I've been seeing them grow wild in places and i didn't think they grew wild. Felt like a message because they are also used to be a gift to help one getting through a hard time and sorrow, helps to give love through those times. Also has symbolism of a childs devotion to their mom. All of this can relate and the bright orange lillies are unmistakable and a surprise that they grew wild on a few trails I've been on. Would be fun to try using them
I love daylilies and have started collecting them. It all started with the Stella de Oro that everyone has and I’m now bored with. Well instead of digging them out and giving them away, I’m going to eat them next year! LOL! Thanks for this info! I knew to put them into a salad, but you gave me so many more ideas!
Love the lilies!! Be mindful of the type! In the Midwest, there are the orange tiger lilies that grow wild. Like Heidi said, watch they are day lilies! We also have Easter lilies that show up every year.
I was sooooo looking forward for this video since I have so many orange day lillies. Ty! Ty! Ty! You said the root/tubers are suppose to taste kinda nutty so maybe just adding oil to chopped tubers & blended/pureed could turn it into Lilly Butter like Peanut butter, Almond butter, etc.
Thank You. My favorite is to freeze the pellets and utilize in anything with tomatoes to help cut the acid. I did not know about the leaves or tubers so I am excited to give them a try.
Thank you! The old recipe I heard was battered and fried buds. Wow, I never knew they were so versatile. The Day Lillies took over Moms flower patch so we dug them all up and threw them in the back field, ... Well, they're growing there now. The first year there was only a couple, and every year there's more. And they are still coming up in the flower patch. They are evasive here. I'm looking for sunchoke now. Good presentation, ma'am. I keep having to move my daylilies, too. I love them, especially the "tiger"lilies from my childhood. I transplanted some to the impossible-to-mow slope near the road, hopeless they will take over some year...! I have eaten some while out and about doing outside chores, but they never seem to make it inside, much like the asparagus. Now that we're finally fencing the property, I'm going to grow some nearer the house, probably to edge the old herb garden.

Oakes (spelling?) daylily farm here on you tube did a TASTE TEST between 3 or 4 varieties, because yes, varieties do taste somewhat different. so that may be worth looking at. i think his wife fried them like okra
I have limited space and never wanted to grow them but this year I found out that I can eat them and I tried it I loved them! I will grow them next year
Yes indeedie. Great video that I could have used 2 weeks ago. There's always next year. Mine are all done and gone. Its not your fault though, I've been very lax in harvesting this year at the right time. 😟 Ill be digging them up and separating them this fall so I may try a few this year because I've never tried them. Jersulum artichokes are delicious but be prepared for a LOT of painful & smelly gas. Next time I prepare them will try using beano to see if that helps. They are very prolific & if you leave even a little piece in the ground you will have another huge harvest. Thank you & Mr Rain for sharing your knowledge you are an inspiration & a blessing.
Jerusalem artichokes need to be at least 2 years old to eat. Plus allegedly pairing them with savory (summer or winter) will alleviate the gas problems.
I tried to grow them one year but the slugs kept demolishing them before they could really do anything so I gave up without really having a chance to try them
What name of lilies CAN'T be used...we have some Monte Nigero(sp?) lilies and some typical lilies that grow wild, so what is not edible, since I trust what YOU do! Thanks Heidi ❤
I've found this type and a deep grass green moss out here in Mississippi. I took a photo of it and it said it was Entodon seductrix. I have no idea if it's similar or if it's has any medicinal properties. Please let me know if you know.
I apologize for being off topic; I've got a chicken question. I bought layer pellets for $20 yesterday! What alternative food can we give chickens in the winter if there's no feed to buy? Young boys', in the appalachians, chore was to kill squirrels for their protein source .
Chickens are omnivores and will eat most anything. You can even ask your local grocery for the produce they toss to give to them, we have done this before and I know many that do
I have a hybrid day lilly that has a 3 tier layered petal cluster. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that hybrids such as these are toxic and should not be eaten. Is this true?

