Ben Sheppard leaves Chicago with some new fans in NBA front offices and others bragging for believing much earlier. The Belmont product put on a show in the third NBA Combine Scrimmage, scoring an efficient 25 points (8/10 FG, 3/5 3FG) alongside sharp-decision-making and defensive activity. Silenced critics of MVC competition level with an all-around showing throughout the week.
The 6-foot-6, 21-year-old wing was one of the top mid-major players in the Country this past season, averaging 18.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while earning First-team All-Missouri Valley and All-Defensive team honors. Sheppard shot an efficient 41.5% from three-point range on 6.0 attempts per game, impressing with his comfortability hitting shots off-movement.
Sheppard is a late bloomer who grew up playing the point guard position before a late growth spurt in high school. This comes as no surprise once you watch him play, as his intelligence is showcased on both ends of the floor -- operating out of ball screens, setting up teammates in transition, moving relentlessly off-ball for open shots, and even defensively where his anticipation and instincts help him hunt the passing lanes for fastbreak opportunities.
