Growing up surrounded by fishing families and coming from one myself I can see that everyone wants to be able to return to the way of life their ancestors practiced for generations. But I also understand that it’s not going to be sustainable if the moratorium is lifted before the populations recover. Cod fishing is a part of life here and while the moratorium certainly took that from the people it’s also one of the few preventative measures that could’ve been put in place to preserve that way of life for the future generations.
If there’s a big lesson here, it’s that the moratorium didn’t come nearly fast enough, and our navy didn’t start turning-away foreign vessels fast enough either. This collapse is devastating and really shows the damage we can do as a species when we mismanage natural resources so badly.
@@alezacrespublik6655 Talking of Mr. Obvious. There's a huge desert of sand in Australia and you'll never guess in a million years the name they gave to it on their maps...... Oh, you're ahead of me on this one? (mind-reading employed here) You're absolutely right. ''The Great Sandy Desert.''
Lots of jokes about HAI and stuff here which is fun. But I have to say, this is such a new height for you guys, the visuals, the sound design, and, wow, the eloquent narrative brilliantly written. Congratulations on your achievement here.
Being part of the statistic that moved away out west, it was difficult watching without tearing up at some points. I know that most Newfoundlanders long for the day that the economic outlook is good enough to move back home, the connection that Island people feel to their home is unbelievably strong. Thank you for this video, Sam. I had to come over and watch it again after seeing it on your main channel, excellent content and I hope to see more.
Sadly myself being a Newfoundlander the accent is slowly dying out, where I'm originally from the accent os still there but in the bigger towns its very faint. The one thing that doesn't change though is the slang and the way we say words, dropping the H or extending the A but that tang in the rest is almost non existent
I'd really like to know more about the two who stayed... how are they going to sustain themselves? Why did they choose to stay as only TWO people? That was the most interesting part of the video for me.
I totally agree with you i am super curious why they stayed there, loyalty to where they were born, old age and not wanting to change their way of life?
@@texasforever7887 Yes. I read they'd worked for years in Ontario and wanted a quiet, peaceful retirement in a scenic place. They were going for exactly what everyone there were leaving for- but they probably had the money saved up to do it, whereas the ones leaving were looking for opportunities or for closer access to medical services.
I know this'll get swallowed up in a sea of other comments, but I just wanted to say this video moved me deeply and got me thinking about the massive forces in the world and my place in them. Videos like these are a force for good in the world, and I hope you keep making well made and significant content like this.
The accent sounds vaguely Irish to me. I like that. As an American who lives less than 100 km across the lake from Toronto, I'm very familiar with the standard-issue Canadian accent, so the novel zing of a Newfie accent is much appreciated.
@@jimothypersson8306 We hiked on the rocks along the ocean, some 20 metres above. It was breathtaking and very quiet. We also checked out a couple of historic sites and museums.
@@jimothypersson8306 St. John's is a great small city, and there's tons of beautiful hiking up and down the East Coast Trail, as well as two national parks.
The Seduction of Dr Lewis/The Grand Seduction is a beautiful film (and remake) about a community like this facing relocation- definitely worth checking out
I like Simon but I stick to Top 10's. My interest is already worn thin and I have a very high bar for new subscriptions. You have to when you work 40 hours a week, and are married with 2 kids. Do you know of the Dark 5/Dark Docs guy? He just opened his SEVENTH channel recently. He releases I would guess 8-10 videos a week across all the channels. It's a small challenge keeping up.
@@User31129 Simon is prodomimemtly who I watch. Joe Scott, Scott manly, Terra matter, and fact fiend make up the rest of my feed. I consider all of them to be high quality. Also I would add business blaze by Simon to replace top tenz. It is so much more entertaining, he actually has a personality on that channel.
There are actually a huge number of small settlements that have been abandoned on islands like that in Newfoundland. My grandfather was born on one of these in 1920s, eventually the island was abandoned and they moved to the Gander area of Newfoundland. When I was little we could take a skidoo on the sea ice all the way to the old settlement, it's been about 5-6 years since that was possible thanks to lack of ice.... Thank you for highlighting this topic, I'm looking forward to more great vids on this channel!
