I live in a country that has nothing to do with this conflict, and it baffles me how many people are uttering strong opinions and going to protests and so on without knowing anything other than "people died" about the conflict. There is an enormous propaganda machine in place dedicated to amplify this conflict and raise sensationalism and hysteria and righteous indignation and fake moral outrage over actual facts. This propaganda machine is waging war against the western civilization using tools supplied to it by western civilization. Israeli Hasbara fighting against this propaganda machine and trying to inform rather than manipulate, is severely lacking. People exposed to the propaganda machine are conditioned to become hysterical and morally outraged, even though in terms of damage to innocent civilian population this conflict is not remarkable (not that any innocent human life lost is trivial and not tragic). People are not aware of many conflicts and atrocities in the immediate region where civilians were TRULY targeted for murder, because it would not benefit the propaganda machine to let people know of this. So most people are ignorant.

It's the unfortunate "youth dilemma", basically young people are more prone to radical and anarchist ideologies and thoughts due to an insatiable hunger for the new and better future which is why it's easier for a teen or young adult to join radical movements. Herd mentality just switches people's brain off which is why they tend to blindly go with the flow and give zero thought to the legitimacy of their or group's actions. This has been seen with the attempts of socialist revolutions and climate change movements.

Look up how many Palestinians had been killed in the Westbank (not Gaza fyi) before October 7th and not a peep from anyone. What about the 20,000 kids in concentration camps without trial? Are those not considered hostages? Besides all that, why in the world are we paying for any of this? I know you know the answer. Shame on everyone.

His final point about joining a church or religion is exactly what happened to me. I picked up a big white bible, Catholic edition on sale in a bookstore , realizing that this was the entire substructure of western reality. I started to read. I came across the book of Wisdom, the book of Sirach, and the actual words of Christ. Something.... love... got to my soul. I walked into a church and went to confession for the first time in over a decade. To my utter shocked surprise, and it was not a psychological after effect , I literally was overwhelmed in a cloud of grace. A total enveloping of love that I knew to be Jesus. I will never forget that moment. That day, instead of feeling the heat of the sun, I felt the warmth of the sun. And from there I had a thousand questions , doubts and confusions ,but I was led out into the light. I am so very grateful and highly recommend it as perhaps the only path. We literally are moved by and made for love.

That is because western democracies are founded on Christian values, by picking up the religion, you go back to those core values, some of which have been updated in our democracies mind you. I wouldn't say that going back to religion is the best thing, essentially you're going back in development and lose good progress as well, throwing out the baby with the bathwater, but when your society strays too far from these values, going back to the roots can help you recalibrate. I think we need to find the sweet spot between core Christian values and progress, some of this has definitely been achieved in certain Christian sects, but I am no expert on those. This is not to bash your faith, I think faith can be very helpful to an individual, but it is important to keep in mind that religion isn't the optimal thing, it has it's own faults as well, which we need to be wary of. After all, religion doesn't come from God, it comes from people wanting to get closer to God, and people are not perfect.

Christian values didn't manage to form anything like modern western values and governments for around 1700 years. It was enlightenment values that did so. "The Enlightenment featured a range of social ideas centered on the value of knowledge learned by way of rationalism and of empiricism and political ideals such as natural law, liberty, and progress, toleration and fraternity, constitutional government and the formal separation of church and state." ... "The central doctrines of the Enlightenment were individual liberty and religious tolerance, in opposition to an absolute monarchy and the power of religious authorities." (wikipedia). See the 1700 years before that for what "christian values" result in. There has fortunately been a great deal of work since to fit christian values into our modern enlightenment values such that people like you can imagine the later to be the result of the former. At best you could say some of the basic principals of Jesus were inspirational. One of the most important founding fathers of this country, Thomas Jefferson, in fact made his own bible with the aim to eliminate everything but the passages which could be directly attributed to Jesus. He wound up with 46 pages. "I have performed this operation for my own use, by cutting verse by verse out of the printed book, and arranging the matter which is evidently his, and which is as easily distinguishable as diamonds in a dunghill. The result is an 8vo of 46 pages of pure and unsophisticated doctrines".
@DenethorDurrandir
@DenethorDurrandir 20 дней назад
@@entelin I'll have to strongly disagree here, the modern enlightenment values are mostly just a rehash of the values Jan Hus preached (treating everyone equally, logic based education etc.) and while the Hussite rebellion ended with a compromise from the Church, it lead to those values being implemented in the religion, if only locally. Coincidentally, the values Jan Hus preached were strongly based on what Jesus preached according to the bible, but those values were almost never practiced in Christianity as the religion itself was created for peaceful conquest rather then to impart virtuous values.

