One question I am asked a lot is what belts do I use? Here's a look. This is an overview of the belts I use, and belt selection is a huge topic. I offer a few ideas in this video.

About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

If you use a diamond plate or diamond sanding block & knock down around the seam on aluminium oxide belts, it will eliminate the belt skip, because the seam is now lower than everything else... I just started trying the scalloped belts... Also an important thing I found out with J-flex belts, if you are trying to do swooping plunges, don't use a j-flex belt, it will ruin the swoop... It's great you did this video, I just had a few guys asking me do do a video like this, now I'll just send them here... Have a great day, take it easy...

New maker here, after hand filing my first knife i made a 2x72 grinder. All that work was too much. LOL For those in the uk, ground flat stock sell 1 x 30 belts in all types. From the cubitron to trizact and also surface conditioning belts. So far as a newbie i am using the 3m cubitron, gator and trizact belts and with my last order i got a surface conditioning belt. That for me was the game changer. So for those on the fence about the cost of the surface conditioning belts, just get them, they make life so much easier. :)

Another great place to get belts is SuperGrit. They have some ceramic belts called Deer Bora I believe, and I have been impressed by them. They have good life, and are pretty inexpensive. Granted, I have only used a 1x30, so take that however you want

True grit has a ton of options in a 2×42 belt and the machine I use is a $150.00 USD Dayton. I've been using the Norton blaze and they are fantastic for mid range grits on my bevels. I noticed I can get longer use with less heat on those belts. This helps a lot on a single speed machine. They have trizacs in that size as well and they are awesome.

@nicolaasporter3215
@nicolaasporter3215 5 лет назад
@@touchMelilbro I use mine to even out the scratch patterns before hand sanding so they're not getting any hard use. As long as you don't use them to work on the spine of the knife, they should last for multiple knives. I had four blades evened out before the spine incident.

I have a brand new 1x30 belt sander (Harbor Freight) and one video I watched, the guy used some water on the bel before he started to grind. Another guy used a Spray Bottle… I’m new to this, and I have a LOT of knives, Axes, Mahetes to sharpen.

I have a wen 1x30 and am about to upgrade to a 1 horsepower fucina forge grinder with variable speed.(if you know anything else about it please let me know) I needed a good website to find some serious metal removing belts since I forge my knives AND bevels and they are pretty rough. Thanks for all the belt info!

Go through some of his older videos and you will see a friction folder and one where he started a frame lock knife, with some Damascus that Alex steele made for him. I think he started that knife about 20yrs ago now and still hasn't finished it. LOL

I think the VSM last a lot longer and almost half the price of the "better" belts. I just bought a few 1x72($5 a piece) cubitron and they barely lasted... When I 1st started, I tried every belts.. The VSM just to me are the best for the dollar...
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 5 лет назад
Yeah I really like those VSM belts too. 👍
@evaderknives
@evaderknives 5 лет назад
@flo I don't know, the 40 grit 1x72 I bought barely lasted 1 knife(I used it on my skinner collab knife to hollow grind). I've gotten a lot more wear out of cheaper VSM belts.. I just don't see it, now I did have 1 guy say he keeps water on his belts to keep the stainless cool after HT & the more expensive belts really are better for that, but i haven't tried it...
@evaderknives
@evaderknives 5 лет назад
@flo I'm not sure, which ever one comes in 1x72... The problem isn't how much it removes, the problem is they wear out faster, which at twice the price shouldn't happen. When you are working with knives, once a belt starts wearing out, it gets hot quicker, which is bad for heat treating... I've tried the blaze belts and the Cubitron and they both IMHO just weren't worth paying the extra money, especially since they didn't put out any more productivity..
@evaderknives
@evaderknives 5 лет назад
@flo Have you tried VSM or any other belts?? What are you comparing against?(I hope this question doesn't come off bad or derogatory)
@evaderknives
@evaderknives 5 лет назад
@flo Right, that's why it's important to try out different belts. Everyone has different needs... Great discussion, take it easy...

Amazon has 2x72 aluminum oxide belts in their subscribe and save section now, so every 2 months I get a few packs of various grits, and it works out in the 2-3$ per belt range. I only use AO on handles (when I actually make a knife that is lol) and rarely use them on steel, though once they get more grits I might consider switching

Great info as I am just starting to make my own grinder. What can you recommend for belt speeds?
@humwhatever185
@humwhatever185 5 лет назад
You'll want to be between 20m/s and 32m/s for steel its way too fast for wood it will burn it, but if you go slower you are going to have trouble grinding hard steel. Anyways if you can get a vfd or pulleys GET SOME its gonna be way better for wood and a lot more versatile. Good luck on your machine man !

i did get some useful info well to be honest more a rounded point of view and it was on the cheep verses oh my god i can eat for a month on that much money belts and that is if they cost more and last longer then when they are not all that good for stock removal of iron they would in my mind still work great for finish work on wooden handles on full tang knifes ? there fore saving more money in the long run than a cheep belt just my thoughts i could be way off the mark

You obviously use the 1x72 with your 2x72 grinder. Do you change the platen to a 1 by platen or do you still use the platen for your 2x72 when usina 1"belt?
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 5 лет назад
Great question. I should mentioned that in the video but I only use the 1X72 between rollers, so no platen or anything. Anywhere that is slack you can get the benefit of the scallops on the belt👍
