A marvelous masterpiece of a movie and the real story is happening in the background, Jesus our Lord giving Ben Hur hope with water at the beginning and then new life at the end. That's the heart of the movie. Believe and be saved.
The term "Masterpiece" has become an overused, trite cliché in this age of excess, repetition, and convenience. One has only to sit and watch this film and listen to this marvelous musical score, produced over sixty years ago, to realize the true meaning of the word. Few films are as convincing as this one. Made before automation and computerization became the order of the day, it epitomizes true cinematic genius. That genius collaboratively went into the production of arguably what has become recognized as the greatest film ever made; as evidenced by its long standing renown and artistic respect.
Amazing how the four horses pulling the chariot were grays at the introduction of this scene from Ben Hur but somehow managed to change color to blacks when Ben Hur was alone with them at the end.
Love the moment when Caesar receives the Imperial insignia from the pillow holder a little distant from his hand, the divine Caesar seems angry enough to send this guy to the galleys! Little touch of humor there in this massive mostly serious epic which I saw when it was first released.
Why won't the current owners of the MGM film library re-release this movie to theaters ???? It will absolutely make as much money as it did originally.
I've read the book. It's still impossible to wrap my head around the idea that it was written in Indiana and New Mexico. It's like Mozart's libretist moving to New Jersey and opening a grocery store. Culture shock.
Who remembers the pod racing in star wars they must have got it from benhur in the chariot race ben hur and masala chariots lock together and in the pod race anakin pod racer locks with saboa pod racer
Miklos Rozsa was normally an excellent composer. Why was it, though, that every composer who worked on Roman films gave them this shrieking, bellowing brass and crashing cymbals? There's not a lot of Roman music extant, but what there is sounds nothing like this. Nice to see no CGI. It would cost $400 billion to make today.
I think now it looks a little overdone...the Roman legions in the Greatest Story are less glitzy than these and more gritty as would desert conscripts be...archaeology has informed the authenticity of reenactment since the late Fifties when all these plastic replica sets were designed and mass produced.
