Belle casting bad, Ariel casting good. (& why that's ironic)

It's a bit peculiar how the strongest casting decision in the history of Disney live-action adaptations was met with so much controversy, while one of the weakest was accepted so easily. Hmmm....

Agreed. The 2023 adaptation has a fair share of problems and drags on for way too long, but Bailey does an excellent job as a vocalist and showed plenty of enthusiasm when acting too. She was probably the best part of an otherwise middle-of-the-road movie. Definitely better than Javier Bardem phoning it in as Triton. This is the best-case scenario imo. People recognize her individual talent but they also are starting to realize that the Disney live-action remakes aren't creative. Hopefully, this bolsters her career while slowing down the production of beat-for-beat remakes that don't provide enough reasons to exist when the animated version still holds up well.

and even more irony, I even think that her skin color is not so dark in the water; I think that people wouldn't see as much change if they wouldn't have known that Halle Bailey is black; Disney should have released a recording of her singing before releasing their casting choice and should have asked modestly whether the audience would accept this Ariel. I mean...they dyed also her hair properly for the movie, but honestly, doing such "colorblind" casting with one of the most popular Disney characters of all time was out of nowhere ....they should have been aware that it would cause trouble with many fans....the animated version of Ariel is simply too popular - they could (almost) literally everything with not so beloved Disney characters, but this was like something they should have tackled with more carefulness, even if I agree with the casting...

Well, and this was mostly what got me to learn more about Halle Bailey and so was fully convinced when I saw her as Ariel finally. Although I‘m not generally a fan of „cheap race swapping“, I still wonder why there hadn’t been a similar trouble with the race swapping in „The Nutcracker and the four realms“. I assume a major problem in the general heated mood with such projects, such like Velma and later Nefflix Cleopatra; people so afraid of „wokeness“ that they get paranoid with everything else…I have also felt problematic such videos like „Disney characters singing in national languages“ and Ariel referred as Danish, and now they claim it’s like „Disney is destroying white Danish culture representation“…; the live action movie is honoring much more Andersen than the animated version…yet, Ariel is simply too iconic, but I‘m also baffled how everyone is only concerned with her average looks, not her personality (just to mention how many also called Chelsea from Ruby Teenage Kraken a better Ariel than Halle Bailey…🙈)

It's so strange that they keep on insisting that people are racist because of the actress being black and they hate the movie because of the color of her skin lol. They didn't even realizing forcefully race swapping something already existed in the first place is racist. The animated version was a white skinned red head and they say it's still the same Ariel when it's obviously it's not. It's not about the color of her skin nor her race, but the force race swapping. Yes it's force race swapping and that is racist. If they want a person of color as a new mermaid then make another original movie, but why they had to force race swapping Ariel when she's already white in both the cartoon movies and TV series. Do you think the fans of the original would just be happy about that. No they won't. If the film was openly accepted by everyone how come the box office didn't reflect that. They say the people are just racist especially in Asia that's why, then how come spiderman into the spider verse sequel is a big hit in international and especially in Asia theaters, not to mention the lead is a person of color too. The reason why the spiderman movie succeeded while the force race swapped little mermaid is not, it's because of "faithful adaptation" to it's source material (spiderman =comics, little mermaid= little mermaid cartoon movie). In the comics that version of spiderman is a black kid and they faithfully adopted the character into the cartoon movie, not to mention a live action version will come out soon as well and a black actor will still lead on that movie. That's why spiderman into the spider verse sequel is successful and the force race swap little mermaid didn't. Faithful adoption equals loyal and faithful fans, not force race swapping and says that's the same character, when it's obviously it's not.

