Yeah, I’ve heard the E-bell tone. When it isn’t echoey, it sounds much less like a bell to me. Here’s the story: I heard it at a hotel in Vancouver BC (Westin Bay Shore I believe) where they had a false evacuation when the fire alarm sounded at 5:50 in the morning, waking us up. This was early 2023 if I recall correctly. The alarm wasn’t even very loud in our room, because the notification appliances (old Simplex LifeAlarms, but on a newer EST panel) were only in the hallways. Even in the hallways, it wasn’t ear-piercing. Based on the amount of people outside the building, most people slept right through the alarm!!! It was a similar E-bell tone, but continuous and no automated message. This was in the taller skinny tower section of the hotel. I did hear an EST integrity horn doing temporal 3 in the distance while outside, so I wonder if the shorter, wider part of the building had really loud horns. There were certainly a lot more people in the halls going to their rooms afterwards on that side…

Most larger buildings want us to test the bells and relays after hours, since those portions have a large impact on the tenants. This one took a very long time; I was there for about 32 hours of nights.

Up until the 2000s, Canada primarily used bells for audible signaling. I think they use bell tones because people are used to the sound.

The other areas of the building. I have to do some censoring and stuff so that might be a while.

I fully agree. I don't mind inspecting EST3s if they're programmed correctly, but if you open the loop or anything, you're fucked. I was doing an annual on a 3 at a nursing home last week. Tested an isolator, and right on cue, a map fault comes in.