Really excited to see Extremeties in video form! As cool as the podcast content was, I am a visual person and I much prefer being able to watch things while I'm listening to them. :D
I don't know how I could have missed it, but did he talk about the two people who stayed behind? Toward the end, he mentioned that they were the Parsons. But that's all I caught about them.
This really tugged at the heartstrings. I'm in the opposite side of the world, but I felt all the poignancy of the end of this little island's history. Great video, Sam. Loved the Extremities podcasts; this is even better.
Hey Sam! Not sure if you're looking for recommendations, but if you are, I would recommend talking about Santa Cruz del Islote, In Colombia. It might qualify as an interesting location for this channel!
Pretty sad, that for 300-400 years, these local Out Port Fishing communities used low environmental impact fishing, sustainable, communities thrived. Then in 10 years it was destroyed by greed, factory ships dredging the sea floor until it was barren.
Hey, Newfoundlander here. Amazing video. I have family in another outport island and it scares me that the place I visit every summer will go. Much love.
I live in newfoundland gander currently on change islands and I visited little bay islands 1 week ago I got there from my pops speedboat its a beautiful place!
It's interesting how, instead of focusing on insanely remote places, like the podcast did, the new Extremities is about places that are right around the corner from the rest of civilization. It feels crazy thinking about how places that seem tethered can be so isolated and lose everything so quickly.
Crazy to think that some towns were simply born to serve an economic or otherwise temporarily-essential purpose and eventually had their sun set on them forever. Eerie stuff. Beautiful video, I am super excited for more of Extremities!
I’m glad you’re back! Are you going to start making Extremities podcast episodes again? I really enjoyed them pre-pandemic. I don’t normally comment on RU-vid videos, but I really like your work, brother!
This video is double letterboxed for me on an iPhone 12. I’d love to see it uploaded at its native aspect ratio instead of 16x9 with baked in black bars.
Thank you Sam. I’m a Newfoundlander and I just want to appreciate you for how great the video was. (Also thanks for pronouncing the name right, even if it took a bit.)
Very similar to Ramea, Newfoundland its a very small ocean village and relied on cod fish and when the market died it too became very close to gone but luckily has continued with ferry service and a future hope. Great video !
I really liked your podcast, and I'm glad to see this format come out. Please let nebula know that they really need a roku channel. I did subscribe, but I won't renew if I can't watch on Roku.
As a german growing up in a rural but wel connected town this was so amazing to watch. Germany is quite densely populated and heavily urbanized so this remoteness and self sustaining character is new to me. Nevertheless I feel like there is something beautiful about it and kind of something right. I am endlessly glad for all technological and societal progress we have but living in a small close knit community your whole life, knowing the land you lived will be the land you die has something calming about it. Something ancestral
Is there a reason the video has black bars on the top and bottom of the video? It looks like the video was accidentally rendered in 16:9 when the video isn't 16:9 so when you go to make full screen on an ultrawide monitor there is a huge black border around the whole video
You make some of my favorite content on RU-vid mate Love the new channel. Living on the east coast of Canada this story hits home. Thank you for telling it!
Thank you for making this video. I just saw an ad for a cabin on little bay island. Makes me sad, I want to move to my fathers island resettled sixty years ago.
I don’t understand how the algorithm creates a gap in between one episode and the next. This is my first time watching this channel but oddly it seems like it’s actually your first video
This video is excellent! Amazing story telling, very informative about something I had idea about, and a strong message at the end. I enjoy the more serious tone compared to your other channels - I'm excited to follow this on Nebula!
Quality content. And a I got very interested what is the state for the Atlantic cod population, mabey that vendover bricks guy can do a episode of cod logistics and population.
If you are going to upload the video in ultrawide, please actually upload it in ultrawide, and not 16:9 with black bars, because now on my ultrawide monitor i have double black bars :(. (other than that, great video)
Hey Sam, good job on this!! Even if a few details were a bit off, you clearly put in a lot of effort to understand a complicated topic, and I appreciate you.
is the podcast-format dead or will you resume doing podcast (and extremities videos) when its safe again? I really enjoyed the podcasts and it would be very sad if there wouldnt be any more. nontheless, your skill in triggering emotions with the calm video and great music is excellent! certainly the best I know here on youtube.
