Above & beyond diagnosis. Excellent troubleshooting technique. Awesome to see the intricate detail of work involved in fixing rather than just throwing parts at it. Good job!
We would always dump a bit of Comet or Ajax on the pulleys. The grit from the cleanser would clean out the grooves while the engine was running. Seemed to work pretty good.
Notice the direction each pulley is rotating and the direction of the tool while he is cleaning them if done in the opposite direction it will throw a tool somewhere If it catches something "debris" in the grooves or the belt between the pulley.
i seen that done before.it does work well.never did it myself.not enough margin for error for me to do it myself.it takes so much time to remove belt & clean all grooves.but i still have my fingers when im done.my eyesight & reaction times are not as good as they once were.im the guy who could get rust in his eyes wearing airtight goggles.
One time I was inspecting the engine compartment while the engine was running. Then realized I was wearing a hoodie in the strings from the hoodie were dangling down. I got the hell out of that engine compartment and was overwhelmed with what could have happened😮
I do basically the same thing except with a brass bristled brush, softer than steel and the brass leaves a little bit of lubrication behind. (Not oil, it’s the soft brass metal) Been doing it for years, works pretty well
For some reason, I always get what looks like melted belt debris on my water pump pulley on my '07 Town Car every now and again and I only use Motorcraft belts and belt tensioner. Do you know what causes the build up on the water pump pulley?
az doesn't usually have that issue, it has occured a couple times, if it been sitting to long i manually clean with die grinder with nylon brush on it, then put a new belt on it. usually our belts down here get dried out and hard as hell. all the rubber gets stuck in the grooves.
I liked using a little barrel cleaning style wire brush when I did this on my 2011 CVPI, I find it bites the rust very quickly. I had to do it because I bought it from a wholesaler who let it sit for over a year before I bought it
Dammm I think my ford ranger have this exact problem because I just put a new belt and i have those exact sound still going on even if all bearing are not noisy !!! Nice tips !!!
If it were me id pull the belt fire the engine and clean the crank pulley like that quickly with no obstructions or danger. But I like to play things as safe as possible I like my body just how it is no missing fingers or tool stuck in my chest or face. All it takes is one screw up. What works for you works for you. Myself I'd use a brush wheel on a die grinder to clean the pulleys not being spun with the belt off.
Not telling you you're wrong just saying I plan on coming out of the end of my career with as much of my body as possible so I play things as far as possible on the safe side.
Pulleys also wear out. Check for belt contact on pulley. If belt ribs touch the bottom of the grooves of the pulley or the pulley ribs no longer have straight sides, replace the pulley.
Maybe this will help everyone in the Toyota Yaris groups. They are notorious for belt squeaks, and it's just kind of accepted that it'll squeak sometimes. Hopefully this helps us out!
The Scion XB’s do it as well. I think it’s the nature of the 1.5 motor. I’ve done everything I could to make it stop. New belts from Toyota. Special tool to help tighten belt etc. I just ignore it now when it’s squealing lol
very cool. im working on a 95 dodge ram. belt does not seem that bad. started randomly sqeaking squealing all the sudden. thinking cleaning might help. sprayi g some water on the belt to check to see if sound went away seemed to clean it a bit and make the squeak less. im thinkinh. more soapy vinegary water. sorayed in when running
I usually hit it with some talc, just a little sprinkle and the chirp is gone. Used to have those 3.3 Chrysler tensioners that never stayed together... would keep them on and quiet for a while, we would put on a smooth back pulley with side ribs so the belt wouldn't fly off rather than the expense of the double ribbed belt system.
A home made splash shield made from vinyl carpet protector hung from the frame rail alongside the front of the engine worked wonders for me. Chrysler should have done this. Those belts like to jump the pulleys when driving in the rain or making a right turn through a puddle where the tire throws water right onto the belt making it jump off the tensioner.
@@patricknesbitt4003 the tensioners would wear the bushing and lean out a tad causing the belt to ride on the edge of the pulley and at worse just off of it, hit a puddle and they'd walk right off.
I typically hit it with the stethoscope first, but hell yeah man, taking care of the customer is always what they'll remember. I really wanted to bust your balls with a crap comment, couldn't come up with a good one in the moment lol. Good work brother.
