Hi Benny and Tim, you both are a great inspiration to us! Thanks for mentioning having learned at least a little Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia) with us in Bali, at the 13:57 mark. Wish we had more time with you, Benny, but I'm sure we'll be seeing you again on your travels across SE Asia. Selamat belajar, dan semoga sukses!
Love this Tim and Benny! I just moved to Mexico and I have a hearing disability. Uber drivers and myself have been in fits of laughter using itranslate. I'm so happy when I make people laugh. I'm happy to laugh at myself. I keep trying and am thinking about your programme Benny, if it offers subtitles- I can't get it without SEEING it . I read lips a lot.
It depends on what you mean by "studying". A language cannot be studied, like say history or geography technically, because it's a practical skill, or a whole set of skills (speaking, writing, reading etc.). A simple analogy would be that learning a language is like learning to play a sport or a music instrument. Language is not something we "know" but rather something we "do". "Practicing", however, does not only and necessarily mean "speaking"; in fact a language can be spoken but also written or signed. Now, the million dollar question is: can you learn a language by "studying" on your own? The answer is: it depends. You can certainly learn to read and WRITE to very high levels (provided that you get yourself a good dictionary, grammar and real stuff to read and understand), but don't expect to become a fluent SPEAKER without ever opening your mouth and speaking to another real person. On the other hand, from my personal experience of learning English (I managed to pass Cambridge English CAE with grade A), no matter how much conversation you make, without formal grammar practice there's no way you're ever going to be able to achieve the highest levels of language proficiency. You will always sound "foreigner" and "wrong". In conclusion, grammar practice AND conversation, are BOTH necessary.
Benny! I like you. I follow you. But, in these videos, you need to either tilt your camera or your face up. It looks like you're hiding or shy. Looking down during the entire interview gives that impression. Not suitable for an expert of your caliber! Otherwise, great interview.
