I have a question. If you get this "diagonal" linear distribution of sigmas (plot on the top left of the board) and you have an I-beam, what happens on the top of the web (right below the flanges). The area in the y-height is small, and it has lot of stress. Shouldn't the I-beams have something like a X (two opposite triangles) shape? thanks
Yeah those come under composite sections and at that point stress diagram changes i. e it doesn't show diagonal distribution like this one.. Look up bending stresses in composite sections buddy..
If it becomes a cantilever, then the tensile stress will be at the top and compression stress at bottom. In cantilever beams, the top most fiber experiences stretching while the bottom extreme fiber experiences the most compression.
