There weren't a lot black wealthy men back then. If she were to marry a black man odds are he would've been below her class rank & there by reduce her finances greatly as well as her class rank. The same rules apply if she were to marry white man. Which is why her uncle/papa didn't like that Clergyman that had an genuine interest in her, he was below her class rank. I think in this scene of her aunt & uncle/papa assumed she would never marry due to her skin color.
Which probably why her aunt and uncle papa were relieved when they learned she was to inherit a lot of money from her father when he died. She was set for life and didn't have the same pressure as her cousin Elizabeth to find a husband to take care of her.
It would never reduced her money but her POSITION was more important..they were next to the royal family. Apparently in real life she had many royal, gentry suitors ( ENGLISH) ones she choose the clergyman.
@@houseofzuma1033 are you out of touch, her being illegitimate already burn all that bridge, and she is a mere bastard daughter of an officer ( which himself was son of a baronet) one of the lowest ranking won't even be considered a peer. no she married to a servant, this movie is so fake and make all dido fact the opposite
She should have married Chevalier de st Georges! Both black wealthy with class on the aristocracy alive around the same time. I wonder if she ever heard of his music. I wish they met in another lifetime or reality
the movie is a complete fantasy, in real life her cousin was the rich heiress and married first to Earl of Winchilsea, Dido was broke and married a servant when she was 32 old spinster
