[Disc 06: The Sony/Tree Demo Tape] / PRESERVATION
A full digital transfer and restoration of the 1991 Sony/Tree demo tape.
DISC INFO:
Also known as the "Ben Folds Demo Tape" or "Nashville Demo Tape". I decided to name it the "Sony/Tree Demo Tape" to differentiate it from the other Nashville recordings. Null bought this tape for a ridiculous amount of money, partially funded by a couple of great friends in the Silver St. Discord server. The scans are done by flacguy and the transfer was professionally done by the Vista Group (thanks to everyone who helped out!). The tape itself had some artifacts from degredation overtime in Guilty, which I patched up with the original 200kbps MP3s. I also did some slight additional de-noising and de-crackling in RX 10 on top of the lineage as well as matching the speed up with the Best Imitation of Myself version of the tracks. I think that Ben could have easily released this as a solo album and it would've been a cult classic, and I could totally see how someone could even prefer this over the self-titled.
These were recorded on a 24-track tape recorder in 1991 (year confirmed by Ben in his memoir). Most tracks are collaborations with John Mark Painter and his wife, while some select tracks were recorded with Ben's trio at the time, Jody's Power Bill. The sole exception being Philosophy, which was done entirely by Ben.
