I don't want to call this a "review" because these are just my very subjective opinions.
Hope you will like the video.

Welcome to the 940 family Denis. Great video as always. I have been waiting for this specific video ever since your first Ganzo. I have two 940s, and partnered with my Sage 1. Köszönöm.

Thank you. The Sage 1 is another great model. I like it very much. That is also one folder on which everybody who saw me use it told me how pretty it is rather than asking me why I carry a knife with me. I consider the 940 to be the best version(the 940-1 and 940-2 however are also in the back of my mind) Szívesen.

@@SpartanJohns ran into this review after finally breaking down and buying a 940-2. I have been a hardcore spyderco carrier for the last 6 years. My Native 5 with S35VN has been sharpened so many times that the blade shape completely changed. Anyhow I do enjoy the 940-2 very much. Great opinions on the 940, I have found it to be the almost perfect edc knife myself. I believe if you take the grind down thinner it wouldn't be as robust of a knife and would take away from it's ruggedness as an all around edc knife..... my opinion......... thanks for the video and your honest opinions on this awesome knife!

Hi Denis!

My grandpa left me some money and it started burning a hole in my pocket. Wow the 940-2 really is the real deal. One of the best pocket knives I have even owned. Literally a game changer and a life changer. I used a German made K55K for years. Heck for the price of a 940-2 I could buy at least 4 of those in top factory offering. Thought about some of my other kids but, Mike is my favorite. So all for one in my book these days. Kids are like cars. You gotta have 4 or 5 till you have one you like.

@@SpartanJohns I have the bench made Osborne 940-1, the carbon fiber S90V blade and I love it! I used to be in the army, and had benchmades pretty much the whole time. The one I had in Iraq was called “the infidel” ironically enough with D2 blade steel. I liked it so much that I bought another one when I got back, so I would definitely check out that beast if you haven’t already. It was really expensive about US$530, but it is a stiletto out the front switchblade pretty much as I’m sure you know. What a great video - thank you! We have very similar thoughts on things. I would say the only thing wrong with the 940 (why I don't carry mine) is that the handle is simply to small for me. This is exactly what makes the ever-fugly PM2 SO great (handle ergo's), it just fits me in every grip I use. 940-1 is worse example in my mind as it is simply to light over-all for my preference. All my negative ..., I realize are attributes for someone elses designation for an "EDC" knife. The 940 is also great in the amount of blade length they get into that handle (a negative in the PM2 = handle is left wanting for more blade - say ~ 3.8" would be ideal). For the record, I still love the 940. A lotta knife in a small package - what I really like about a Dragonfly (my money-clip for a number of years now). Benchmade is like a box of chocolate ... HOW TRUE! Good stuff man ;-)
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 6 лет назад
I felt the same way as you do concerning the handle. For a lot of years. Had smaller knives and never really liked the small/thin handles. However...interesting fact: the design copy of the 940 from Ganzo...that one is much larger..and with the same 20 dps edge angle i felt the 940 much more stable in hand while cutting willow. Of course I understand that some like bigger handles...and are not so attracted to "weightless" knives. I felt like that for a long time. Give me a good edc knife, 4 inch blade, comfortable handle, solid feel in hand, good carry options, good steel and I dont care that it weighs in at 6 ounces. I carried the Ganzo G720 for a long time to test it...it weighs about 6 ounces...I had no problem. But you do feel it in your hand. As for the Dragonfly...I have one! It is small and lightweight...I sharpened it very well and carry it around the house. And around tha cabin sometimes. I love it. As a moneyclip? I must admit that I have not thought about that...i carried my UKPK in that role...but the Dragonfly will be a better choice As for the 940-1....i am very curious...but do to the price...i don't think i will pull that trigger soon....

