The Health Through Peace conference took place in London on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th November 2015. It brought together over 700 health professionals and health students to learn about and discuss issues related to war, conflict and militarisation.
Ben is a former British SAS soldier who refused to return to Iraq and left the Army, citing the “illegal” tactics of United States troops and the policies of coalition forces but also that the invasion itself was contrary to international law. He expected to be court-martialled, but was instead let go with a glowing testimonial from his commanding officer.

A follow up event to Health Through Peace will take in the Summer of 2017 - this will be a bigger, longer event, outside of London. In the mean time, please join the #healthpeace movement and take action in your community today. Visit www.medact.org/healthpeace

Wow!!! One of the most powerful and inspiring speeches Ive heard. And in many respects, applicable to the Covid situation, where the masses, rather than soldiers are blindly following government orders through fear.

The whole point of him speaking is that he has done the army training, been in the SAS, experienced tours of duty in Iraq and what was Yugoslavia and realised how wrong it all was. Speaking from experience he tries to change people's minds about the (ig)'nobility' of war. What do you do about it? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eccMTIcd3ww.html&ab_channel=OxfordUnion

He was talking about the US and UK special forces smash raids on thousands of civilian houses. Their orders were to blow holes in the walls, raid each house, arrest any men and to trash the place looking for any computers, drives, passports, ID, photographs, documents etc etc as quickly as possible. All the men were sent off to US interrogation camps, many of whom were then moved on to torture in Guantanamo base. By the end of the war, it was admitted that almost all of these men who's homes and families were ransacked, and were tortured and detained for years after were completely innocent people. British and US intelligence services got the "intelligence" for all these thousands of houses to raid by sending agents into Iraq with huge wads of cash, offering it to anyone who'd tell them where any insurgents were living. Basically, loads of random people just told these agents any old nonsense to get their hands on the cash, as they lived in desperately poor villages. He isn't a prat, he knows what he's talking about unlike you lot of armchair internet warriors. A lot of special forces operators top themselves not only due to PTSD (which is a blanket term for all kinds of different psych problems caused by battle and military conditioning) but also due to the shame of knowing they've done some wrong things under orders from the MoD. Many are left alienated from the command structures and politics behind what they thought was a worthwhile job. Of course some of what they do is extremely worthwhile and good overall, but not all of it. And only those who work on certain dodgy operations, like the Iraq smash raids hunting for insurgents based on bogus intel, can see first hand when something doesn't add up. Maybe try actually listening and paying attention and learning about all the complex problems he's talking about. Instead of sitting behind a computer feeling reactionary and butthurt at the idea that our military isn't always used justly. It isn't. Get over it, life isn't black and white and people like Ben need to speak out and bring these forms of corruption and ignorance into open discussion.