If I know people are playing ..... I Welcome the banter but if people are trying to just deliberately leave s*** comments on my page I get rid of them faster than they can take a breath
I use a small stiff plastic nylon bristle brush attached to a 2 foot length of 3/4 pvc pipe. If things go south no Metal involved. Just saying what I do to limit collateral damage. Just throwing it out there. I see no issue here. I am not trying to one up just stating what I do. Keep up the great vids!
My squeaking problem is from my serpentine belt keeps jumping a few ribs over on my power steering pump. Not really sure why because the old belt didn’t do it, it just squeaked a lot.
I'm not sure what that has to do with this engine belt serpentine belt? Can you enlighten me because it only goes One Direction and can only go on one way
He just means direction of rotation for serpentine belt. It can technically go on in two directions. They say it can lead to noise issues if you put it on opposite of the way its been running for a while
@@JNaimoli thats bologna... that belt should be able to be put on front or back If you pull the belt off you clean the pulleys and everything out you put it back on no matter which way it goes it's fine
One time when I was 18, I was at work and my mom pulled up to the garage with her truck. The belt was making a lot of noise, and as soon as the belt dressing spray hit the belt it instantly snapped in half. Sending the one and coming straight at me like a whip. However maybe an inch before it touched my face in My eye The other end of the belt got wrapped up around the crank pulley and pulled it right back into the engine bay. I will never forget that happening, it was such a fluke but it was such a deadly fluke to randomly happen like that.
👏👏 Glad you are OK!! ALWAYS wear eye protection when working around engines!! It's impossible to predict when an event will happen. Please be safe!! Me, I'll even wear a face shield if I'm very near anything (engine, trans, drive wheels, weed whacker, buzz saw, etc) that is running ... got to protect yourself.
You can stop the engine, remove the belt and use a small steel brush to clean each pulley of rust and buildup, and spray it down with a solvent. Works every time.
Nick read the pinned post my guy Your lacking here and I said that in the video please don't have me acting a fool because someone is trying to one up me It won't fly here and you know that, I already said in the damn video what you just freaking said
Ford Boss Me, I write articles on car repairs and cars for the local paper. I found out there are so many different kinds of Belt Brands it is nearly impossible to explain. All with different prices. Good comment you made, "If you don't know what your doing, don't do it." Especially changing out a serpentine belt.
Hog Balls, i bet you change serps with the engine running...when i was a kid saw my uncle weld up gas tanks without draining them, from a distance. He always said, "As long as you don't make a spark you're ok but if you make a spark you're dead." ....He died of old age at 87.
I use this trick as well. Did it on the wifes jeep and she started talking. I was digging in a bit when it threw the belt. Got a nice hit from the belt but it cam off because the crank pulley slipped right off the hub. I was wondering why it would cut a belt edge every 4,000 miles or so. New crank pulley and belt and purring like a quiet kitten...
I had a 2016 Ford Expedition with 45k miles come in the other day for a general inspection, customer was going out of town. But anyways everything checked out okay the only thing I noticed was that the brake pads on all 4 rotors where wearing unevenly but in unison with each other if that’s makes sense. Front inside pads were at 7mm while outside was at 4mm. Rear inside was at 6mm while outside was at 3mm. This stumped me because it was happening to all pads, I thought maybe there was a tsb or something so I checked and there was nothing, I had never seen this before. So I informed the customer and told them I honestly had no idea, I told them maybe Ford now has primary and secondary brake pads, but to go to the local dealer and have it checked out because I was truthfully stumped on why that was happening
This is a “separates the men from the boys” type of trick, because that belt squeal can become a real pain in the ass. And ears. As long as you don’t go into the direction of rotation on the pulleys, it’s all good. Just have to think it through. That engine runs so smooth!
You really shouldn't show thing's like this. I mean look. How you called out Scotty for being dangerous. This is crossing that line Not trying to be a dick. But I'd hate to see something like this trip you up!
I mean if your not capable and you do it, that isn't my issue I don't need to be careful of anything I clearly tell people just because you see me doing it doesn't mean you should ITS NOT MY PROBLEM
Right that's why I said if you don't know what your doing sont attempt it I'm not everyone's baby sitter on the internet and they need to pick and choose their battles
Never thought of that, I'm gonna have to do and give the boss a stroke, just remember stay on the trailing edge of where the belt leaves the pulley and not on the leading edge of where the belt enters the pully
Man I thought I was the only knuckle head that did this, a gasket scraper and a steel wire brush are magic to a squeaking drive belt. Tech beware though, fingers may suffer if caution is not practiced!!!
