OSCAR WINNER:Best PictureBest DirectorBest Actor - Charlton HestonBest Supporting Actor - Hugh GriffithBest CinematographyBest Art DirectionBest EditingBest Costume DesignBest Special EffectsBest SoundBest ScoreExperience the visual splendor, thundering action and towering drama of this record-setting film; winner of ELEVEN Academy Awards (a feat not equalled until 1997's Titantic and 2003's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King)! Charlton Heston, in his Oscar-winning role, is Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish nobleman in Palestine whose heroic odyssey includes enslavement by the Romans, vengeance against his tormentors during a furious arena chariot race and fateful encounters with Jesus Christ. "Best Director" Oscar-winner William Wyler masterfully grips the reins of this enduring and spellbinding spectacular. For the special "50th Anniversary" release, Ben-Hur underwent a $1 million restoration -- frame-by-frame from an 8k scan of the original 65mm camera negative -- making this the highest resolution restoration ever completed by the Warner Bros. studio.

You are right. Charlton Heston played in three of the best movies ever made (not counting the technology like special effects since they get improved every year). I mean in regards to the storyline, acting, music, and set design. Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, and El Sid are still some of the most entertaining movies ever made. The expression: Bigger than life defines Charlton Heston. He was a formidable actor.

Historical evidence seems to show that Roman war ships were not manned by slave rowers, but by paid oarsmen. Slave rowers were used on civilian commercial ships.

Great scene! But what always has puzzled me is, why Quintus Arrius, as fleet commander, takes on control of the ship's artillery and archers, a job that should be done by a subaltern officer or an NCO, and why he commandeers the maneuvers, thereby passing the ship's captain? He should be on that tower, overseeing his fleet's deployment and actions, and ordering appropriate signals. And he had better foreseen to protect his flanks by a galley on each side, shielding his flagship from getting rammed.

@@colliric Maybe, maybe not. But it made a point why romans never used slaves for war galleys. They would panic in the worst moment and doom the ship. Also: Even if they were rammed, the rowing men could still pick up arms and turn the tide.

Actually since Pitch was used to preserve the wood, tar was used for the ropes, and basically a lot of tinder dry wood..... Let's just say that using fire was a very bad idea! An accident on your ship could easily cause it to go up like a funeral pyre!!! Also, the Romans basically would maneuver, drop a heavy plank with a metal spike on it onto the enemies deck and then use their superior arms, armor, and fighting men against the other side's sailor to win the day! Hence why they wore pretty heavy armor when compared to the other side. (Remember it is extremely hard to swim when you're carry over a quarter of your body's weight in metal armor, not to mention impeding your body's movement!!!)
@skippylance1591
@skippylance1591 2 года назад
Instead of ramming speed, the Romans should be pronouncing, "Warp Factor One!" Then when the enemy's ship is near, they can change to, "Warp Factor Two!" with the rowers rowing more hurriedly...et cetera.

Reading the books of the New Testament, we probably asked ourselves more than once: *"Why 2000 years we do not see those miracles that accompanied the Сhurch of Christ in the I century, as described in the New Testament?"* Why do the so-called preachers of Christ have to prove that Jesus really existed and atheists boldly deny the historicity or divine origin of Christ? Maybe because the Сhurch of Christ has not existed for 2000 years? The Сhurch does not exist in the form in which it is presented in the books of the New Testament, but there are Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and other christian sects claiming to be the place of the Church, but they not have the only thing that distinguishes the divine from the human and is characteristic of just the Сhurch of Christ -the reinforcement of the word with signs, that is, miracles (Mark 16:15-20). Therefore, some researchers doubt the historicity of Christ, and some of them are not opposed to declaring him a an ordinary philosopher, teacher. But even if Jesus were an ordinary philosopher, his disciples would be ordinary followers of Jesus. And they would not dare to write about the miracles that not only Jesus, but also his disciples, could perform. If there were the Church in our time as described by the authors of the New Testament books, where miracles are performed, the sick are healed, where prophesied, and the dead are raised, no one would doubt the historicity of Christ. Then there would be the same controversy throughout the world as in the first century - Jesus the Son of God or the false prophet who seduces the world by miracles. As a result, we can say that the emergence and development of christian sects and atheism was the result of the fact that over the 2000 years the Сhurch of Christ did not exist. Find *"The Mystery about the Church of Christ"* video on RU-vid. The video reveals the prophecy of the disappearance and reappearance of the Church of Christ before the End of the World. Watching this video will give hope to all who sincerely seek God and will interest those who are not too lazy to think freely.
