Keep your peaches in control, they grow like crazy and they need to be tamed or else they will be overcrowded and risk disease. Check out our new clothing line! http:www.freshpickedapparel.com
I did some summer pruning on my peach tree, yesterday. I still have a few peaches that have not ripened, fully, yet. I am glad I did. I found a below graft branch that I had missed. It was pretty big and had come out very near the root graft and had parceled the main trunk. I cut its side branches off, first and then lopped it back in several cuts with my loppers until I had about a six inch part remaining. I then used my pruning saw to cut it back as close as I could to the branch collar. I put a piece of wood behind it so my saw would not damage the main tree trunk. I then coated the cut off stub with wood glue to seal the cut. Removing this sucker really opened up the center of the tree, because it had been filling up the center of the tree. I pruned a few other limbs and I have it in a vase shape, now. I will further prune it in January. I took out about 20+25% of the tree, yesterday. II did some minor pruning on my McIntosh apple, too, mostly stuff that was growing in the wrong direction. Very minor pruning.
Thank you. I have a peach tree about the same size and was wondering about how to prune. Good to know that those new shoots are next years peaches. :-)
Totally off topic: The seeds from your shop that I sowed last week started germinating in only 3 days. It looks like 💯 did! Excellent quality. So, when you gave us the fall coupon code I went back & shopped around on your site. Yesterday I ordered over 20 more packets of seeds. I was able to get next spring/summer taken care of, a couple new fall/winter things to add to what I already bought & even a few kinds of flowers. All for about $17 including s/h. If this next order germinates as well as the 1st did, I will have awesome growing seasons for the foreseeable future. You provide an excellent value for an excellent variety of quality seeds. Anyone who hasn’t given your seeds a try is missing out. Especially @ 50 cents a packet w/the fall sale code! Excited for the new order, for all the new veggies we’ll have next spring! Thanks so much!
This video came right on time . My donut peach still having ripe yet but the branches is all over the place and we having a lot of rain so some branches are breaking . My question is take all the fruit off or leave it on to ripe please help. Thanks
Do you ever root those cuttings you make when pruning your trees? I'm one of those guys that hate to waste anything and taking horticulture in high-school back in the day, those cuttings would go straight into some damp sand with some rooting hormone, even if I ended up giving them away to family or friends.
Hi did you already harvest your peaches and now you are pruning? I pruned my tree early spring and now I have peaches growing but I feel like I need to prune some more off but I don’t want to stress my tree out. Is it good to prune even after the peaches are growing?
Hey Luke!! Can you please make/start a pruning page or make several videos on pruning various things and at what time of the year for example like blueberries and fruit trees?!? Thanks
I need advise with my peach tree o planted in Utah! I planned it about four or five years ago in soil that was really close to the city sprinklers but still not on the ground that they constantly mow down so that it would actually flourish, and I didn’t really know if what had popped up a couple years ago was actually the peach say that I planted or just a weed, but now that it is up it actually has little fruits this year and the day the leaves are definitely peach leaves. It looks similar shape to a Christmas tree because I literally have never touched it. Should I try to prune it in some way this summer in this 100° heat or wait til next spring? our rainy season is only one month in April to may and after that we have no rain the entire year so watering is all from sprinklers. The tree looks extremely dark green and beautiful and healthy. The leaves don’t look quite as juicy as watery as yours do but they still look healthy and I don’t see any signs of fungus or any dead leaves at all on the entire tree. It’s about 8’ tall and very full but only about 10-15 fruits on it that are growing two clustered next to each other in groups.
Thank you for the informative video. I have about the same height trees, but we planted it too close to the walkway and need to be transplanted. can i safely transplant the whole tree at this point to a different location? I am in Los Angeles. Thank you.
Hey! Quick question, I live in Northern Michigan, Cadillac to be specific and I was wondering if you ever have problems with your peach trees when we get super cold weather? We’re buying a house and I would like to plant a peach tree once we do! Love the vids thanks for all the advice!
I don't see any sweet cherry trees in your garden.I believe that Michigan is a great place to grow cherries. Do you have any suggestions for pruning a dwarf sweet cherry tree? I have had this tree for 7 years and it is not producing. It is a self pollinating tree. It has not grown much even though I have fertilized it a few times. It gets attacked by Japanese beetles every year in spite of my efforts to keep them off. Please ! Any suggestions?
What month can I start to fall prune? All peaches gone last week. Too much height growth this summer, Aug 23 now, all leaves still on trees. Will be heavy top prune. I have bird netting at 9 feet over 2 Six year old trees. Want to prune back below 9 ft netting! Is August and 75/F temp ok?
