So often arms designers get automatic pistols wrong. But, there's a lot right about Beretta's M93 Raffica. Despite receiving Jonathan's seal of approval, the M93R never really went anywhere, other than featuring in one of our Keeper of Firearms and Artillery's favourite cult films: RoboCop.
This is our third episode brought to you by World of Guns. As Jonathan says, the best way to see the intricate inner workings of the M93R is to try it for yourself. As an early Christmas present, the folks at World of Guns are offering 4000 codes to unlock the Beretta 93R for FREE.

The 93R very much has its genesis in the "Years Of Lead" and then the Mafia trials of the late 80s and 90s. The Carbinieri were suddenly stuck with having to provide protection details to politicians, business leaders and most importantly - judges. The 93R and the SPECTRE SMG were both specifically marketed for close protection duties. "La Scorta".

Everyone should be familiar with the Years of Lead. A decades long insurgency started by communist terrorists, on par with the commie insurgency that plagued Malaysia from 1968 to 1990.

The new Robocop game Rogue City is fantastic. It sits between Robocop 2 and 3 and hugely expands on Murphy's story while retaining all the satire, humour and bloody carnage of the films. Peter Weller back as the voice of Robo is te icing on the cake. The graphics looks fantastic.

Fun fact, the 93r is Claire's pistol in Resident Evil: Code Veronica. You can find the stock and that gives you the ability to fire it in bursts. It's also infamously effective in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 where it's known as the Raffaca.

I was about to comment that! Claire's Browning from 2 was confiscated before the game's events, and the M93R served as its replacement. As for the game's other/true protagonist, Chris Redfield, he traded in his Samurai Edge standard he got from the Mansion incident in favour of a Glock 17.

I handle the gun daily and have it proudly displayed in my home. I'd have to say it looks more like the nose of a 1930s Art Deco car, like the Cord 812, than it does a coffin, but at the same time, those car fronts are commonly called a "coffin nose". Which might be what the designers meant more than an actual coffin.

Interesting note (which you probably already know) they originally intended to use a Desert Eagle MKI as Robo's gun which at the time had only appeared in about 5 or 6 other movies, however despite its huge size still looked small in Robo's hand. The general belief is that Clarence Boddikas silenced Desert Eagle was actually an early attempt to enlarge the gun. Ultimately they went with the modified 93R thank god! They still utilised the hired Desert Eagles in the film making Robocop probably the first film to fully show the Desert Eagle well on screen. Worth noting also that KSC also made a 'cap firing' version of the Auto 9 which fully cycles and ejects shells as well as features the 3 round burst. I have one and they are vreat fun!!

A close friend of mine wrote an article for "Machine Gun News" in the late 1980s while the movie Robocop was being filmed in Dallas, Texas. He was given access to the original blank-firing prop guns to photograph for the article. In addition to the prop version, several live-firing versions were built by my late friend Tim Bixler. Tim then worked with designer Utah Conner (yes, that's his name) to build a folding SMG that would be used in the Robocop II movie. This gun was the UC-9, which subsequently became the DEB M21, following Connor's collaboration with David E. Boatman (DEB) to build more guns. That project waxed and waned for years. After Conner died it was assumed by many that the project had died with him. As it turned out, several dozen registered receivers were eventually located by an enterprising individual who managed to acquire them and have them built into fully functioning SMGs of a revised/improved design. As you can expect, both the Robocop Beretta pistols and the folding SMGs are rare as hen's teeth and command quite a princely sum on the collector's market today.

You could make a threaded barrel extension that fits onto a properly threaded barrel used with a suppressor. I mean, that's basically what a suppressor is: a barrel extension that happens to have baffles and chambers to allow controlled gas expansion. They do, in fact, make barrel extensions for threaded barrel rifles that use standard muzzle threading.

I remember reading the Mack Bolan books and how he carried a 93R. the "Beretta belle" always have wanted one, unlikely to happen.

I'm always curious about the Failure rates of given firearms. It'd be great, if you had the data, to see/hear things like that for the production weapons you present! Like, knowing that a particular model had an average failure rate that lent to it not being widely adopted, or it's longevity in the market or as a military pick would be fascinating and enlightnening!

I shot a working model in .380 of the Robocop gun. It was ported and compensated, but done with the Beretta .380 and custom built auto sear by Archangel Metalwerks. It was intended to be exported to Argentina or Italy where limitations on caliber exist, or did back then, and the sear could be pulled and replaced with an existing sear.

If only affordable conversion kits existed for civilian purchasable Berettas. Even without burst I bet it would be fun with how heavy it would be resulting in rather smooth recoil.

The great thing about Robocop is you could easily believe he can fire that gun one handed and still have complete accuracy. And of course a Beretta based gun would also make sense for Robo because cops generally used 9mm pistols when Robocop was made meaning despite having a physically bigger gun his magazines could still be refilled from the normal station armory.

I've had grip screws walk out before on 92s, so it would be interesting to see if that would cause the ratchet mechanism to move out of alignment like it did with the grips totally off.

Funniest thing is Peter Weller (RoboCop) is a historian (idk if he has any degrees) now.. hes done tons of voiceovers for history documentaries and even directed some... So kinda full circle Unless well it was him doing this video on the firearm But hes more ancient greek roman kinda guy from my memory (if u watch his movies he always brings up historical facts... N id bet thats just him ad-libbing good lines as an actor n history lover)

So is the 96 the sixth model in 9mm? Since it's a .40s&w I'd say no, leading me to believe the 93 doesn't mean 3rd model of 9mm either.

@DeadFishTheKing

Not a lot of security visible at the museum section of the armoury, lots of CCTV and the cases are pretty solidly constructed and locked. I think there was one or two unarmed security guards near the entrance, probably a few more in an office too. If they do have heavy security they're dammed good at hiding it, but honestly they shouldn't need much here in the UK. I'd imagine there's a lot more security doors and CCTV in the archives since there's more down there and less people around, but it's not accessible to members of the public and even researchers need a staff guide afaik.

An expensive exhibit, to get real copy of the movie props, but that would be a really cool exhibit! Movie Prop Guns - where you display movie prop guns next to their base guns they were derived from.
