If you hadn't already noticed, the Philippines is having a huge push for electric vehicles and renewable energy. You've probably seen e-trikes and e-jeepneys going around the streets of Manila, Cebu and other parts of the Philippines.

BEMAC FB: / bemacbeet
The BEMAC 68VM is an LTO-compliant electric tricycle which can carry one driver and 6 passengers. Although there's physically enough space for 8 people, overloading the vehicle will lead to quicker wear and tear of mechanical parts.
Thanks to a 4.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, this etrike has a charge time of just 4 hours and a range of 60KM with a top speed of 50KPH.
At the front of the vehicle you'll find a modern disc brake and at the rear you'll find drum brakes and the 5kW AC Motor and flood resistant gearbox assembly. This EV trike also supports regenerative braking which pushes power back into the battery while braking.
These e-trikes fit in perfectly with the LTFRB PUV modernization program.

Yep, the push for e-vehicles is a win-win situation for everybody, even if you are a petrol head. If people will dump their ICE vehicles, there will be more used cars in the market which will drive the prices down. (Hopefully)Yey! There will be less demand for gas and diesel which will hopefully drive the price down as well.

This is not a 'tricycle' since it can't be pedaled. Fix the title. My ELF is a tricycle, it can be pedaled. This is an e-trike.

+Popeye Gordon perhaps it's not technically correct per the definition of "tricycle" but most people still refer to motorized trikes in the Philippines as "tricycles". I'll think it over though, I might still change it anyway. Thanks for the correction.

Rode one of these in intramuros recently, worked great. These would be perfect for areas where PUVs and trikes are banned like BGC and Ortigas. Residents lack the option of public transportation that fills the niche between walking and taxis. It can be a 30 minute walk from Shangri La Plaza to Metrowalk. Doable, but not comfortable, especially in the summer heat or monsoon season rains. Many residents would gladly pay 25 pesos for a 5 minute jolt through town.

So far, that's the best possible replacement for motorized and pedal-powered trikes. No noise and zero pollution. Hope u get to test drive one for a review. awesome video as always.

+David Hutton from what I've read, they're using.the tech of.the Japanese parent company but manufacturing them inside the Philippines. Maybe we can tour their warehouse / manufacturing plant some time.

for this to be successful, metro manila needs to build a network of ev chargers. I wonder if 60km is with 7 passengers? range anxiety is more of a concern since we don't have infrastructure in place? any plans by the local govt?

They're working closely with local government units. I'll probably write a blog post that goes into more detail about their partnerships with LGUs, the Japanese Government etc. The 60KM range is based on a constant 20KPH speed which is probably pretty typical of a tricycle in Manila if you consider stopping and starting. I don't know if that's fully loaded with passengers or not. It should be pretty easy to setup charge points for these vehicles because 220V 20A is nothing special. Many household circuits are capable of that because of aircon units and high powered electric stoves/cookers.

Gadget Addict i think one of the most practical uses of these e trikes and e jeeps is to shuttle people around naia. it would be a showcase to the world when tourists see the shuttles instead of using the taxi to go to another terminal, another good area for that is moa-solaire-okada-picc routes along the bay. well one can wish!

Wilco Wortel gasoline range extender? do you know if they have regenerarive braking and maybe a solar panel on top to charge the battery?

ohhh great idea, I totally agree with you on that! I'm going to suggest that to BEMAC, maybe they can make it happen! These units do have regenerative braking but no solar. I'm not sure how easy it would be to add solar because of the lithium-ion battery compared to lead-acid. It's doable but probably more expensive because the components aren't as common right now.

+1 for looking under the vehicle. One must always look under the hood to see the manufacturer's care in craft of the item. Glad to hear its got good headroom. Kinda tall guy myself. Dont fit into the traditional tricycle. Also, man.. Needed more shots of the booth babes. hehehehe

This is nice quality ! Tell Mr Motto that 60km is not good at all even for the city: They must put doble batteries for 120km minimum and that is more than possible at this time. Good but not enough Mr moto!

That's true. Although a quality motor, lithium-ion battery and VCU are always going to be a large portion of the cost.

robert james yesssss, we could hack it exotically!What about discard all of it's batteries, and replace them by ultra capacitor banks instead of batteries?and use repulsion type motor-generator, very high torque and very high voltage, but it's very scared of ankle deep street floods, since it could kill people's and animals wading in the flood,since normal operating voltage is around:1800 DC volts, there are simple ways to avoid this incident! Even average electricians could improve this system.I'm not even electrician, just an electronic hobbyist.Trying to play around radio shack.

Any expectation for import to USA and estimated cost when you do that? They'd make nice short errand vehicles. Like my 5 mile run to the grocery store. To be viable for mass sales, price is very important.

I use a lot of LiPo. Those are appx 3 to 4 year life.under extremely abusive use. I have some Lion that are over 8 years old and still working at >80% rated capacity when new. I like Lithium batteries.

+Sharkus not a.dumb question :) it wouldn't be very easy to pair them up but it could be done with some extra components. But it would do very little to extend the range.

Many people are asking for the price and no answer, I wonder why? If you can only go 60K thats about 40 Minutes and then you need to charge for 4 hrs, that is not convenient.

You would have to register it, but it's already LTO-compliant so no problem there. I don't know the exact price but I've read in the newspapers that it's somewhere around P450,000 which is roughly 9,000 USD or 6,700 GBP. It's an investment but the components should last many years. Even the battery is from a premium brand, Toshiba.

No, BEMAC doesn't. But it's worth noting the solar panels only extend the range. Most of the power still comes from the batteries which are charged from the grid.

Aside from the vehicles themselves, I'm a fan of what LTFRB are trying to do with their PUV modernization program. Proper salary for drivers instead of earning per passenger which means they have to 'fight' other drivers to get passengers and leads to a lot of problems on the road. It should work out better for the drivers, passengers and other road users. There's a lot more to the program than just that but it's a bit long to go into on a RU-vid comment. BEMAC is only a small part of that, by making electric vehicles available locally, but it all adds up and all the pieces are starting to fall into place.

So cool that this may in time help relieve the air pollution. In visiting Manila, I remember being sickened by the fumes in heavy traffic. Hope this is a trend that spreads as the technology becomes more affordable.

20a x 220v = 4400w x 4 hours of charging. Too expensive on electricity unless they're using solar charging stations.

Good point. Electricity is expensive in the Philippines, and solar energy isn't suited for handling base load demand. A good compromise would be to have a fleet of these vehicles operating out of a depot with a small solar array. Use the fully charged ones during the day, and charge the depleted ones during peak power output of the solar array.