AGAIN - GREAT VIDEO 👊👊💪💪👏👏 but considering the engine is running, THIS IS NOT for DIY-ers. Wear eye protection, or even a face shield. If any debris or specs come at your face, be protected. Interesting you posted this now, my 07 P71 occasionally makes belt noises last couple days. Ordered the Gates kit - belt, tensioner, and free-wheeling (clutch) pulleys for alternator & idlers. (I don't know how old the present setup is.)
It just sat for three and a half years and now the guy has a Mercedes but he is actually considering keeping it if somebody doesn't come along with the right money
Man I’m nervous just watching you do this. And I know you know what your doing. Don’t try this at home average Joe! That belt will grab that took and impale you or the car faster than you can blink. You’ll have way worse problems than a squeaky belt!
I was told that cheap, Dayco belts and old, worn out ribbed belts, are known for this. I switched to a Goodyear Gatorback. No more chirp. The next time it rains, or goes through a car wash, that belt will start making noise again.
If only they would make the pulleys out of stainless steel instead of mild steel. Just a thought. Oh, wait, that would cost a little more. Can't have that.
With the engine off take a dab of silicone/RTV and apply it to the ribbed side of the belt. Start it up and see if the noise is gone. I use a long handle pick for this groove cleaning task too, works great. Anyone trying this for the first time, always work on the pulley at the furthest point from the belt. There will only be a problem if the belt grabs your tool.
Well unfortunately I am now writing this to you from heaven, I tried this and the engine ingested me, span me around a few thousand times and spat me out the exhaust. RIP me.
Like I said if you're not used to doing this don't try this I clearly stated that so I get that everybody's going to leave their little comments but I did say that
I do it on vehicles i can - and make sure the belts arent stretched and no noisy bearings ! do not put stops queel on serp belts ! v-belts yes -serp - no
@@FordBossMe i know you didnt ! its that if you dont clean the grooves on the pulleys the belt looses traction - belt dressing will degrade a serpintine belt but not v- belts - thats what i was taught !
I am quite shocked by the amount of corrsion on the block, and the amount of rust on the cars you work on.😲 They are not really all that old are they?🤔 Here we don't see the quantity of rust even with age. You might see a bubble or two in the panels where rust is starting after 20 something odd years. But, usually that really flakey rust would no be considered okay here. I am guessing around Chicago you get plenty of Snow off lake Michigan in winter.🤔❄☃️ So they salt the roads to combat it? Hence, rusting the undersides of the Vehicles. Engine bay too? woah! 😮🤔
EDIT: this happened a few months ago and has nothing to do with this video, I’ve known about this method I did this on my truck and applied too much pressure and the belt immediately grabbed my index finger and smashed it in between the ac compressor and belt. The ridges in the belt made perfect tracks across my finger and imbedded a bunch of crap into it. I’ve still got rubber dirt and oil that’s stuck under my skin but I’m lucky it didn’t break my finger
@@FordBossMe I’m not a time traveler, this happened 3 months ago, nor is it a personal insult to you. I’m honestly upset that you took it that way because I enjoy watching your videos, I’m not trying to attack you at all
I just don't want somebody to see your comment and think that you made a choice based on a video that I made without making an educated decision first because saying stuff like this without completely explaining it like you did with the second message could incriminate me and it could cause people to call my dealership and start making complaints Thanks for explaining
This may be the first video I disagree with you on. Showing something that is highly dangerous and having to constantly tell the viewers to "do not try this at home" is kinda irresponsible. You may not agree with me. All it will take is ONE DUMBSHIT to try it and have several of his fingers removed. We watch these videos for your professional insight, not dangerous shortcuts.
I don't put out these videos for you to agree with me or anybody else to agree with me I put out these videos to show people how to repair things and possibly help other technicians whenever new stuff comes out or things that they may not have dealt with I'm not begging for your approval or anybody else's approval.....I'm just hoping for a good community of people that can come together and actually use some common sense and understanding instead of trying to dramatize everything and act little cry babies If you feel like this is dangerous and you attempt to do it you are not my issue you were the issue yo begin with
