Thank you! I was going crazy trying to remember what kind of sander we used in shop class when I was in middle school (because I need something similar for a current project) and thanks to this video, I now know it was a disc sander.

Thanks for these videos. I watched it because the title mentioned “drum sanders,” which actually don’t seem to be covered in this video. I struggle with my 16/32 drum sander trying to sort out what grit to use, and how to keep from burning wood and damaging belts (I AM getting good at changing belts, though-haha $$$). Thanks!

Lawrence Becker It’s best to be conservative and start at higher grits. Remember 220 grit is what’s usually used for paint prep. So anything lower will remove stock at a more aggressive rate. Also the density of wood is something to consider.

Almost all professional grade machines use 6 inch belts. Hobby sanders usually use a 4 inch belt.

That oscillating sander is pretty nice. I’ve seen one but I’ve never used one.

I would mention that sanders generate a lot of sawdust, and a mask should be worn when using them

SAFETY ALERT! At about 4:30 in the video you turn on the sander and put the hole over the moving spindle. I have seen blood, bruises, and 911 calls for people that have done this. ****** MATERIAL SHOULD BE ON THE TABLE ANY TIME THAT THE SPINDLE IS TURNING.******

Very close to buying a belt/disc sander for cutting board finish/shortcuts. I make end grain cutting boards. As you know, face grain, whatever quick sanding. But once it’s on the Endgrain I have to sand at 80 grit for an hour or so. I’m wondering if I can use a belt sander to get the 80 grit stage done and then move on with just random orbit for 100/150/200/220. Anyone try it that way because if it can save me 45 minutes per board, money well spent.

i still dont see the difference between the belt and the disk. the sanding you did on the disc you can do on the belt just the same. so why a disc sander ?
