During the mixing of the capsule, the matrix reacts with the particles, releasing strontium and fluoride ions. Strontium ions react with the polyacid to form a strong matrix, which surrounds the glass particles. Fluoride ions can move freely through the matrix and are released, preventing caries. Moreover, the chemical fused seal of glass ionomers is strong, acid-resistant and forms the basis of a tight interface that prevents invasion of bacteria and secondary caries.
