Jörg and I have collaborated at a distance before, but never met for real.....
Jörg saw a video of my gastraphetes and decided to make his own version in only the way Jorg can and as he is in the UK right now, I took my Gastraphetes over for a comparison with his more modern version.

@@Scout887 Pistols/handguns of that period were not necessarily more "powerful" than crossbows and, say, longbows: within 10 meters perhaps, but the velocity of such handgun projectiles would have dropped dramatically and quickly. This may have been said elsewhere, but has Joerg considered using different cams which don't have such an abrupt fall-off? If you're using your weight to draw it, the draw force is pretty constant, and since he put a lock on it, it doesn't need to be so light at full draw. Also it looked awkward to have such a jerk downwards (and the rail almost jabbing one's stomach) when the resistance suddenly fell.
@john-paulsilke893
@john-paulsilke893 3 года назад
Agreed. This is a very small hole in his ethos of design. He’s a big strong guy, (I am as well so I definitely understand) and many of his designs reflect this rough and ready attitude. Also let us not forget he’s often making a quick and dirty tool/weapon.
@solarissv777
@solarissv777 3 года назад
alternatively, adding a stirrup on the bottom of the contraption and some rubber bands could allow to use even stronger bow. Basically invest energy on pulling the bow back with your legs and back muscles, and retrieve it when pushing down (especially it would help on the initial stage of the string drawing). This solution would allow to have draw weight even higher, then shooter's own mass.

@@ricasteli The advantage you're missing is that if it's intrinsic to the bow, you can't lose or get stolen the cocking device. It's basically a long threaded rod that goes right through the stock from the butt, ending in a claw to engage the string. A kinda large wing-nut at the butt is what you wind up/down to allow the claw to reach & engage the string, then wound up until it cocks the string at the nut. Not terribly fast to use I'd think, but probably similar to cranequins or windlasses. I'd guess a lever-system built into the stock would be best for speed.

Anyone else picturing both Gents being sent back in time and opening their own smithy?

It's awesome to see how much both these guys respect the others domain. Many differences, yet they both appreciate and embrace it. I bet they hugged and shook hands off camera but didn't do so in the clip due to Covid and not wanting to set a bad example. Good move! Great guys, great channels.

What a combination that would be: Tod and Jorg. We can't wait to see that some day.

Thing that amazed me most? Watching the slo mo shots being fired. Look how little energy of the shot is lost in the arrow/bolt flexing, as it would with something like a longbow.

When shot, Jorg's version sounds like a small caliber firearm going off. So cool.

I'd like to see you guys tackle a torsion weapon. It's one of those energy storage systems that completely died out between your eras, so a modern revival take on it would be neat.

The dual bow design helps with the archer's paradox, whereas the wooden one has the string pulling off them line of fire. I would think Jeorgs would have less wear on the string.
