Belt modifying an NEQ-6 pro Astrophotography Mount - Part 1 of 7

This is the introduction to the belt modification project, which I have split into seven parts.
In this part, I demonstrate the problem, and set out how I'll modify the mount to fix it.
In astrophotography, replacing a chain of gears with a single belt in an equatorial mount addresses the problem of backlash. After this modification, the only mechanical transmission left is the worm gear, and this is adjustable for backlash
Backlash in your astrophotography mount prevents an autoguider (such as PHD2) from making fast adjustments, especially in declination. This is because reversing the direction your mount is moving involves a delay when the gears take up the backlash. The more backlash, the slower your autoguider is to compensate when the guide star drifts, and the worse your tracking is.
The product I'm using is the Rowan Astronomy Belt Kit for EQ6 NEQ6 EQ6Pro NEQ6Pro and Orion Atlas EQ-G with Synscan goto drives. (www.rowanastronomy.com/)

Interest video and great images. Although I wonder if such modification is worth, considering that the EQ6R Pro costs just "a little" more and it's already belt-driven. For now I'm saving up. Thanks for sharing :)

I'm looking at getting the NEQ-6 second hand and for me the belt mod would be a great upgrade since I get a belt driven EQ-6 for less than the price of the original NEQ-6. So for me it seems great.

Hi Alessandro. A good question - but I doubt if anyone would buy an NEQ6 and then immediately do the belt modification. It'd be more expected to do what I did, and use the mount for a few years before even considering it. I probably didn't have to to the modification as early as I did, because there's some adjustments you can do with backlash that probably would have helped almost as much. I guess I'm just a sucker for punishment!

Yes, exactly.
