CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins) pushes the rowing men to the brink of exhaustion.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This 1959 version of Lew Wallace's best-selling novel, which had already seen screen versions in 1907 and 1926, went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Adapted by Karl Tunberg and a raft of uncredited writers including Gore Vidal and Maxwell Anderson, the film once more recounts the tale of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), who lives in Judea with his family during the time that Jesus Christ was becoming known for his "radical" teachings. Ben-Hur's childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) is now an ambitious Roman tribune; when Ben-Hur refuses to help Messala round up local dissidents on behalf of the emperor, Messala pounces on the first opportunity to exact revenge on his onetime friend. Tried on a trumped-up charge of attempting to kill the provincial governor (whose head was accidentally hit by a falling tile), Ben-Hur is condemned to the Roman galleys, while his mother (Martha Scott) and sister (Cathy O'Donnell) are imprisoned. But during a sea battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of commander Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins), who, in gratitude, adopts Ben-Hur as his son and gives him full control over his stable of racing horses. Ben-Hur never gives up trying to find his family or exact revenge on Messala. At crucial junctures in his life, he also crosses the path of Jesus, and each time he benefits from it. The highlight of the film's 212 minutes is its now-legendary chariot race, staged largely by stunt expert Yakima Canutt. Ben-Hur's Oscar haul included Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for Heston, and Best Supporting Actor for Welsh actor Hugh Griffith as an Arab sheik.

Typically "leadership training" from con artist "specialists" with an impressive company name, prospectus, and sales pitch. And the Yuppiefied corporate world falls for it, just like in "Dilbert." Thank God I'm done with it!
@thesoultwins72
@thesoultwins72 3 года назад
@@wayneantoniazzi2706 .......LOL - interesting perspective. But I must agree. There are some highly 'suspect' organisations and so-called 'experts' out there offering leadership skills training that leaves a lot to be desired. Mind you, it might interest you to know that leadership skills training is [by far] the single biggest skills training topic and a US$365 billion [annually] industry. Indeed, 85% of students that enroll onto MBA programs do so purely to learn leadership skills. The irony of all this is that if you look at the standard of 'Leaders' we have today [in business and commerce, politics and government, sports, the entertainment industry and virtually every other area of life] we are saddled with some of the most incompetent, corrupt, uninspiring and inept 'Leaders' imaginable. Clearly, something is going very wrong. Interestingly, a recent study among top skills recruiters found that “oral/verbal communication” was number one - yet, traditional management skills came down at the bottom! So there is obviously a huge 'disconnection' here between what some training organisations would have you believe and what the 'business world' actually wants?
@wayneantoniazzi2706
@wayneantoniazzi2706 3 года назад
@@thesoultwins72 Thanks for your thoughts! You know, years back a former Secretary Of The Army, Stanley Resor, made an interesting observation on leadership, ot the lack of it in todays world. If I remember correctly it went like this: "The reason we have so many poor leaders is this. All too often those in leadership positions have seen those positions open up and then compete aggressively for them. So in the end we don't get good leaders, we get good competitors." And he followed it up with: "And when havoc strikes, and the competitors are found wanting, that's when the real leaders come out of the woodwork." I don't know what the answer is, except in the business world possibly a return to the old ways of doing things where irregardless of your education you started at the bottom and worked your way up with those above you watching you and judging your performance. There was no "fast tracking" in the old days and no MBA "quick ticket" to the executive suites. The system wasn't perfect, but it worked. It's the way the military does it and has always done it. Having been there I can tell you, it works, at least most of the time. And in the case of the Consul, Quintus Arrius, you can bet he didn't arrive at the position of the emperor's "go-to" guy overnight either!

The lightning in this scene is also beautiful. When they rest, for instance, you see that the room is lightened with just a handful of oil lamps I presume. I wonder how much light was there in really on such galleys.🤔🤔

Every Year my dad and I would watch this movie, our first big TV we watched this movie, he loved it and I did too, he was a man who would not like to go out but I dragged him to the movie theater for the premiere of Gladiator, He was in awe of the spectacle, for this one this was one of our favorite scenes of the film. Every time I see the opportunity to watch this i watch it alone now. I miss my old man, I'm sorry for not enjoying you more as an adult dad!!

Not one frame of CGI. Amazing piece of cinematic art. It would be impossible to make such a movie today using the same production techniques - it would be cost prohibitive. Same with Lawrence of Arabia, The Ten Commandments, and Spartacus to name a few such epics.
