The angels in Ayasofya were drawn by an unknown artist. What is known is that they represent Seraphim angels. The legend surrounding these angels is that they bear the weight of Ayasofya’s dome, which was once considered impossible to support.
We know that animation techniques have ancient origins. However, 2D animation is thought to have begun with two early examples in the early 20th century: “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” by J. Stuart Blackstone in 1907 and “Fantasmagorie” by Émile Cohl in 1908.
With this promotional film, we present what may be the world’s first-ever 2D animation-a secret hidden beneath the dome of Ayasofya, where millions of people have passed without noticing.
