Bench test: McCoy Redhead .09 diesel model airplane engine

A close friend gave me this McCoy Redhead 09 diesel motor this past summer and this is one of the early test runs of the motor. Fitted with a 9-6 wooden prop, the motor ran around 3 times with the needle valve set per instruction manual, which now seems way too rich. In subsequent tests, the motor would not start and I've been advised that the O-ring on the contrapiston is likely shot - it is a ~40yr old motor after all. I will remove the head and replace the contra piston o-ring with a buna-n ring that will hopefully be durable and allow the engine to run again.
thanks for watching

I had one of these when I was thirteen. I was using it in tether boats and when I broke the crank pin it broke my heart.

Get a battery starters, saves you from getting the “bent finger” problem. And every small airplane builder knows what I’m talking about. I had that problem about 65 years ago, now I have a arthritis knot on that finger that can really hurt when rilled up. Great vlog, thanks for sharing.

Because a starter will bend the conrod.

Had a small Mills several years ago. The same starting problem, flicking the propeller round and round. However, once it caught on, it ran well with plenty of power. Never installed. A friend making a small boat asked for it

Not so wise with a diesel to use a starter. Bent conrods can be the result. Some diesels are easy starters. Others just require getting to know the compression and carb settings.

That's a nice little engine, play with it a bit, and you'll find a nice piece to put it in and fly. Thanks.

Use Ether Kerosin Castor oil fuel mixture, castor oil is lubricant. Adjust compression and it will start and run till fuel tank is empty.

Yes, you must close needle, finally revs up when fuel empty ;-)

Neat little motor and I wonder what designs were on the market that fit it as a power plant. Would be nice of course to hear it peak out on power delivery. Thanks, Paul in Thailand

A close friend wouldn't wish one of these on anyone. The teflon contra-piston didn't survive a few test runs.
@SA-FormerlyCreamy

This was designed as a diesel! It isn’t converted. The contra piston isn’t Teflon on this engine, it’s made of real metal and has a rubber gasket!

@jimbo2629
@jimbo2629 3 года назад
You can use a half A starter but you risk bending the con rod if it floods. Not a good idea here, as it was started rich.

@tomnallen2
@tomnallen2 3 года назад
did you try a Buna-N ring, or something like that? I've heard they're longer lasting, but have not tried one. I've moved on from the McCoy and am now running an OK Cub .075 diesel which also has an O Ring. We'll see how long it lasts. I'm in the process of building a 53in span Megow Cub right out of an ancient kit for it. Should be fun.

Very nice engine. I'm guessing that diesels can swing big props for their size. Has a nicer sound than the glow engines around the same size too. You gonna put that puppy in a FF airplane?
@tomnallen2
@tomnallen2 6 лет назад
hi vw - yes, with more torque, diesels can swing larger props at a given displacement. This was the redhead's first run in decades and I had it running rich (you can see unburned fuel in the exhaust). This resulted in low rpm and the satisfying sound. Better to lean it out and run at lower compression to get lower rpm. I need to replace the contra-piston o-ring before running it again....and yes, I'd sure like to have this in a FF scale model; a biplane at 40in+ span I figure.

My 12 year old son Junior was using some of this Duco Cement to put together a model airplane when he passed smooth out at the kitchen table. His head hit the table so hard it left a knot big enough to tie a horse to. Had to run him up to the emergency room they kept him up in the hospital for 3 days. There is something in that damn glue that made him pass out. Does anybody know who to contact with this company? Because i'm out about 900 dollars to the hospital, not to mention the kitchen table that got destroyed when Junior hit his head on it. It really pisses me off that they could sell a glue that could be that toxic, and make a kid pass out. I'm wanting some money out of this deal. Who should I talk to about it?
@duderoony
@duderoony 5 лет назад
ALL glues use some form of solvent and I think you’ll find that the instructions on the label will have stated “to be used in a well ventilated area”..... To be honest at 12 I would have been supervising him. Just saying.....
