I was 8 year old in 1972. My 3 older brothers where rag men. They would take me to collect the horse and carts from the Jackie stables. The man was called Jackie who they rented the Horse and carts from I forget his second name. No one cared what anyone had or didn't have them days. Everyone looked after everyone else. Every week my oldest brother would pull up in the back lane for my Mam and the other Mothers in the street to go through the rags he had picked up all day long. I had to be there with my other 8 brothers and sisters while my man tried the old but good clothes up against us. There was no shame then. Times have changed for the worse thats for sure. I sit hear in tears to think how hard my Parents had it my Father worked in the Slaughter house on scotswood road. My mother had 10 kids to look after. But the bigger ones helped with the new born. That's how women then where good strict mothers they learned from having their little siblings when babies. God bless my Parents, I miss them so much. Thank you for the wonderful memories..

You can’t tell me that people weren’t much happier in those days than they are now. This country and our culture is dying out very quickly in the modern multiculturalist age. If I could go back to those days forever I would do it in a heartbeat.
@martinkulkarni3569
@martinkulkarni3569 2 года назад
‘Your’ culture isn’t dying out. Cultures evolve. It has more to do with the monstrous governments we have had in this country, turning neighbour against neighbour. Serving peoples self-interest selfishness and greed. Instilling, encouraging, and propogating racism and bigotry in our society. This includes Tony Blair who should have been prosecuted as a war criminal.

Remembering the Rag and bone man in the 1950s ! Oh boy , me mam used to send me down the Lane with a shovel to get the dung for the roses 🌹 !!! You could hear the horse coming from way off over the cobblestones . I was so skinny then , the rag man used to give me a couple of sweets when he came round , and that was a treat during rationing, heaven knows where he got them from 🤔 Great old pictures. Some good memories 👍🏼👍🏼

The roundabout wasn’t constructed in 1975. It was earlier. My siblings and I played in and walked through it on the way from Benwell, where we still lived, on the way to my friends house in Kenton Bar Estate who had moved there from our street. My family moved to Kenton Bar Estate also in summer 1972.

Wonderful to see. My father (Sam) was manager of the Crooked Billet at the bottom of Gluehouse Lane. My mother's family (the Bonners) lived in Canning Street in Benwell & I had aunts in Farndale Rd & Ellesmere Rd. My late wife & I bought our first house in Ellesmere Rd early in 1960s. There were so many pubs on Scotswood Rd (3 on our block) that it would be wonderful to have an archive of all of them.

Now I can remember long before it was a roundabout, it was a hole in the ground with and old gents toilet in it I think it might have been the old clay pit for the factory that was where the supermarket is now, born in cow gate then got posh and moved up to just behind the fox and hounds on the west road or just off the top end of two ball lonnen !!

Sad to see the once busy streets now so run down. Can’t the city council modernise the buildings and keep the heritage of the area intact, or is that too much to ask? Newcastle town planners from the 60’s onwards have destroyed the old soul of the area. All of old Byker being demolished was an act of cultural vandalism. All those old streets could’ve been modernised, all the wonderful old hotels and Victorian pubs saved. But no, no sense of preserving the community. T Dan Smith has a lot to answer for.

"Bal's shop Canning st." Did he take over? I remember it was his parent's shop. We all used to hang around the opposite corner with nohing to do. More than 35 years and it's like yesterday!

Martin Tabony Bal became a good friend of mine when I moved from Maughan Street (one of the last to leave the street before it was demolished) to Bond court. Your right it was his parents shop, but I think his older bothers took over when his dad passed on. Lots of very good memories from that area. Did you know Suli Alhadji (something like that) - he has done well for himself - worked his way through the ranks and is now a Major in the Army

Arthur Durkan Aye it was a great community. Went to Atkinson road myself, then Rutherford. Guys was that train not on buddle road? Maybe my age is getting the better of my memory - just thought it was at bottom of my street (Maughan St), I seem to remember everyone looking for me one day and finding me playing on the train - I got a right good bollocking for going down there without telling anyone first ..lol
@durkan2009
@durkan2009 9 лет назад
1234tubby Yes mate the train was in a stone park right between the top of Hugh st and Buddle road. there was a big church hall opposite between Hugh street and frank street. In that photo you can see the top of the old Vickers factory

Good photos of Sutton Dwellings but I think two of them are Sutton Dwellings Barrack Road and not Benwell. Check out No 43 Suttons Evelyn Howe and the Photo of a mother and daughter with a doll they are showing metal railings on the veranda's when all of Benwell's were brick. Also Barrack Road was three storey and Benwell four and the background shot shows three.
