Western AF Presents Benjamin Tod | "The Paper & The Ink"
Benjamin Tod, singer-songwriter, lead member of the Lost Dog Street Band gives us another tune for Western AF. A gloomy and heartbreaking tale about a song he'd swore he'd never sing.
Ben brought with him what he said was his biggest inspiration as an artist. A journal that was owned by his train-hopping buddy and best friend, Nicholas Ridout. A couple of passages were made and unfortunately if would never be completely filled. After Nicholas passed, Ben was gifted the journal by his widow and since then, Ben has continued to fill the pages.
The art through pain quote is relevant in this. If not a pillaring example of how we process grief through grief. It's an opus to loss and a kick to the soul. Just pure honesty.
This song will be released this fall along with his new solo record. A test press of that record will be raffled off at the @muhlenbergmusicmission fundraiser May 28th at @thebarddistillery in Graham, KY. There will be a lineup of Kentucky favorites including @thelocalhoneys @justinwellsmusic @loganhalsteadmusic & @lostdogstreetband of course. Tickets available now!

With each new release, it feels like Benjamin is pulling up a sleeve and showing you another scar, and the lyrics have you lean in close to see the startling truth that the hurt still throbs underneath, a grim realization that the reaping of the wound sometimes takes a lifetime. The tenderness and pain of the experience is brutally shared with the listener, and you find in that experience a truth that we are stronger than we think, that life's twists and turns and the harm it allows us to do to ourselves and those we love can somehow, in a trembling and imperfect way, eventually be used to mine strength for ourselves and hope for those willing to care enough to hear the tragic story. I cannot say thanks enough for the honesty and beauty that wraps the pain that is contained in these songs. May only good be yours as you live truth.

Ben has always had a pretty arresting voice because if its brash, unflinching honesty. You always believe what he's singing because you believe he means it. Often he sings every line at the top of his lungs, as if he needs to force the words from out between his teeth before they try to retreat. That being said, this is one of his best vocal performances I've seen. There's a gentleness to it that he doesn't normally carry. The dynamics of the softly played guitar and an almost breathy vocal performance sends this over the top.

I've lost so many friends over the years,what I wouldn't give to hear them say just one more sencetence or be able to read a last line they wrote in a journal. Life is however never fair,but I know they loved me and I loved them and that's as good as it'll ever get. Ben has been my favorite artist for many years now and he never disappoints. He truly is a master of his craft a most skillful lyricist.

I met rideout in Seattle when I was 18 with my old road dog Danny. He wanted us to go with him to Montana never did though....still glad to have met him. R.I.P Nick

You know, or maybe you're about to know perhaps, I ACTUALLY recommend your music to a lot of people that I meet in the street, who live existentially . Lost Dog Street Band KEPT ME alive so many times, even if I didn't want it to . I always say, be careful, but listen to this music if you're feelin' that way .... So, THANK YOU Benjamin Tod.

That was beautiful. Life is short and life is fragile. Make sure the people you love know what they mean to you. My biggest regrets are the times I failed to show friends and family the depth of my love for them before they departed this world.
