Sunday service band ringing a touch of Cambridge S. Maximus. Bells are 1 to 12 clockwise with the tenor (No.12) in the bottom left and the fifth in the centre.
Well I changed my mind about these bells lthe Sunday before last when I heard them again in the flesh. What a sound, they are just what are needed in the centre of London, a strident, hard sound to shout at the din.
I think the brilliant idea of posting this video, the bells are part of the cultural memory of a place and are symbols of a community's identity, preserve and recover this heritage is to write a history for tomorrow. Get Yours!
Yes. These bells are in the left hand tower as you look at the front of the cathedral. Great Paul and the clock are in the right hand tower. Great Paul is the hour bell and it weighs 16 tons 14 cwt 2 qtrs 19 lbs (37483 lbs) (17017 Kg).
@timmeh1507 the double ding is only noticable when you are right up close. You don't hear it outside. And the bouncy clapper is a good thing (I think) as it allows the bell to hum more freely.
@timmeh1507 Quite decent? I have heard them in the flesh many a time, and love these bells to bits - so characterful!! When I used to go to London for a weekend, we often stayed in a Youth Hostel literally a minute's walk from the Cathedral... it's the old Boy's Choir School!!! Magnificent building, and you can hear the clock very clearly in the rooms... quite magnificent!!
@TheBellsandwhistles yes, it's barely noticeable here. This is the best recording of them I've heard and makes me rather more charitable towards these bells than I was!
@irkibby FINALLY - someone agrees with me that these arent so bad after all!! Thank you!! You may have noticed that hearing a decent recording of Liverpool's cathedral changed my mind somewhat about them, particularly that tenor :)
how many bells are in this tower last time i herd someone said 14 ? abd is it true in some churches if you get married or have a funeral in churchs you can have a bell of remembrance in the tower ?
HI, it's a sort of giant ear-trumpet! It is aimed at the trebles and it sends a bit more of their sound down to the ringers because they are difficult to hear otherwise. TBAW
moncky2000 Yes, the tenors are naturally bigger heavier, stronger and have bigger clappers which hit harder. All of these combine to make tenors much louder than trebles in most rings. Also higher frequency sounds are absorbed more easily so as the sound passes through floors etc on its way to the ringers ears, the treble notes are attenuated more than the tenor's deeper sounds.
