In this video I take a Larch which has a very straight trunk and create a bend by experimenting with making the trunk more bendable.

Suggestion for the editor! When Peter talks about something that happened in another video it would be awfully helpful if you'd link the mentioned video in the description for easy reference. Thank you for the great videos team!

Nice video Peter, I use electrical tape to wrap around a branch before applying wire. However, in saying that I turn the tape around, so the sticky side is pointing outward. It takes a little to start the wrap but once it's in place you don't have to worry about losing or damaging the bark. As you wrap ensure that the tape is ½ covering the previous wrap. The gluey side of the tape has chemicals on it so you are better off this way to prevent. The tape is waterproof either way. However the two big advantages are that 1) it is very easy to remove with out pulling bark from the surface of the limb just gently run a blade along the branch and 2) the tape is a lot more flexible and therefore won't damage the bark while the tree grows. So once the tape is secure you are free to wrap the branch as normal. Concentrate on bending the wire and not the branch and all is good. Thanks for the videos!

Master Chan you're absolutely brilliant! I see so many trees that are of this fashion. My father's mulberry tree did the very same one year and it stood that way for 2 seasons before he cut the rest down. The weight of the one branch finally split the tree in two. Quite an amazing thing to see.

😀😄 I'm in the recycling business and as a scrapper I probably do about 100,000 lbs. a year. I have recently starting using ACSR wire and as I've walked around doing some air layering on trees, I have actually wondered. "I wonder what he (meaning Peter) would say about using this wire. I get it for free and it seems to work but he probably would think it's cheap and low class. Maybe a little embarrassing but it works for me at the moment.".....And here he is talking about how he started out using this same wire!!!! 😀😀 This completely made my day!! By the way, ACSR wire here ranges from ¢18-¢30 per pound at the scrap yard when selling it. That's cents NOT dollars. Fairly low payout especially considering it's not generally easy to come by in quantity. However, with this being said, if any bonsai artists (new or veteran) have a scrap yard near you, you may be able to buy this wire from them for ¢50 a pound. You only have to carefully cut the one plastic jacket and peel it off of the braid.
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 3 года назад
Nice that you know what ACSR is. Not many people will know what it is. But now you know that I was a genuine engineer - I used to buy it by the tonne very cheap of course as I could buy it at staff discount rates. That was back in the early 1970s which is almost 50 years ago !!

I noticed a 2 year-old branch on one of my 8 year-old in ground maples I've tortured over the years. I remember hitting the the branch with the mower last year. I wanted it for a future leader (I'm dissecting top down with air layers on the main trunks). It snapped and dangled at a 90° bend 6" from the trunk but the cambium held it from the top. I left it thinking that the branch might back bud and could use what "little" assistance from what was still alive above the break. It completely healed and now there's a hard knuckle... and a stout branch underneath!