This is the only Disney live action that I went to see twice in theaters. Was it perfect? No. Was I thoroughly entertained? Yes. Even being a lover of the animated classic I couldn't help but be mesmerized by the story all over again - as if I didn't know where it was heading. Especially once on land where Halle was able to do her own thing with new material. That's where she really shined - in the added scenes between her and Eric, and the human world. Her voice was amazing - but I fell in love with her curiosity, the way her eyes spoke between her silences. The way she was so determined to learn it all. That's the performance people - she was able to say so much without ever speaking in the later half of the film. With Emma, music aside, it never felt as if she was actually in her world. I didn't believe her wonder of the enchanted castle - or how she had fallen for the Beast. It felt disconnected to the point that I was always aware that I was watching Emma Watson in costume. With Halle, she became Ariel - maybe not the same Ariel which by and by I never wanted but her own. I daresay I would have loved her the same even if this hadn't been a Disney remake. If this cast had been given these roles in a simple adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson film than I would have loved it. Her performance was the film.

@@chanelchandra6889 I don't like the live action, but especially for this song need to be considered carefully because I've watch lots of part of your world analysis and that's a thing that i can say that Disney really care about the movie and put their effort on it. This is also the best "I Want" song in the entire Disney universe. It's one of the most major changes that made this film not so bad (although i still hate this movie). Well both version actually work with their own way. Howard Ashman specifically asked for "Part of Your World" to be sung like a monologue, it's not meant for anyone else outside of the grotto to hear what Ariel was singing, the scene should be more intimate with a youthful wonder, more gentleness and love for the world on land, since the focus of the song is something she loves. In the original version, when Ariel sighs and the song ends slowly and gently with the last few verses, I can really feel the emotion there which is the things Ariel tells us what she wants to do in the song are just wishful thinking at this point. Also an important part of maintaining that type of reserved passion is also that the original song does not change key. In the worlds of pop music and musical theater finishing off with a key change is a helpful tool for bringing songs to a heightened emotional level and when covering Part of Your World, some people have done exactly that but I don't really think that a key change is necessary because that wasn't the intent of the songwriters. Howard said that intensity is better than enormous in this song. In fact I think that's staying in the same key the whole time is what makes it work so well having it push and pull and eventually bring Ariel back down to where she started tells a story effectively it even ends with the same motif it began with showing the audience the life that she wants but then going back to the life that she has. As you can see in the first (look at this stuff) and last (part of that world) sentence the song doesn't change the key at all which really shows that the song is just a small wish from the bottom of her heart and then she realizes that it is impossible to achieve so she returns to the world/reality where she lives. So yeah the live action one is more like a current pop music imo because they change the key, making the highs feels higher and as a result the lows feel lower. But it still works as "I Want" song. From this you can know that Howard Ashman was a great lyricist that he can even tell a story from a song. He also made the song dynamically switching from singing to talking and vice versa but the transition between them is still unnoticeable. But in the remake, Halle looks like she is always singing. Well because im bad at explaining so here's the full explanation. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f004vevFZYQ.html The live action is more cheerful and hopeful and also the orchestration supports that adding a new wonderful intensity to the song. I don't think the remake version capture the emotions of the original but yeah everything doesnt need to be the same since this is live action remake so I hope that there's some improvisations too. In the animated version, Ariel wishes to be part of the human world, she felt sad that the ocean was trapping her in a way that no one else seemed to understand, but in the remake version, they made Ariel sound like she hate the fact that the ocean is trapping her (that's showed by she emphasized the words 'stand' and 'above'), feeling sad about something isn't the same as feeling hate towards something. The reprise in the remake should sound hopeful, but here it just feels like repeating the same kind of singing of the first part, which adds no new emotion to the song. One thing that's interesting in the live action is it actually has a lots of imperfection, because that's how this song should be sing. Even though Halle sounded strained in the first few lines, she did manage to make the ending sound natural so she wraps it up pretty nicely. So which is the best? We all know that the original Part of Your World will always win not just because the nostalgia vibe but also Jodi Benson (original Ariel's voice actress) is really well and carefully directed by Howard Ashman, the legendary lyricist who made Disney rise from its downfall and started the renaissance era of Disney, who recently returned from his huge career in musical broadway theater world that time, that even her breaths, stress and pause on each syllable are really well and gently cared for. But if we judging them with Howard's standards, I dont think that this is fair. So if we see this as "I Want" song, the original is more gentle and intimately that showings desperate hope while the live action one is more cheerful and hopeful. It depends on your perspective to determine it. The original is about a little hope, wish and dream from your heart that you want to say but you dont want everyone to know about while the live action shows your hope, wish and dream that you want to shout to everyone to let the world know. Well Im not good at explaining so here's the full explanation. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9glDYFL5VkM.html Some people say that Jodi sings the song as a character and Haile sings the song like she is in front of America's Got Talent's juries. Well i can agree with that. Actually, directors (I mean Ashman) do direct them in a certain way. When Jodi Benson was recording, the director specifically told her that she had to sing like she was saying something intimate instead of belting it like she was in front of thousands of people, that's why all her big notes don't actually sound big and powerful but sweet and dramatic. While I believe in Halle's version they did quite the opposite. Im not judging her style because I mostly prefer someone who bring the og song with their own style instead of trying to imitate the og, like what Will Smith does as a genie in Aladdin. I think he should bring the songs and the character by himself instead of struggling to imitate Robin William because Robin's personality is so unique and no one can does the same performance as a genie the same as he did. But Idk man maybe because as a disney nerd/historian, Im too in love with all of Howard's legacy. If you ask me which is better between Jodi or Halle then I mostly prefer the demo version sung by Howard himself. Also you can see that Ariel in the live action version is a sligthly less interacting with the environment around it. But the most sadly that the live action lost the cute interaction between Ariel and Flounder, like Ariel clutching its fins and dancing together, which shows that Ariel has more personality (well because you know Flounder here looks very hyper-realistic in live action, almost like a normal thropical fish so i dont think it will works). But I'm still grateful because they removed some of the scenes that disturbed this intimate moment, such as the part where Sebastian screams and winks. And I really hate the fact that the live action one make the surroundings become darker just to attempt to be more realistic. The consequence is that we are not shown how many and unique objects in Ariel's cave which is a quite important part in showing how interested she is in the human world. Now they are all covered by the darkness. The interactions make it more dynamics and shows her more personality even though this is her "I Want" song but no one's gonna watching her doing nothing except singing right? Also the song is supposedly to be dynamically switching from singing to talking and vice versa but the transition between them is still unnoticeable like what Howard said. But in the remake, Halle looks like she is always singing (except for the first line). I think that's a big potential wasted here. But the really butchered songs are Poor Unfortunate Soul and Kiss the Girl. The lyrics changes is unnecessary and completely ruined the meaning of the song. Under the sea is just out of context because Ariel is not supposed to sung along at that part. You know it's just shows that they dont even care about the story and just want to show off Halle's voice. I dont know what they want to fix from the original even though they just kept ruined Ashman’s legacy. The additional songs are okay, except for Scuttlebutt, it is just a trash. It should not be exist anymore. I mostly prefer Le Poisson than this garbage. I know both songs are supposed to be a jokes but Le poisson is happy and fun meanwhile scuttlebut is cringe. In the original, scuttle doesnt need to sings a literall song and waste our 2 minutes just to conveyed Ariel that Eric is getting married. Scuttle was not character that is designed to be able to sing in the first place (you can see it from kiss the girl scene when its voice literally ruined the mood) yet in this live action they literally gived it a song?! Idk why they still added new song for Eric even though they keep tried to kill his character in every chances

