element14.com/tbhs - Ben completes the Apple 1 Replica. In the previous episodes, he built the 6502 computer and got it to function with an LCD and a homemade keyboard. Today Ben builds a 1970s style case to house the computer. When the sleek, wooden case is finished, Ben demonstrates the complete replica.

Whenever I see one of his shows, I always wished that I had more time for my own electronics projects like this. I've been completely redoing my portable Atari 2600 with a bigger screen, internal lithium rechargeable batteries and new case (a thin wireless router case. Router/hub cases make great portable cases, BTW) and have been doing it for almost 2 months and only about halfway there. I work on these things really, really slow because I always think I'm going to mess something up!

TKTmon I would like to see this as well! I first heard about Ben Heck in a gaming mag that was talking about his Atari handheld, and also showed off a few others he'd done like his buzzsaw PS1. I would love to see him revisit some of these designs now that he has more tech on-hand to make them work.

i ran an infotec nearly identical to this and also installed a vac bed. use a proper vac pump! as for jigging... i used to cut 20mm acrylic/polycarbonate stuck to mdf with nice fabric based double sided tape. works wonders. ill see if i have any pics of it all :) keep up the good work. i dont own a tv and your show is literally my weekly tv program lol
@minor0confusion
@minor0confusion 9 лет назад
the 20mm was cut in 4mm deep passes with a 6mm single fluted cutter btw. could run long series 3mm slot drills all day but the feed was too much, would be supprised just how quick you can cut acrylic held only by tape! i mean BANGING the machine round full speed and no problems, i also ditched the coral/plotter messaround by switching to artcam. there is a post processor made for your machine just sitting there ready to go, converted a trend 2.5 axis machine into a full 3d profiling machine (im talking 5gb+ programs) SO easy to use/intuative :)

Hey Ben, wouldn't be easier with a alternative design for the vacuum table with a central vacuum port? Utilizing grooves in the table surface and some kind of rubber string to seal the needed part.

I'd like to see revision 2 of this project. I was curious as to why you didn't print a circuit board for this instead of hand wiring the whole thing. Also, the case looks great, but obviously could use some refinement. I love all of your projects, but would like to see more "finished" work. Or maybe I should get off my butt and make my own version :)

On my Bell & Howell Black Apple II, the "G" button has the word "BELL" written on it to generate the bell ascii code which you'd get if you held down a control key... harking back to the teletype days. Of course, there were no official keyboards for the Apple I, so anything sorta period goes...

There are some simple keyboard encoder chips I’ve used for small projects like this. The 74ls922 handles 16 keys, and the 74ls923 handles 20 keys, so you’d have to use 3 of them in this case. They’re nice though, they have built-in debounce and 2-key rollover, tristate outputs, there are also CMOS versions (74C922/74C923) which will run from between a 3 and 15 volt supply. www.soemtron.org/downloads/disposals/74c922.pdf
