Get outta here! This place is quite literally across the river from me and I was unaware of its existence. Sometimes when things are right under your nose, they go unnoticed. If you have not been out to Drewry's Bluff which is right around here in the Bermuda Hundred area, I highly suggest it- it is one of my favorite places and one of the most critical, yet underrated and unknown battles of the war. It was also the last action the USS Monitor saw before sinking.

I really enjoyed listening to this gentleman speak. It reminded me distinctly of hearing James I. Robertson speak and is what comes to mind when I think of the "Virginia" accent. Interesting to think how many of the great generals of the war spoke in a similar way.

Just went in June for a 3rd time. Its amazing and 45 min from Williamsburg. Also, Shirley plantation is nice and not far away too.

Slavery did not begin in 1619 , it was a normal way of life for millennia. I suppose reparations would be in order if all those involved were still here , but seeing that they died hundreds of years ago I guess we need to be about the business of living in freedom .

So very ODD that its ok...to "celebrate" the history of plantations....and "not a more beautiful site" but have NOT pain REPARATIONS to those who were enslaved for over 200 years-Black people built those buildings with home made bricks...(that they made) and are a forgotten entity to the "gloriousness" of those grounds...1619 beginning of slavery...declaration of independence-hollow document that had no interest in ending the enslavement of Black people-"economic backbone"
