the debate on this scene is so interesting to me bc i think they're both at fault lolol. laurel is angry at belly when she practically emotionally neglected her daughter, knowing full well she should've talked to her to help process both their griefs, but didn't want to. and belly is blaming laurel for giving up on conrad and jeremiah even while knowing she's carelessly played with both of their hearts. clearly logic doesn't run in the family 😭

I agree with this! Laurel should have been more there for belly when she could so clearly tell she was struggling. But belly also should not have played with the boys hearts like that especially considering their situation. I get super mad with Belly for the triangle thing but really what can you expect? They are the only ones who give her attention and affection. Honestly there is no excuse for Laurel, not only in this episode but for the whole season. I GET that she is grieving hard but she is the adult and she is the mother. That means having to suck it up or work on your pain so you can be there for your children. Since 2x01 we’ve seen her grill Belly about her grades, about school etc and Belly told her straight up that she was hurting too & lacking a mother bc Laurel hasn’t been there for her at all. And once again Belly opens up, calls her mom sobbing just to be treated like this? If Laurel who’s the adult is having a hard time processing her feelings, let alone a 16 year old girl.

I know the love triangle plot is chaotic and as a viewer fun to pick a side/team on who she should choose and why but can we talk about Belly’s Blatant lack of every taking accountability for anything that she does especially when things doesn’t go her way, she always comes off as a know it all and always calling people out about their issues but she never looks in the mirror and see the things that she’s done, her mother is the parent but I don’t think it’s fair for her to have expected her mom to know what to do or how to act after losing her best friend like is she not allowed to mourn does she lose that right because he’s the adult? Like be for real, she was on Conrad in both seasons about smoking and school mean while she pretty much let her self get kicked out of Volley ball and fail classes, she tried to use the boy at the party as a distraction and when he basically told her he wasn’t interested she lashed out at the first person that said something she didn’t like ie steven and don’t even get me started on how she handled the whole Jeremiah situation, abandoning him and leaving Conrad to fix the mess that they both made, I see people always coming to her aid online saying oh well she’s just a kid/teenage girl etc etc but my thing is if she can preach to everyone else as if she has this grand Manuel on how to maneuver life then she needs to making a mess of her own life like practice what you preach or please just be quiet because the hypocrisy and lack of know how is very annoying coming from her so if you have it together then act like it if you don’t, don’t come off condescending telling people how what their doing wrong when your the gen z of fk ups.
At the end of the day, though, her mom is still her mom. She doesn't get to drop the ball because she's grieving. Belly and Stephen are grieving, too. They need family support that goes beyond just them being there for each other. They need comfort from their mom.
Yea Belly was basically picking up the pieces from her break up, her surrogate aunt dying, and then carrying all the slack from her mom just checking out. At the end of the day Laurel didn’t even know half the stuff that was going on with her kids and stopped showing up for everyone, including Beck’s kids. Belly is a teenager who is emotionally confused which is understandable, she made a bad choice but she was 16 and her lifelong childhood crush finally picked her, idc what anybody says, if you were in that situation you would have done the same thing. I’m just sad that she gave Conrad her V card, I get it, but I wish she would have held off on that. Laurel also thinks she knows everything so the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. And THIS is why I like XO Kitty better than this show! From the beginning I never connected with belly and I couldn’t figure it out! You just put it into words! Both shows are equally cheesy but in XO Kitty, we actually see Kitty grow and learn while Belly stays the same! So yeah would highly recommend that over this
Everyone handles grief differently and I think belly doesn’t really “forgive” her mom for moving on and not showing her mourning for Susannah. She said her mom shut down and even Steven later confronted Laura about being there for them. Everybody handles differently though and Belly was selfish to disregard her mom’s feelings. But I think both issues stemmed from a lack of communication
she does take accountability. she apologises for causing a scene at the funeral and also feels guilty about kissing conrad several times, and wished to fix things with jer
I'm so torn. Belly is heartbroken and confused. She also almost 17 so she's still trying to figure life out. Yes it was wrong what she did to Jere and Conrad, but she's human. Laurel should've talked to Belly and Steven about Susannah so they could grieve and then look at the nice memories. I seriously don't even know who to side with. But Belly did kinda need a dose of reality.