This might not be a great knife for everybody. It is for me but i most definitely understand why some people can't see themselves using it as an edc. For some it might not have enough handle or blade, some might not like aluminium handle scales and some might not like the blade shape or material. Others might prefer a knife which is easier to take apart and clean. My goal here was simply to talk about my experiences so far with the knife and hopefully to help the ones who are interested or have second thoughts about it, whether it is to buy or not buy. I am glad you still enjoyed the video Thanks
@grandriver3152
@grandriver3152 6 лет назад
SpartanJohns ......Yes, we all enjoy all your videos regardless of the knife you choose to focus on and over the years you convinced me to buy several knives. This video made me rethink edc in terms of size of blade vs overall size and weight. I went and got the first knife of my collection, the Kershaw Oso Sweet and have been playing with it since. The clip is not awesome but it's cheap so if I lose it I'll just buy two more. Same blade length as my current edc, the Ganzo G730, but much more compact and way more fun to open so I may switch back for a while. :-)

Hi Denis! Nice video! I have few Spyderco knives and many of them have the same feature: some safety if the lock would fail..Para2 and Delica4 for example. It looks like many Benchmade and also that 940 is like: if the lock fails there is no choil or safe area, so on that situation the blade cuts straight to your fingers. How do you feel about that issue? Thanks! Keep it up!

Ive missed your videos Denis! I have been quite happy with my Ganzo reimagining of the 940. I had the same model that you have and I liked it too. But I sold it and the prices got insane after that and I never got another. Its one of the more perfect EDC knives out there. I still prefer my Para 2 to it though. Mainly because I practice as if my EDC could become a survival option and I prefer the handle for reason you outline. You look thinner, have you been dieting?
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 6 лет назад
I like Ganzos mainly as work knives. In that capacity, for that price, they truly are hard to beat. The Para 2 is indeed a bigger, more comfortable and more capable knife for outdoor/extreme tasks. However I still prefer a well made axis lock to the compression lock. I will most likely never give up my Para 2 simply because I think it is one of the better models that one can buy still...plus it offers so many choices concerning handle materials, colors and blade steel... As an edc, for me, I still prefer the 940. It is, quite honestly, very different than any other knife... I have been trying to be more active and eat better...but a real "diet" does not go well with my personality :))

I got delivery of my 940-2 last Saturday (08/19/2023). I've been into Spydercos since 2021. Earlier this year, I bought my first Benchmade. A 556 Mini Griptilian. It's like that knife planted a seed. I saw the 940 last week. Initially I was skeptical about the knife because I'm normally more into beefier knives but I decided to pull the trigger. I think it's the best decision I've made this year. I love my 940. The blade doesn't look slicey because it's not that tall and the grind starts about a third of the way down. I tried it on thick cardboard and while it doesn't slice like my PM2, Manix 2 or Native Chief, it slices okay. The action is great. I didn't touch the screws. I just wanted break it in naturally like what I did with my Mini Grip but I ended up putting some oil in the pivot when I cleaned the blade after going through cardboard. It drops shut, is perfectly centered and there is absolutely no rock or play in the blade. It's quickly becoming my favorite among all the knives I own.

I had 2 BM 940 folders. I thinned the grind out on one of them That became my user and I loved it. Only reasin I sold them was because I moved and needed the money. But yeah...the 940 is superb. If you ever decide to thin out the grind you will absolutely love it. As it comes it is not the best slicer, as you said, but it is a great edc knife.

Great review, you have me sold on the 940. I loved when you said you use your knife just for kicks, breaking down cardboard, zip ties etc. I have very few reasons to carry a pocket knife, I can get everything I need done with my victorinox spartan, but I love knives I & find myself cutting up things that don't really need cutting up. My wife finds bits of paper & cardboard all over the place & it drives her nuts.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 года назад
Thanks for the kind words. I am glad you liked the video! In my day-to-day life i really do not need more than the vic sd on my keychain. But I do like all cutting tools so I actually go out of my way to cut stuff with them. As for the bits of paper/cardboard/plastic being everywhere....that is the case for me as well. I do keep a small bin near my desk but things have a way of jumping all around. The 940 is a more expensive knife. Personally i like it. I have 2. One is almost brand new and one has been modified and used very much. I thinned out the grind and enjoy taking it hiking to just whittle wood. I realize that the 940 is not "everyones cup of tea" but if you like the way it looks and are attracted to the reduced weight, narrow blade and sturdy tip and are not afraid of reducing the edge angle and maybe thinning out the grind, it can be more than excellent in just about anything you have to use a knife for. As for women being driven insane by our hobbies and their "marks" around an ON the desk/table...I am very lucky. My wife thinks my passion with using/collecting/sharpening knives is "very useful"(her words) as she can always find at least one sharp knife in just about any room of the house.