I was wondering if their is a good plant or flower that can protect squash plants that may keep beetles and aphids away from them? Thanks! I am planning on using Neem oil when all the squash are gone and totally mix it all up and clear out the old plants because I didn't do that last year and the dirt is infiltrated with bugs and they got all over my older plants killing them and I don't know if I will have any harvest this year because of it. I spray them with soapy water and cinnamon oil after I water them every night and with a cloth that has water and soap I clean off the bottoms of the leaves and when I keep up with it they are gone, I also sprinkle cinnamon over the stems and other areas around the plant so the bugs can't crawl very well around the bushes and plants my friend told me about this. When I can't get to them for a couple days they overtake them every time, it has really been raining these last couple days and I have been feeling under the weather so hopefully they will be good. Anyway I will after I am done with the neem oil I have heard to cover the dirt with a black plastic trash bag and leave it there for a few months to cook them and do the whole thing again. Do you know of anything else I could do or would this do to get rid of the bugs? Also how often would I need to do it every year, every other year, or every three years? U could try boiling water onto soil and cover it for like 15 mins but that will also kill all good bugs so u have to add nutrients back to the soil before u plant in it again. I do this to my starting potting mixes for my pots that I grow in, mix it up, then cover for 15-30 mins. Stir everyday until soil dries out enough to plant in. Good luck.
Kind of unrelated, but in your experience, do your nasturtiums repel or attract aphids? I’ve read both online as being “true.” I was also wondering if you have indoor plants and if so, how the frig do you keep plant pests off them? And could you do a video about what you do for plant pest control? There’s a million and one videos already but one can never get enough info about it since the online world never 100% agrees on anything. Thanks :)
I do not grow veggies inside at all, they do not do well here in the winter be they inside or outside as they just do not get enough natural sun because of our constant cloud cover. I do a few common house plants but the only one I grow for medicinal purposes is aloe vera. I do not have problems with pests on t hem though years ago when we tried buying some dwarf citrus to grow inside, they must have come infested with pests that then took over some of our house plants and devasted them along with the only batch of turmeric I was growing successfully and of course allt he citrus trees died. We tried every thing and finally just had to sit everything out in the freezing cold to kill the pests knowing we would lose the plants too. It was that or lose all our indoor plants. It was terrible but it killed them and we have not had a problem since. On the nasturtiums I can say I have not seen aphids anywhere they grow but this does not mean they may not attract them either. But I did get a lot of aphids this year on my nettle but there are no nasturtiums growing around them so their could be something to that. I had read years ago that they do repel them
@@RainCountryHomestead did you ever end up doing anything about the ones on your nettle? I know you like to use nettle, so do you hose them off before bringing them inside or do you ever worry that you’ll bring a pest in from outside that will get on your indoor plants? I find myself not wanting to even touch my plants and crops outside because I worry about hitch hikers and having an infestation all over the house (there’s still like at least 40 pots around the house.) I never ever had pest issues on anything indoor or out until the summer of 2019. I unfortunately spent thousands during the rare plant craze though so I unknowingly brought home all sorts of new bugs into my ecosystem, but i suspect the plant craze has a part to do with how many pests people are experiencing these past few years since aphids, thrips, mealies/scale, and spidermites have been shipped all over the world in recent years on a heavy scale. I’m sure it’s been excellent business for pest control companies like koppert though. I did plant a bunch of nasturtium this year though after seeing how much you like them, both the climbing and trailing kinds, and yeah… they don’t repel them.. only a few of them were absolutely covered in aphids though while the others only had a few on them so i found that interesting, but i still don’t want to touch them 😅
@@jennytaylia5371 I just rinsed t hem off well but thankfully they did not get bad until I was done harvesting for the season. If they are bad again next year, I may get lady bugs again, they are quite helpful as they eat tons of aphids every day

@@RainCountryHomestead The flower, leaves, or root? I ask because our son was left disabled after illness when he was 10 years old (23 years ago). What made him ill was Mycoplasma and was part of U.S. govt Project Daylily…I believe that holds a clue how to help him. He has good strength and brain was not affected by the illness. He is what they call a “high functioning Quadriplegic” as he can feel and move his extremities but his movements are spasmodic and hard for him to control. I am eager to give this a try!! He has never given up, I will never give up trying to find ways to help him, even if it’s just some relief…and we KNOW God is in control and is SO Good ALL the time!💜 Thank You for your help❣️

If you have any orange Daylily flowers that you could start a tincture for me, I would purchase that. The reason I do not mention zone much is that it only makes up ONE part of climate. It only is in regards to winter hardiness but says nothing about the climate as a whole. We are in zone 8b but our climate is NOTHING like Deep South Homestead who is in the same zone

@@RainCountryHomestead we have them, but didn't know what they were until last year. A friend gave me a start, said they were preannual sunflowers that my husband couldn't kill. He kills everything. She was right he can't kill these and he has really tried. The chickens love them though.