Not true. The reason this movie was bad is unrelated to Hallie and her skin color. Its because its just not original and a slimy cash grab from Disney. The reason why Cinerella worked was because, they expanded on the plot such as Ella's backstory and her relationship with Kit. None of the other remakes, even with white/fair skinned characters worked (Eg: Mulan and Beauty and the Beast), because it was just a 1:1 remake with the original story and lazy. To add to all of that, the remakes devalue and downplay the message the originals were trying to make (Eg: Turning pleasure island from crime ridden to Disneyland). In this movie, one of the main reasons its bad is because Ariel kills Ursula instead of Eric despite never having any experience driving a ship. Another big reason is that Ariel is made to be a "Mary Sue" by swimming to the surface without the help of Flounder and Sebastian, and Eric is made to be pathetic and made fun of at every turn. I do not blame the actors for this. They were chosen on tallent and demonstrated it. In fact, there is the bigger picture The reason why Del Toro's Pinocchio worked, was not because of skin color or animation, but because it was an original take on the fairy tale. We can see Geppetto's backstory and how he had a grandchild (Carlos), who died to bombing. Original movies work, because they are original and do not feel cheap at all. They add soul and give a heartwarming plot. When Hollywood and Disney wonders why their movies flop, instead of blaming their audience and pulling the race card, they should see what their audience want