Funny, I always hear people praise the open back door and but, like you, I've had too many times where a good sharp edge was ruined by the other contents of my pockets so I've always preferred the closed back design.

I don't carry much loose metal stuff in the same pocket as my knife, however I do often want to clean out lint, food or dirt. It's not a big deal to clean out a closed back knife, but open is quicker and easier and sometimes means you don't have to take the knife apart.

Hello John, thank you for the video. I have two irrelevant questios if you don't mind, I tried to google them but I hit the language barrier soon enough to give up miserably, I thought you may know the answer to these. So the first is about knives in Romania. Is there some limitation of blade lenght you can carry legally in Romania? Would it be legal for example to bring my Bravo1 to my bicycle tour? Like packed away in my panniers, not on my belt of course. How about a victorinox in my pocket? The secound question: Is it legal to carry a 400ml bear spray? It wouldn't be packed away like the knife, it would be on the side of my handlebar bag or in one of my waterbottle holders on my bike, it would be on seeable and easily reachable spots. Thank you for your help in advance.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 6 лет назад
In Romania it is not legal to carry anything which the authorities may consider dangerous. That includes a small Victorinox knife, a kubotan or... any impact or cutting tool. If you are ridding your bicycle thru Romania and have tools stashed away in your backpack you are not very likely to encounter any problems. Such problems may occur if you bring such tools to any public places. Or get into other legal issues(such as barfights). Then the Police might search your backpack and you might be taken in for questioning where you would have to explain why you would actually have something like that with you. concerning the Bear Spray. I do not know, however as long as it says that it is a bear spray on the container and you do not use it on humans you should be fine. I carry an anti dog spray when i go outdoors. A lot of people who go on bicycles in the city do as well... i hope this answers your questions.

is the operative word "dangerous?" Romania has a rich history and cannot see the authorities having an issue with a pocket knife considering it is a part of the cultural makeup. As such, is the knife the issue or how one uses it?

Putting loctite on the pivot screw is just part of getting the tension exactly where you want it. You can find the sweet spot where there is no blade play and also blade will fall freely when lock is disengaged, just takes a minute.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 6 лет назад
Yes, i know... However, here Loctite is not as readily available as it is in the US, nor as inexpensive, and since I do not use it as much... in the case of the 940 I have not managed to find that "sweet spot". it can either swing freely bit have bladeplay or have no bladeplay but not swing freely. More than in Loctite I would be interested in the Nano Oil I keep seeing some people use...that maybe in combination with Loctite....
@naturallyadapted2096

You can also use things like teflon tape, certain kinds of dental floss (look it up beforeyou buy a random one to use) and the like in place of loctite
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 6 лет назад
teflon tape i have tried...but it just didn't "stick" - pun intended. It does not bother me... Like i said here.. for me...it is not a problem. i can tighten or loosen the pivot with other edc items so it is fine...

Sorry for the late reply. The 940 is definitely a great edc folder. Depending on how large your hands are...it might feel small. If your Buck 110 is just barely enough for your hands...the 940 might be a bit small. it is a capable folder but it does split the fans in 2 groups those who love it and those who hate it. I have to admit that my favorite benchmade is the 940(but I reground mine-thinned out the grind substantially) however they are quite expensive. Im on the fence with this knife and really thinking about pulling the trigger but doesn't the all metal handle get cold in the winter months? I live in central wisconsin and right now as i text this its -25, i just dont know if thats practical. Maybe the 940-2 would be a better option for somebody in colder climates but am afraid that knife may feel flimsy in comparison and possibly have handle flex. I would like some feed back from anybody that has time. Thanks
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 5 лет назад
I have had a couple of G10 Scales for this model I did not like the feel in hand so i stuck with the aluminium. Lots of people say that about metal handled knives. that they get cold in winter. I can see that if you leave your knife outside. But since this is a pocket knife with a pocket clip, i assume it will spend most of it's time in your pocket and only come out for cutting chores. I have had this with me down to temperatures of -17 Centergrade. Had no problems while working with it. Below that I really can't tell. Sure the 940-2 would be a good choice if the Aluminium scales are something you want to avoid. But instead of that I would go with the 940-1. Yes, it is more expensive but then again the handle scales are carbon fibre, contoured and the blade is s90v. When it comes down to the 940 i think that half the experience is the feel of the handle scales. In the beginning they feel sort of like a tough rubbery material, they smoothen out with time... There are cheap knives with metal handle. you might want to get one of those and see how it works out for you regarding the low temperatures. I would really be thankful for a feedback on that from someone who actually lives in such conditions rather than all the wannabe people on youtube who "imagine" such conditions. Myself included!

