Belle Chasse-Scarsdale Ferry - Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana
The Belle Chasse-Scarsdale Ferry is a ferry across the Mississippi River in the U.S. state of Louisiana, connecting Belle Chasse and Scarsdale and is maintained by Plaquemines Parish. It carries a $1 toll for 2-axle vehicles, $2 for vehicles with at least 3 axles, and $.50 for motorcycles. The eastbank ferry leaves every 15 and 45 minutes on the hour between 5:15 AM and 12:15 AM; the westbank ferry leaves on the top and bottom of every hour between 5 AM and Midnight.
The ferry opened in August 1959 and was originally free.
With the closing of the Pointe à la Hache Ferry in January 2013, the Belle Chasse-Scarsdale Ferry briefly became the furthest downriver vehicle crossing of the Mississippi River. In May 2013, the Pointe à la Hache Ferry was reopened for light traffic, leaving the Belle Chasse-Scarsdale Ferry the furthest downriver crossing for large trucks and buses.

If you look back in our videos, we have a trip across the Chalmette/Lower Algiers ferry in the car, and a few on-foot videos across the Algiers-Canal Street ferry in New Orleans.

I used to ride that ferry just for fun as a kid in the 1970s. The area around it has changed quite a bit. Back then, there was a tomato packing plant and the Belle Chasse Swimming Pool.

I remember the swimming pool (and I don't know why I even know about it, as I never lived in Plaquemines Parish). I wasn't aware that it no longer exists!

That ferry has made 10s of thousands of trips across the river without incident. Probably safer than driving on a street in New Orleans.