Its so unfortunate how negative the world was to Halle Bailey as Ariel, she has a voice that is unmatched. Ariel's main plot point was that she had a beautiful siren voce, and i strongly believe Halle did her justice. She is so talented and beautiful, both in her looks and personality, shes very humble but the world saw her littler than what she was just because she "didnt look like Ariel". She deserves an apology, I'm happy that she's proud of herself for the role and I hope the world can recognize her as more than just the "Black Ariel". Bless her. ❤

Rob Marshall, the films’ director, agrees with you. Apparently he heard Halle singing at the Grammys, invited her to audition He has an excellent ear if you ask me, because her voice definitely gives mermaid, specifically Ariel 1989 Her voice was the main reason I watched the film because I typically don’t like remakes! 😭
@nut4ku
@nut4ku Год назад
@@alkahinat4558 maybe Rob Marshall choose her because she's good at belting and high note but that wasn’t the intent of the songwriters. Halle really make a new version for herself. She made a key change so it more sounds like a pop song. But Ashman specifically told Jodi that she had to sing like she was saying something intimate instead of belting it like she was in front of thousands of people, that's why all her big notes don't actually sound big and powerful but sweet and dramatic. While in Halle's version they did quite the opposite. Well everything doesn’t need to be the same since this is live action remake so I hope that there's some improvisations too. But yeah both still works as "I Want" song actually (if we don't judge them by Howard's standards). I know they tried to find the best singer, but choosing actress regardless of her appearance, just by her voice is actually kinda forced. The director literally said Halle was the first to audition and was hired almost immediately. Probably there was no “we searched far and wide for the perfect Ariel”, they barely searched at all. Halle even claimed the roles for hers. Rumour has it that Beyoncé got her the role, there are better singers out there, Jackie Evancho and Lucy Thomas would make better Ariel. Lindsay Lohan in her ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘Freaky Friday’ era would have made a great Ariel. She’s an actual ginger, and she used to sing too back then. Initially a big contender like Emma Stone who not only has a natural red hair but is also an excellent singer as she proved in La La Land. She’s also proven herself in Hollywood with her diverse project and even bagged an Oscar. So her playing in a big disney movie would have brought in a lot of revenue. Another big contender is like Chloe Grace Moretz who you might know from Carrie and she appeared to genuinely have been cast in early stages of the project, which just means she really would have been the perfect Little Mermaid. Karen Gillen, she’s the most known by Amy in Doctor Who and Guardian of the Galaxy but just because she’s busy with Marvel doesn’t mean she couldn’t have made room for big movie which would have expanded her portfolio quite a lot. Karen is also probably the most fan casted actress for ginger characters. So this could have been a dream come true for many as for her singing talents, Karen had her big moment on the ABC show “Selfie” where she sang Chandelier and shocked everyone with her angelic voice. No need to go far though, Ariana Grande (idk if Ariana is a bad choice, you can complain about this) imo is already fulfilled standard in terms of looks, acting and most importantly her voice. Even though looking for an actress for live action Mulan was much more difficult because you have to find 18-20 years old Chinese descent who is good at acting and must be able to speak fluent English and Mandarin Chinese but in the end she was found. Director must be blind or something because there’s no way Halle looks remotely like Ariel. It looks like Rob Marshall was lied. Idk but maybe they didn't just see her potential at singing but also at baiting people upset because her skin is black. They just used Halle for marketing gimmick so that the world will be excited and they can cry racism to protect themselves from critics and blame it if their movie flop. You just saw that after this live action was released, Halle was criticized by many people but Disney didn't give protection to her, just let her face it alone, which is so unforgivable. Also the original story from the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen named The Little Mermaid, where she is described as a 15 years old teenager, blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin because this story is originally from Denmark and the background is also in Denmark. Although in the little mermaid (1989) the background setting isn’t specifically told, however in the live action they made a story change by changing the background to Caribbean to make it look more sense why her skin tone became darker. But it’s a very lazy reason for try to hide the woke agenda. Also yeah Disney could have held auditions with appearance standards but they didn't maybe because they wanted diversity too hard. I don't know who is the judge of the audition was but if it was Rob Marshall alone then I wouldn't believe what he said. You know the director itself, Rob Marshall, has a history of directing musicals that almost nobody likes. I just wish there was a better director directed this film like Byron Howard or John Musker and Ron Clenments etc. Halle is good actually. But i don't think Ariel is a good choice because the consequences of blackwashing main character is bad. I want her career grow too but not by being employed by those capitalist in suits. Halle is very princess like and has such a beautiful voice she deserved to be in an original movie not a lackluster remake that will probably be forgotten in 10 years. Idk why the directors and all the other fans keep saying the voice as the reason. That is useless if this movie goes worldwide. Many countries dubbed this movie in theaters so they can't hear Halle's voice. Maybe that's the reason why this movie flops in overseas box office Well after all, we live in modern era. Anything can be done, the same as the voice problem. It's the same case as Emma Watson. Why Disney doesn’t hire a singer to dubbing an actor/actress who cant sing? This used to be incredibly common and could be easily done. The autotune is brutal.

