Bennett Cerf - Oral History - Notable New Yorkers
Interviewed by Robin Hawkins
This interview is from 23rd of January 1968
Part 2:
Bennett Cerf talks about Hal Block, Arlene Francis, John Charles Daly and Dorothy Kilgallen
______________
The quality of the original recording isn't amazing, but I think it's very interesting to hear Bennett Cerf speak about WML - so I wanted to share it with all of you WML-fans out there :D
I have tried to improve and equalize the sound, so you don't have to turn the volume up and down all the time - Hope it works...
Bennett Cerf, eminent publisher and punster, was a founder and chairman of Random House Books, a writer and editor of many humor books, and a popular panelist on television's long-running game show, What's My Line?

" we spoke English". Indeed you did. Loved the mid- Atlantic accents the Arlene, Dorothy and John used. Bennett, you were true to your roots.

What a wonderful history to listen to. We don't have people of class on TV, or even in our culture, anymore. I don't really mind vulgarity, especially if it's funny, but it's an easier kind of humor. Genuine wit is what's rare. It might lost forever, dying out with the generation before me.

It was one of if not the best show in the history of television; What's My Line all of them were phenomenal.

Hal Block was very creepy, any time a woman was on the show. Even if he was blindfolded and it was a man sounding like a woman.

Indeed. Groucho Marx's show was FAMOUS for doing the type of humor that Hal Block ultimately got fired for. I've watched quite a few What's My Line shows on here, and Block comes off as the most genuine panelist on the show. Cerf makes himself look like quite a douchbag here. One episode has Henry Morgan putting him in check for one of his pompous, long-winded introductions. And it's HILARIOUS! Funnier than ANY of Cerf's awful puns that he loves so much.

Groucho made the show "all about him." Not a team player.
