This pine had been wind damaged and left looking a little flat. In this video I show you my thought process when making a decision to drastically change the style of this tree.

I like the "ugly root" also. There is something about it that makes me think of a person trying to balance a heavy weight on one side and has to lean over and reach a leg across in order to balance that weight. A dancer perhaps, holding the world in one hand and trying to keep it from falling. Maybe it's the god Atlas proving his strength by using just one hand to support the earth. But that's just me and it could be just an ugly root. Peter your videos are a true gift for which I, for one, could never repay you. A million thanks!

Dear Peter, I have read one of your books as early as the 1980s. At that time you seemed like a little rebel (compared to other authors). With this video I think you have entered the Hall of Fame of the bonsai masters. As a thank you you get my ABO.
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 4 года назад
Many of my competitors didn't like me because I did my own thing and they saw me as a threat. People criticised me for the trees I used in my books. I had marvellous high quality bonsai but I deliberately chose not to use them in my book but instead used simple and unsophisticated trees in order to make my book "user friendly". But my critics missed the point. Any way my readers (like you) are the best judge and I feel vindicated by what I did thirty years ago!!
@selfmade6142
@selfmade6142 4 года назад
@@peterchan3100 I'm glad they made their way, it made me stay true to the bonsai theme until today. As they said, it was user-friendly and inspired to create something from simple plants as well. Thank you again for that.

Much knowledge imparted...everything from bonsai aesthetics and principles of bonsai styling, Jin use and how to create it, how to wire when you do not have an adjoining branch to anchor, the dangers of using too large a pot and poor soid, not being afraid to change your plans when something better presents itself, etc. Thanks for all your informative videos sir!

Wow, I was just watching a couple of videos by a woodworking channel called Stumpy Nubs in the last 2 days. He shredded 4 of his fingers very recently on that exact same grinder blade. I had never seen a disk like that and the videos he’s made about the accident explain how dangerous that particular accessory is. That being my only exposure to the chainsaw disk, I had quite a gasp when he pulled out the same thing in this video! ... I don’t think that this application poses the same problem as it did when carving a large bench, but I’d personally be a braver man than I am to ever try one after seeing this bad accident. Centrifugal force and kickback are no joke... I very much enjoy these videos and appreciate the great knowledge conveyed along with them. Also, glad to see the cordless Makita grinder, I have the same one, a great tool.

Once the roots start to regenerate followed by more foliage, This will be a beautifl tree, It's just a shame it was left in such heavy waterlogged substrate for ao long!, It may well have been dead in another year!! :( I have a Hawthorne that was dropping foliage and branches like crazy due to the awful compost, I made a large box, Lined it with sphagnum moss and dropped the whole rootball in, This was three years ago! It will be going back in to a dish next spring as it's come on so well!, A recently deceased Bonsai friend told me about the sphagnum moss trick some years ago, I've no doubt now where he learned of it!! :D