Unconstrained vision vs constrained vision. If you don't know the bottom line of human behaviour everything else you do downstream will be wrong. The baseline of human nature isn't the noble savage, in an applied societal framework with limited resources it is warlordism. And that is what we've had for most of history. The west is the only civilization and model which have deviated and advanced from our lowly origins. "Liberation" and deconstruction of the west will not lead to an altruistic utopia, it will merely be a new era of warlordism, regardless of what the useful idiots abroad and at home want to believe.
@commonwunder
@commonwunder Месяц назад
@bearnord4665. Unfortunately, the deviation of the West... from 'warlordism' was under the auspices of Christianity. Now that homogenising force has been de-clawed... the West is directionless. All there is... is a fear of overt nationalism. So politics has been demolished in order to de-claw the possibility of any new form of nationalism. This has led the West into a state of perpetual stagnation. A malaise that can't be cured. And people are desperate for meaning Ain their lives. And the West can't offer them anything. No new hegemony can be allowed to take shape. So everywhere you look... everything is putrefying.

Great comment. This perfectly captures the flaw that people on all sides of politics have. Westerners fail to understand that the "high trust" society they live in, is actually the product of thousands of years of careful, deliberate, cultural development and institution building. This leads to a false belief that trust is the natural state of man, when all historical and contemporary evidence points to the exact opposite! as an Israeli i can easily answer in a bunch of ways: first please tell me you didn't realize the entire world didn't fund Hamas through UNRWA clear information have confirmed it. *ok now that the elephant in the room is out of the way, let's get to actual arguments* 1. Israel have been paying Hamas before it was super radical terrorist government (if you don't know Hamas started as a services providers in Gaza to an extent, Israel has been paying it to help civilians from time to time) 2. Israel have been paying Hamas to leave it alone (a fool's errand but one that did have a slight effect) oh you are starting a conflict? here we stopped you, we bombed your launchers, take the money the L and stop attacking. so Hamas did that for like a month to rearm. 3. Israel also preferred a stable hot situation to an unstable cold one, a hostile government that always gave Israel a reason to keep up the military had an argument for being better then outright conflict in Gaza that could easily spill over to Israel proper if unprepared. generally i still oppose the idea of funding Hamas but i could see the point idiotic as it was. (my father was even in the military and i remember asking him "why don't we just take Gaza over and occupy the region?" and he responded with "because we don't want to control the people/territory, we just want to be left alone and they might eventually give up") which you can see the mistake in the logic xD. Israel also has a history of not doing anything unless it's really the last straw where they can't ignore it (be it in Lebanon, Gaza or even during the mandate period when the main military group for the Jews was the "Haganah" which translates to "the defense" aka a purely reactionary force

He is good at making his views clear. Whether his views match the reality is the whole issue. "everybody knows that" is not a valid source to back a point in a discussion. "Hamas is stealing the Hunanitarian aid" (in some other versions: to make sure the population starve so they hate even more the Israelis") is a weak conspiracy theory. Hamas is made of different kind of people not all of them are cold blooded psycopaths. Besides, in the war zone Gaza has become, they can't control much. Humanitarians who returned from Gaza witnessed that "you don't see any police force, or armed persons, yet we didn't see any crime, people are sticking together, helping each other" Gaza is not in a "Walking Dead" dystopia where livings are preying on other livings". The reason is simple: they all hope that they will overcome that, and the day after, they will have to live with what they did during this terrible time. And you need to like the person you were.

Ben keep saying that October 7th was a security failure, but that isn't much of a diagnosis. It is far too vague to be useful. From what I've heard from journalists who regularly engage with Israeli politicians, October 7th was a failure of belief or imagination. They had plenty of intelligence to support the idea that Hamas was about to attack Israel, but they were incapable of believing that is what Hamas intended. Instead of stating a bit blandly that it was a security failure, Ben should label it more specifically.

People who are honest don't need strawmen arguments in order to make a point, they just introduce the nuance needed to such a subject.