Hey Denis, I really enjoy that you are "back again" - your knife-related vids are by far the best I personally am aware of (and beyond that you helped me out several times via the comment section, which I appreciate a lot). / Very good review again, though the 940 will never become my personal favorite. I like carrying blades sporting longer cutting edges, but the Endura or military give me all I´d ever need. BTW: You showed your Military briefly in this vid: Did you use it from time to time? And if: The tip is still there?
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 6 лет назад
Thank you. Concerning edc tasks i never found myself needing more cutting edge than the 940 offers. But yes...the Endura is by far a more practical choice. As for the Military. Yes, I still use it. It is one of my favorites and I really enjoy using it. The tip is still there. I mainly use it in the woods or around the cabin whenever I have pants with bigger pockets. Being that the blade is so long and relatively thin I never feel the need to use it so much for prying...so far it has held up great. I have modified the tip slightly on the Para2. I felt that the shorter blade and more solid handle could use a sturdier tip
@wartstein8814
@wartstein8814 6 лет назад
Thanks for your reply. For me the 940 is in the Endura-range concerning pure cutting edge, isn´t it? Though the Endura is an overall larger package of course. For me personally an EDC-Knive has to have some capacity in food-prep too, and here the Endura FFG is really capable./ The 940 somehow is "a knife like no other knife" and at some point I´d like to try one over the course of some month. I am really undecided on it, even do not know if I find it aesthetically pleasing or not. Sometimes I really like the looks, other times I feel there are too many corners and edges both on the blade and the handle; Military and Endura are very smooth-lined and "plain" in comparison. One of my first knives was a Mini-Griptillian (which I still own) so I have experience with the Axis-lock. The lock is cool, but I am kind of a back-lock-guy. I love that it is NOT that easy to flick but offers some resistance. Trained myself (being a climber, so strong fingers are a plus, ) to flick my no-blade-play Enduras and Stretch and Delicas open with every finger on both hands ;-) (of course using the pinky I have to do it in a reverse grip)
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 6 лет назад
The 940 is indeed "an acquired taste". I think that the Endura has a slightly longer blade/cutting edge. Since the Endura is about as big (bladewise) like the Military. For cutting performance and as a slicer, the Endura would be my first choice too. Also (i am not a climber) I see what you are saying about the possiblity to open the knife with any finger while the knife has no blade play. That is one thing I also consider important. Being able to flick open a knife which has no bladeplay. It is easier to get a smooth action on back lock knives or liner lock knives than the Benchmade axis. Some exceptions do exist, of course. I look at the 940 simply as a great edc knife. Endura, Delica, Military or Para Military all have a more comfortable handle for heavier tasks than the 940. Coupled with a FFG blade they are definitely better performers. Where the 940 wins out is the size/weight and "playability". Also for edc tasks where you might actually(has not happened to me) have to cut something with the tip and it not sustain damage. Outdoors you(as a climber) might take the Endura cu cut cordage fast and with ease. And for more dificult tasks, in your backpack you will probably have a sturdier knife. But if given the change to only carry one knife, a sturdy tip, is not a bad idea. However for the ones who actually use/test blades, in the case of the 940, a regrind would definitely make sense
@wartstein8814
@wartstein8814 6 лет назад
I personally find a backlock generally much harder to flick open than a liner or most other lock types.. really had to kind of train for it, especially concerning the fingers of my weaker (left) hand.. You are totally right about having a stronger tip is sometimes very important. For that, I have an Endura saber grind, which is remarkably good in whittling too (better than the FFG!) with the factory edge, cause the prrimary bevel goes higher up the blade than on the FFG. And than there is my saber grind Delica combo edge with a strong tip too - the only (partly) serrated blade I kept. First, the serrations will cut even when dull (or better tear apart) and even wire I guess - so it is a good "emergencyknife". Plus, Spyderco serrations make the finest wood-shavings I have ever done. Other than that, I do not like serrations though.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 6 лет назад
Backlocks are not as "flickable" as other locking mechanisms. However you can play around with the knife, polish the washers, put a bit of oil and then you only need the muscle memory to do it. I had a partially serrated Delica. I modified it. Not it has a "Scandi-vex" edge on it...low edge angle...somewhere near a Mora...And that one is really smooth. I do not like serrations...i have them in my Multitools and 2 cheapo knives. But I found that I have little use for them, other than kitchen steak knives. i always have a sharp(if not shaving then paper slicing) blade on hand and serrations just get in my way. I tried them but failed to see the use. In climbing yes...they might be a huge asset as they will grab the thick rope and start the cut.

