They're going open it back up tomorrow at 11am but slow it down by changing the waxing. www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/detroit-city/2022/08/19/reopened-belle-isle-slide-closes-after-riders-bounce-down/7847577001/
I think the Sam Bernstein law firm was spotted handing out business cards at the bottom of the slide to riders at the completion of their rides. Could just be a rumor though….
Omg!🤣🤣🤣 I don't think I've EVER laughed this hard in my entire life!! And I'm only 2 minutes into the video!! I'd pay good money to watch this in person. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Please leave it up! PLEASE!!!
That is *EXACTLY* the way those slides are supposed to work. I used them ALL through the 80s and 90s. It's also how I got a free wheelchair. Now I am mobile again.
@@Tasmanaut clearly you never been to a chiropractor, My aunt is a chiropractor and she does the great work and she have had extensive medical training
@@Tasmanaut what are you talking about my auntie has a master's degree in biology, from the University of Michigan, did she went to Northwestern School of chiropractice, she has years of medical education in experience, So you need to educate yourself.... These are highly skilled people buddy
The older gal at 10:54 clearly gets 9’s and 10’s from the judges! Gold medal!! Kept it straight, solid and constant speed, basically no impact sound, minimum lift on the humps, excellent and confident dismount at the completion of the run. Nice finishing distance at the end as well. Veteran experience there. Been doing this event since the 70’s no doubt.
We had one of these in Oregon where I grew up. It was the same size and width but had like 8 24" lanes. I'd guess those ribs instead of lanes is why it goes so fast. A friend and myself were in the right place at the right time once. The slide was due to be opened in about a week and the owners wanted the lanes to be waxed. They asked me and my friend if "we could do them a favor" and the handed us a piece of wax paper to put under the bags. Each lane took about 10 trips on wax to make it waxed enough. We spent hours "working" trying to get the slide ready for "paying customers"
@@zacha7469 it used to be at Selmac lake right by the "resort". It was taken out in the mid 80's I think....it was gone before the chicken farm went in. (Pretty sure it was anyway)
@@makeityourself1 oh nice. Little bit before my time so probably why I never heard of it. That's cool though! I love these types of slides especially ones that launch you haha
I’m so glad they brought the giant slide back to Belle Isle. I grew up in the 90s as a kid going there and to the playscape… I really missed those days.

It’s moments like 4:30 and 13:00 for me. God I would have paid so much money to have been there to witness the hour this thing was open. Truly a historic moment for our country lmao.
You need to lean forward so as not to get airborne after the second hump. They should design the sacks to be shorter at the top with some kind of handle that you can hold to tighten the sack against you toes and to make you lean forward.
I’m 32 last time I rode that I was about 10.. my mat came from under me on the 2nd hump and I burned my legs and Elbows coming down the rest.. I have never dreamed of going back on this “ slide “
I rode it n it was fun! I did bounce hard on the last two humps. I felt some pain around my neck holding it up so I don’t slam my head. I posted a video on my YT channel. Slide at your own risk!
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO, IS LEAN FORWARD. IF YOU TRY TO LIE DOWN, YOUR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION CAUSES YOU TO LAUNCH. THEY HAVE TO CLOSE RIDES LIKE THIS BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T LISTEN TO INSTRUCTIONS.
Is this slide constructed with some sort of pillowy metal? The rubber surface at the end is there for friction to stop the slider but friction creates heat too
Curious... what material is that black mat at the bottom ? It can't be rubber right coz people still slide on it? It definitely is not cement either coz people will get bloody scratches on it.
So great on so many levels. I would have loved to have thrown myself down this hill (40 years ago). Head first yet... If they play their cards right this might be a national attraction soon. This story is getting a lot of playtime. They might need to install grandstands for all the viewers who show up to watch this spectacle!
I think you're right. If they didn't slow it down like I heard they plan to, it would get a lot of national attention. Perhaps not good attention though. I heard the MTV Rdiculousness show wanted to use footage taken. People would flock to watch in grandstands. I'm in my 50s with a bad back but may try it this weekend. I definitely would have pre 40.
A lot of things make sense now 🤣 This is way people from Detroit are the way they are -> no adult should get on this slide. I understand the kids 🤦🏽♂️ This is a health hazard, but it seems funny to watch & it is good to see everyone cheering each other on 🤟🏾
This slide wasn’t “a slide and fly”yrs ago ; they had to reconstructed it wit more of a bouncing and flying motion. I think there use to be grass at the bottom? Thanks for this
used to live in Hickory, Hills, Illinois, and there were two slides like this lol. We never went totally airborne, but we used to get burns on our elbows from rubbing against the sides. Then you would form a scab.
It was wild today. Super fast. Lots of air. I think they may have over waxed it. I'm in my my 50s witha bad back.. but want to ride it this weekend if it reopens. 😉
Why is this not in the olympics lmaooo i love how it started to gather a crowed to see which people would make it and which ones wouldnt. No lie id bought a drink n been there all day judging on form and speed!