Hey buddy, I have some questions. I was hoping you could help me with my green shoots coming up from the peach tree have these brown dots all over them and I just did a second round of liquid copper fungicide and I’m wondering if this is a fungal problem or am I lacking something, and should I cut those green shoots out completely?
I wish you and all the other RU-vidrs with Peach videos would mention squirrels. not one tutorial does, and my 1-year-old tree had about a dozen peaches on it and I didn't one. a squirrel stole all of them and now I'm trying to figure out how to prevent it next year problem is the lower branches are low enough for the squirrel to jump on then even if I protect the trunk. Don't you have squirrels in mi? here in nj they're everywhere
My Mother n law/father n law have a peach 🍑 tree not by choice! It started growing on its own. We bought a few peaches from GA on Vacation & we live in SC. We threw a couple pits down the hill by the bond fire 🔥 pit and it started growing. Now its huge. It's location kinda down hill. Now we get to enjoy our own peaches and we do water it during the summer. The last two years they are not doing so well. The tree started out strong on its own. I think its gna end up dying. Fruit is rotting. How long do they last/live?
Hey Luke, food for thought. you need to take the bottom branch off now because the canopy on your tree will grow and crowd the lower branches and by then that branch will be to thick and that make for a big wound that may start disease. Cut it off now and let that tree fill in, just a food for thought.
Thanks luke i have a question about dwarf fruit trees and containers.my question is what dwarf fruit trees do you recommend that do well in containers?
you have so many options such as plums, apples, pears and cherries just make sure its a grafted tree and the containers are suitable for the graft. you get different sorts of mini trees you get the mini-dwarf and semi-dwarf you also get the columnar fruit trees also which are grafted on a fruit branch so doesn't have wide side shoots very good for patios and hedges.
Get the smallest dwarf root-stock you can get for container, the smaller the root-stock the smaller the tree, which makes it easier to manage, that goes for all fruit trees.
I was told by our local extension office that you cannot grow peaches in zone 6B organically. They had to be sprayed weekly to avoid pests, fungus and disease. What kind of spraying program do you use to grow your peaches organically? What is your feeding program?
My peach is currently in The shape of a “y”. We need to prune half of it away. Should we do that now or is there a better time? Its not new growth from this year.
I have the same issue. My peach tree is about 5 years old, and I really had no idea what to do with it so I'm learning now. Its trunk and main branches still are relatively small but it's about 13 ft tall, with a thin central shoot, and then two branches leafing off to the left and right. It is not full and leafy, but rather sparse-- it honestly looks in shape more like a young hardwood tree. The issue is that the tree seems to be leaning and curving to the left because of the weight of that left main branch. I think I should trim it off, but it is a main limb (though again, still relatively thin). I just don't want to stress or kill the tree. And yes! Fungus is a major problem. Despite using neem oil pretty regularly and an antifungal in the spring, our peaches and leaves always seem to develop fungus. I'm going to start an organic weekly prevention program and see if that makes a difference. Anyway, I'm very glad I found your channel and I have subscribed. Thank you for the good information.
I got a couple of bare root paw paw trees this spring and pruned them to 18". For months, nothing, and I thought I had killed them. But they finally started producing branches and leaves, thank goodness. The only problem is that every single branch is going straight up. I dare not prune them in such a vulnerable state. But I don't see how I can get the goblet shape from this that you recommend. Any advice?
Anne Studley, Bare root paw paw s take lots of time to get established...they got fleshy shallow roots, as in pruning paw paws, they are slow to react, the cut wounds will heal so slow, so get some wood paint and cover the wounds next time you do a cut, but now, dont stress the plant too much!
Hi , I have a question , my peach have a lot of dark spots on the skin of the fruit - not inside- is exterior. What is it and how can I fix it? All the help is appreciated Thks
should prune peach tree to look like an upside down umbrella open in the middle with nothing growing toward the middle take off low branches to about 24 inchs from gd
I’ve never grown a peach tree..the one I have now is 2 years old maybe? I got it last year and it’s currently producing. When you say soft cutting you’re referring to cloning the newer shoots?
Not much pruning going on here. A lot of talking. Prune long branches so energy is to the lateral growth to form a bushy tree. More lateral branches the more following year fruiting wood. Pruning in hot weather doesn't stress the tree!! It actually helps with coping with it. Less canopy, less transpiration. Stonefruit trees are tough in warm to hot conditions. Makes some good points re opening the centre for aeration but doesn't show that in demonstration. Prune lower branches near the ground re pests and diseases but doesn't show in clip.