Yeah disney is smart this time because they intentionally chose a character whose her story doesn't affected by her race, etchnicity, or skin color. But what about Tinkerbell, fairy in pinnochio and Snow White? For tinkerbell and pinnochio, there was no particular reason why they should choose actresses of a different race since neither singing nor dancing skills were required. Also, to be frank, Emma's weakness in that movie wasn't entirely her fault; the script was pretty weak, the directing was kind of flat, and the choice to heavily pitch correct the entire cast was a mistake across the board. I think BatB would be aging better despite all its flaws, though, if they'd had someone with Halle's charisma as Belle. I've always watched the little mermaid when I was young, never think anything about race or skin color. If they want to help minorities, why don't they just make a new story with black main characters (i know this is overused but this is the main point!). There are lots of dark skin characters like Kida, Esmeralda, Tiana, Moana etc. If they get whitewashed too are you guys are still okay with that? People don’t hate black people for no reason. Spider verse is a huge success even with black main character because Miles Morales is an original character, not a swap race version from Peter Parker so people would totally okay with that. I dont want to be racist but if they really make a live action adaptation, why the main character is made differently? This isn't about interpretation but the character. It's not a matter of whether Ariel is a fictional character or not. What sticks in people's minds and what they remember about Ariel is red hair, red lips, green fins, blue eyes, white skin, and a beautiful voice. So remember it's not just about voice. If she's fictional character like what you all said then why all the little mermaid film sequences, starting from the original film (1989), TLM 2, Ariel's beginning (prequel), TLM tv series, TLM live, TLM musical broadway, Lilo & Stick, sofia the first, wreck it ralph 2, mouse of house and games like kingdom of heart or even movies that aren't from disney like robot chicken, shrek, family guy, kilala princess (this is japanese manga though) and more (because u know she's really famous) also depicted Ariel with the same appearence? Why not just make her different? From her race, skin color, face shape and everything? Mermaids dont have race right? Yes mermaids can be black but not Ariel! This makes me think that if non-Disney movies pay more respect to Ariel's appearance, why Disney did that? If they made this character black from the first place, surely many people would accept it and wouldn't critizice + probably would be successful too. The original story from the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen named The Little Mermaid, where she is described as a 15 years old teenager, blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin because this story is originally from Denmark and the background is also in Denmark. thank you so much for this video and for mentioning the lack of controversy surrounding jasmine! i always thought it was very hypocritical that halle got so much hate for playing a character whose race/ethnicity is immaterial to her story, but naomi scott is half white/half south asian portraying a west asian/middle eastern princess? like aladdin is so culturally specific, that they literally had to change jasmine's ethnicity in the live action in order for naomi's casting to make sense. but no one said anything. it highkey felt like the general (white) public sees all poc as interchangeable and ethnic/cultural differences don't matter, but the second a white person is changed out for a nonwhite person, it's a massive problem. great video!!
@roshanfey
@roshanfey 4 дня назад
disney's animated aladdin is not specifically west asian either, it was always a blend of arabian and indian. this criticism has existed long before the live action, though i don't think there's any real issue with this kind of setting for a fantasy fairytale, the other princess films are not historically accurate to one specific culture either, and the original fairytale is apparently set in china anyway? naomi scott did receive backlash for being cast as jasmine, and as a desi person i thought it was disgusting to say "she's not ethnic enough" just because she's half white. her mixed heritage doesn't erase the fact that she is indian, looks like jasmine, embodies her character, and plays a role in a film setting partially based on india anyhow.