Cant imagine how i missed this video. I am covered in shame. That said... I am so happy you got the 940!!! It was a grail knife for me and i was only upset by two things when i got mine...the scale was smaller than i imagined. I did watch a lot of videos about it but i never focused on the specs in that way. I was surprised and at first disappointed. That quickly went away. lol The only other issue i had with it was the scale materials. I had wanted the brighter scales that came with the Ti version. Alas i didn't want to cough up a pay cheque in order to obtain one. All of that out of the way i can only agree with you in all that you said about this 940. I love mine and it finds its way into my rotation more often than any other knife. I love the texture of the scales. it has never let me down in any situation. The angle could indeed be shallower. but its certainly not a deal breaker as they say. the axis is sublime for me. And this video was very well done and again I am glad we share a love for this beauty. Always a joy to see you my friend. Be well Craig

@SpartanJohns

@@trevorthomas1030 well...the standard 940 is more a sharpened prybar than anything else. Yes, it works. And if you reduce the edge angle enough it can be a good cutting tool. For regular edc tasks...most might be fine with it. That is until you thin out one grind, let's say on a Delica, and see how much better it feels in hand doing regular edc tasks....like cutting up a big cardboard box. Then you start to wonder: How would that knife feel? or THAT one? pretty soon you start to appreciate thinner grinds and realize that you don't really need 0.7 mm(28 T) behind the edge. The best advice I can give you: try a knife with a thinned out grind! Assuming you don't cut thru wire on a daily basis(If you do: carry a Wave/Surge). You will quickly see how steel is less important than a good cutting geometry. If you care about this subject...i do have lots of reviews where I talk about this. I also have many videos on this subject on my patreon some of which are free, no need to pay/donate. I love cutting tools. and I love to optimize them for what I need. The idea of a "bulletproof" knife is nice...but more a gimmick invented by companies. @SpartanJohns , if you want a thinner grind why not just buy a different Benchmade with the qualities you want and need in a knife to begin with? 🤔
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns Год назад
@@trevorthomas1030 For more than one reason. Buying a different knife requires more money. I can thin out the grind by hand with very little cost. I like the model only wish it performed better.(including the blade shape) There are very few knives which have thin grinds(in the .2-.4 mm range). From benchmade the only one I found so far is the Taggedout. Last reason is: i like to test knives. Sharpen, see what I can do with a knife/steel and where the limits are. I suggest you try it. Get an inexpensive knife and thin out the blade. Then do the same kinds of things(regular edc jobs like cutting cardboard, plastics, food) which you would do with your regular knife(which probably has a thicker grind). No amount of watching videos on youtube will give you that experience. Once you thinned out a grind by hand you realize how the steel behaves, you learn to sharpen and after you are done you will most likely appreciate that knife more than others due to how much work you put into it. Try it

Almost every folder without locktite will loosen slightly. That's not a flaw, its physics. And the 940 with the regular pocket clip or the deep carry clip is easy to get out of your pocket. Same as every other folder, your thumb slides into your pocket against the knife and your finger goes against the clip, squeeze and pull. Absolutely no need for a lanyard. I have been putting the "review" of the Bugout. things i like: it is a good slicer(better than others in its category). light weight, small and pretty decent to carry. for the size of it offers a pretty decent cutting length.