Laurels just basically abandoning all 4 kids rather than being helping them grieve Susannah. While Belly and the two boys are at least in the same room or house grieving with each other. Even if Conrad gets space. Laurel kind of needs more of a wake up call than belly does since belly called her mom for help and all Laurel does is come over and slap belly in the face for not answering her phone and because of belly getting super drunk and lying after getting into an argument with her rather than helping belly out with Conrad and Jeremiah. Like belly’s school problem and getting super drunk and not answering her phone problem can kind of wait to be talked about later since belly most likely called her mom Laurel for a most likely different reason. Conrad&Jeremiah need a mom figure since they lost their mom and laurels not there for either one of the two boys while belly is trying to help the two boys out while they are grieving their mom. She didn’t need to exactly be slapped in the face with the boys in the household come on now. Also a parent shouldn’t even slap a child

She also fully owned that she didn’t mean to make the funeral about her, but things happen, Laurel was more concerned about being embarrassed then her own child’s emotions and that speaks volumes. Yes it was a little embarrassing but she basically admitted to being angry and hating her daughter for months over a moment, she never even checked in with Belly to even ask her what had happened, she just emotionally abandoned her daughter, oh you wonder why the girl is the way she is

i obvisously dont like how belly played with the boys feelings but laurel slapping her was out of line. laurel didn't give her the time of day to even talk about how she felt. belly was struggling a lot of her grades, being kicked off the team, the loss of susanah and dealing with a hard breakup. at the end of the day no adult should put their hands on a child.

I don’t care what is happening or what is going on she does not deserve to get slapped. She is a CHILD. I think people forget that belly is not an adult she’s a kid making mistakes like everyone does at that age. A kid who is grieving and confused and has a mother who gives zero emotional support or who role models how to handle emotions. This scene to me honestly shows that belly should go and live with her father. The signs have been there in all the episodes belly has been taking care of herself. Parents do not suppose to know everything, supporting your child emotionally is only possible if you can handle your emotion yourself. Laurel is so lost after Susanah's death too. I have bad parents I know what is it like to be emotionally neglected, they just ain't talk to you, or tell you that you're annoying and tell you to go away. Laurel is none of that. And Belly as a young adult should be given some responsibility as well. You're 17 that's means there have been 17 years of people telling you how bad cheating is. If you still do it, you suck that's it.
She ran away from home, cheated on her best friend, got drunk multiple times as a teenager, had sexual intercourse which was also from her sneaking out, and threw a chaotic party that trashed a beautiful house but yes she's just child. No, if you're gonna make adult decisions by yourself then you need to be treated like an adult. The only thing I blame Laurel for is for not teaching Belly how to be a good person before this.

For me, I can’t say Belly deserved the slap idk guys. Belly needed help and emotional support. Susanah was almost like a mother figure to her. She could go and tell Susanah everything no matter what, with Susanah understanding her. And to loose that comfort zone, and have no one to talk to. I’m not saying she should be playing with the boys feeling like that but, if I lost a close family friend (God forbid) I would be depressed too. And to not be able to go through the proper grief and be able to express how you feel. She had to also focus on her senior year. And then when she started slipping in school her mom wasn’t there to support her, it was just her mom berating her all the time. Not to mention, when Belly was slipping at school, where was her mom in her time of need. Wasn’t she not even making sure they ate. At the end of the day Laurel is Belly mom and is suppose to be her safe zone you can’t win back trust easily. Especially if she’s never been disciplined in that type of form.

Hitting your kids is never okay and despite me being able to give Laurel grace for not knowing how to deal with her own grief and struggling to open up about it, Belly getting angry at Laurel for neglecting her feelings is valid. She spent the entire year fearing Susannah’s death and when things go sideways for her grades/volleyball, she gets told by her mother, “I’m disappointed in you,” which is such a harmful thing to say. I will say though, the slap is deserved for messing with the boys’ feelings lol

Laurel was right to slap her. Belly cannot blame her wrong actions like her bad grades, getting super drunk, and lying to her mom on Susannah's death. And she got with Jere again just bc she's missing Conrad. She may not cheat him on again next season but she's very likely going to reject him for Conrad. Belly was just not it this season.