@@roshanfey thanks for this comment! a few clarifying things: -i loved naomi as jasmine, i just hate the hypocrisy of halle getting so much racist backlash as if disney hasn't racebent before. it seems like people only care when it's white people. -i never took issue with naomi being biracial. though i do remember people doing so and agree that it was wrong. i just wanted to point out that almost no one seemed to take issue with her not being west asian, despite disney's og aladdin clearly being specific to that region, whereas disney's the little mermaid lacks said cultural specificity, but there's a huge problem with halle being black -i disagree that naomi looks like jasmine, but i agree that she did a wonderful job bringing her to life -i agree that cultural accuracy doesn't matter as much in fantasy disney films, as that has never been the point of them. this is my biggest frustration with the hate halle got. i was using naomi's casting as an example of disney not being culturally specific for the sake of the story, but i want to make it clear that i don't think so is wrong. i think halle receiving excessive hate for it is wrong -this is even true with the og little mermaid, it's based on a danish fairytale and yet there's no danish architecture or fashion in the animation, triton is a greek god, and sebastian is a jamaican crab. no one cared. but they care that halle is black. the consistent hypocrisies scream anti-black racism.
@roshanfey
@roshanfey 4 дня назад
@@pinkberry8584 yes, i agree with your points! thank you for clarifying! only other thing i'll say is that while the little mermaid was written by a danish author, the story itself is set in the mediterranean (somewhere between italy and greece) which explains the names and scenery of the film. i really enjoyed how the live action is set in the caribbean instead - it's a fresh take on the fairytale, the culture was colorful and fun to watch, and explains the race-swapped casting! it disproves the anti-halle racists in that, ariel is not the "odd one out" in this version, eric is! i admit i was not initially on board with the race swap casting for ariel when it was announced because i would prefer new original stories for those of us from non-european ethnic cultures, but it's unfair and petty to not give the film a chance just for that. halle never once deserved the hate, backlash, and racism she had to endure. her talent and presence carried the movie and her interpretation of ariel is so enchanting, it's a shame some people are too racist to admit it.

That is so damaging to their psyche Children see themselves in these characters But if they’re constantly being told their image is ‘less than’ others, then don’t see themselves in a good light, like other groups of girls who probably take for granted that they are represented positively, it becomes problematic. It also somewhat atones for Disney past portrayal of a Black girl centaur, goofily attending to the glamorous European centaurs in Fantasia, so I’ll take it

Its nice to hear a voice of reason amongst the covert racists that literally can’t see through Halle’s skin colour and recognise that she makes an amazing Ariel. It’s really disappointing that in 2023 we’re still dealing with this. I wholeheartedly agree with you that if a characters race is not central to the narrative of the story then there should be no clear reason why you shouldn’t cast someone of a different race to play the character as opposed to the original. In the case of the little mermaid, Ariel’s race did not affect the storyline whatsoever. Look what happened when the directors decided to cast Emma Watson as Belle without any auditioning who on paper looked and seemed a lot like Belle but lacked the essence and charisma of Belle. It’s interesting how as soon as any POC (especially black POC) is cast in a live action film there’s a huge uproar from people claiming that they’re not racist. But with a white actress there’s nothing but praise. Go figure. The fact that Ariel's ethnicity is not a defining characteristic (unlike Nani and Lilo, who's ethnicity ties in with the plot and setting) makes the backlash against Halle even more bogus. In fact, the live action's story was seriously enhanced by being set in a Caribbean kingdom, instead of some random white colony. It added depth to Eric's character, gave a reason to why Ariel has darker skin (bc duh she's in the sun all the time), and made the overall vibe so fun and sweet. I really hope the people who complained about the casting actually watch the movie to see how incredible of a fit Halle is.

The little mermaid is clearly written to be white several times in the novel and what Disney did is cultural appropriation. They could have made the prince black actually, the only description of him we get is his BLACK eyes, nothing about skin.

Belle was more than an animated Emma Watson. Emma Watson embodied Hermione Granger who was more cynical than naively wonder-eyed than Belle was. Whereas Halle from her voice to her mannerisms (like the cute part where she mimics a pufferfish) embodies Ariel's playfulness ans curiosity and the only downside to her character is that her hair wasnt a brighter red
@alkahinat4558
@alkahinat4558 Год назад
I would have loved a deeper red on Ariel 2023 Yes, Emma delivered Belle in a Hermione style, that’s the only thing that saved her performance, imo You could see the similarities between the characters and Emma played into that Belle needed to have more vibrancy, expressive eyes, darker hair…she wasn’t captured well enough, but Emma was skilled enough to pull it off, so it just about worked

Emma Watson’s Belle is the worst part of the remake for me and is what ruins the film for me. I have nothing against Emma Watson she seems like a nice person but she didn’t understand what made the original Belle beloved and iconic. I feel like Disney and Bill Condon casted Emma Watson as Belle only because she was in the Harry Potter Film Franchise and both Belle and Hermione are bookworms who like to read. Halle Bailey is the standout in the 2023 remake is she better than the original Ariel? No but she wasn’t trying to be she was doing her own thing while at the same time keeping the heart and essence of Ariel

If you watched the movie you can see she really embodies the curiosity and playfulness of Ariel in addition to an amazing singing voice where she gave me chills during "Part of Your World" something I get from Jodi Benson's version as well. I couldn't imagine someone else taking the role after watching this version. Needless to say, the color of Ariel's hair, skin, and eyes has nothing to do with her character. Furthermore, Halle is slender and petite like animated Ariel, and has a an appearance that is cuter more so than sexy, which Halle also embodies. Now when you start complaining about how her skin, hair color, hair texture, etc. don't exactly match the animated version when the story/character doesn't call for a specific race (given the context, plot, etc.) then it is very clear you have a problem with the actor's specific racial or ethnic group, not the performance (especially when most of the complaints came before the release of the film and subsequently by people who refuse to watch the film now that it is showing).

Each actor EMBODIES their role and elevates the story even more and perfectly adds on to the animated version. They done with The Little Mermaid, what they have failed to do with all the other live actions. Just as The Little Mermaid (animated) saved disney and started the renascence era, The Little Mermaid (live action) is going to save them again in their remake era. Lets just hope that they learn to approach future live actions as they did The Little Mermaid!

I was extremely disappointed in the caption of Aladin. There were so many characters but only a few were actually Arab, Jasmine was half white half Indian. Princess Jasmine was never Indian to begin with! The reason why people didn't care about the casting is because no one cares about Arab people, the media almost erases us, we are only portrayed as Terrorists or oppressed muslim women.

Agree, I was salty about that The lead actress should have been Arabic, without a doubt This is the problem when some demographics don’t have much representation, it matters more to represent them properly I hope humanity moves on from this Eurocentric lens because it’s very stifling, there’s literally room for everyone. I also felt that Jasmine should have been darker skinned, like the cartoon, because girls who look like Jasmine, don’t see themselves in the media enough.

I'll admit, I was oriiginally one of the idiots who was skeptical of this. The original book said the title character had blue eyes and white skin and I tend to get very nitpicky about film adaptations changing what the original author says the charcter looks like. Then I remembered that the animated film changed pretty much the entire story and message period and thought "Hold on, why am I getting upset about this?" Halle is the perfect Ariel. So perfect, I think if Hans Christian Anderson saw the film, he wouldn't even care how much of the source material was changed as he'd be too mesmerized by her performance.

When I did some research, almost all sources say that the og Little Mermaid takes place in Denmark, the same as in the original fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. In the beginning of the live action movie, they quoted lines from the original author, Hans, but it only looks ironic because they are trying to removed the Danish roots of this story. Hans Christian Andersen probably doesn't care if her hair changed into red or locs (fun fact: in the og, they actually want to set her hair blonde but the rest of the crew prefer red head because they never had it before) but Disney's disrespecting his culture by setting a Denmark fairy tale in Caribbean to make it look more sense why her skin tone became darker. But it still considered problematic because they filled the islands with European architecture, clothing, technology and white people, making it looks more like Europe than the Caribbean. And the most controversial thing is that they literally casted an African woman as the queen of the island. Idk why they added this even though he wasn't even in og and she didn't contribute to the story. At this point, I think that the reason why they did this is because they wanted black royalty. But if you look at African royalty in the 18th century, it lacks a certain sense of charm and sophistication when you compare it to the Europeans and they didn't have the balls to put that in The Little Mermaids. Well if they're going to Africanize the story, maybe they should create new Black characters who have unique ethnic backgrounds with African ancestry from all around the world because that is a lot more relatable. Also we talked about Disney's version. They adapted a fairy tale to introduce it to the new generations. Sure they were inspired from it but that's how Disney adapt a fairy tale. Changes the story, mostly the ending and make it more family friendly to fit their audience which is mainly kids. Inspired is not as the same as live action adaptation or remake. "Inspired" means you want to make original story of yours but taking the main idea from another art.

Right. In my personal opinion, Queen Latifah is one of my favorite Ursulas because she's extremely multitalented as she's an amazing rapper, singer, and actress! However, I find it weird that black people are only seen as acceptable in Disney roles if they are playing animals (or people who turn into animals or anything else that is non human), supporting characters, or villains, but when they are in those lead roles people find every little opportunity to complain about it. Black people deserve lead roles as much as they deserve any other type of role in film! Personally, I think Halle is probably the best love action princess by far as she fully embodied everything that Ariel is!

Why cant bipoc actors be casted in roles that have nothing to do with their race? The literal only reason sm characters in media are white is bcuz its seen as the default, not bcuz it at all matters to the plot or characterization. Also why can't we have both new stories with bipoc leads as well as bipoc actors stepping into roles that were previously played by white ppl? And that's not getting into the finish product. Halle had the singing chops already so that as a relief for me. And while the TLM remake wasn't great, she is probably the person who carried the entire movie. She and Lilly James Cinderella are the best live-action remake castings.

Honestly, I do think Halle Bailey deserved better. I had my reservations when I heard they were casting someone who didn't look like the original character and commented on how people seem to always be casting black people as redheads lately. But then I heard about Halle Bailey's wonderful personality. She had actual love and passion for the character she was portraying (unlike Rachel Ziegler with Snow White), and unlike Emma Watson who ruined the Beauty and the Beast film with her attitude, Halle faced all of the backlash with humility and grace. Honestly, Disney did her so dirty. Putting her in such a dull, lifeless film and keeping her in the same outfit for the whole movie rather than giving her a ballgown reveal scene like the others. They could have used some of that CGI to make her hair more vibrant at least, but they didn't even do that. Aside from the acting, it seems like the live action Little Mermaid was very minimal effort and I feel so bad for Halle since that will probably have a negative effect on her future acting opportunities. And it sucks how many people are bullying her online, and over something so trivial. If you were goven the opportunity to play a beloved character in a movie, you would probably take it. She deserves so much better.
