Our Berkey Water Filter with ceramic and fluoride filters tests positive for coliform bacteria according to our results from KAR Laboratories. The source, our tap water, tested negative for any bacteria, and samples were collected directly from the Berkey spigot without the use of any additional containers. Therefore, the bacteria problem must be in the Berkey filters, the Berkey container itself, or perhaps something gone awry between our sample collecting process and the lab. Regardless, please filter your tap water at home and keep your family safe! Please use our Amazon affiliate links below to help support this channel (THANK YOU):

I am a water system operator outside city limits, well water. I have to test quarterly. The test bottles are sealed. You can not touch the rim or inside the cap or it will fail. Have to take a torch to inside and outside of faucet first. That is how touchy the tests are. Looking at your video I can see multiple areas that woul cause the test to fail. Did you sterilize your hands? The best unbiased way is just look in the phone book find your nearest EPA Department of Health testing lab. Should be within 30 miles. Go get a test bottle for $20. Wash your hand with dish soap. Wash the inside of the bottom chamber with bleach, run it through the outlet and wash the outside of the outlet also. Put it together run it to get a little water. Gently turn unit around to rinse and run through outlet. Do this 5, 6 times to get bleach all out. Never touch the inside of bottom unit after cleaning. Take the test bottle, wash your hands with dish soap, do not touch top of test bottle or inside cap and fill. Take it back to the test lab and you should have the results in a couple of days. Much easier and cheaper than what you are doing. Do this and I might believe you. By the way there is two types of silver and two types of arsenic. The Dept. of Health lumps them together for some reason.

I've had direct dealings with the EPA and wouldn't trust them as far as I could spit. My yard flooded with run off from the DPW next door...the ENTIRE yard was contaminated. You could see rainbow slicks floating on top and the yard STUNK to high heaven of chemicals. I immediately called the mayor out of concern. he couldn't have cared less and asked me what I expected. I said my yard decontaminated. "Not gonna happen" Next day I called the EPA who came down, went and "spoke" to the DPW workers and that's the last I heard of it until I started threatening to go to the media and get Erin Brockovich involved. The result of that? Threats to my safety and my car windows smashed. The EPA doesn't give a rat's ass, they're only looking out for THEIR interests like every other alphabet soup agency. They don't care about us. This is active genocicde as I see it.

Absolutely BUT...when I went to sell that house, the EPA was up my ass due to previous contamination by Alcoa which was not disclosed to me as I inherited the house...and I couldn't sell it until they did their invasive testing which meant pretty much everything in a container that was scented had to be removed by them, left on my front porch in huge bins for 2 or 3 days while their 'space pods' took air samples -first test came back inconclusive so they had to retest, drilling through my basement. They are another bullshit alphabet city gov't organisation that should be defunded and disbanded.

I, too, am a licensed water system operator. I also hold a laboratory certificate. You are correct on all counts. Also, in addition to not touching the inside of the lid you shouldn't even set it down when it's removed from the sample bottle.

My previous post from this evening has been censored and I am retrying with a shorter version. I have used four pairs (8) Berkey Black Filters in the past two years, 6 of them in the past half year. All have failed after just a few months of filtering tap water. They fail by leaking at the hub at the base of the filter. The glue is defective. The water never gets filtered and instead pours through the nozzle into the bottom reservoir. Initially, the filter works and you can barely hear a drip- drip of normal filtration, but then over time the sound becomes louder and the upper chamber is filtered through in fewer than two minutes. You simply can not rely on a Berkey, especially long term. I have posted this in two sections on Amazon.
@GiveThemWell
@GiveThemWell 3 года назад
I just got notified of your original post, and I cannot seem to find it on this page. We did not censor it. It was as follows: ALERT: I have gone through 4 pairs of Berkey Black filters with the most recent being June 2020, November 15, 2020, and today March 29, 2021. I am a physician and understand the issues cleaning of the Berkeys and filtration. I have three Katadyn $ 365.00 Ceramics pump filters, two Life Savers, and A Survivorman water filter. I have traveled extensively to third countries, India, China, Africa, Philippines, South America and know the issues of contaminated water. I have just thrown away my Berkey system after discovering three out of four of the black filters ( pairs) have had serious, SERIOUS, quality control issues, namely the water in the upper reservoir eventually leaks through the base of the plastic hub at the bottom end of the filter because they have not been properly sealed to the carbon block. The leaks developed over a period of just 2-3 months' use and fewer than a few hundred gallons of easy-to-filter tap water had passed through them. The initial filtration rate was about right but starting last week, I noticed there was a definite louder trickling sound and the upper reservoir was emptying in less than two minutes. Not one, but BOTH filters had failed, and that was the same with two of the other pairs. A third pair I had installed prior to this last one had failed to filter below the halfway mark on the top reservoir. I scrubbed the filters with a brush like the direction said. They were spotless, yet would not filter through the bottom half of the upper reservoir even when filtering only clear tap water since they were installed. I have spent over a thousand dollars on these Berkeys and filters- all wasted. Make sure you listen to the trickle sound after you refill your top reservoir. You should barely be able to hear a drip. When the sound gets louder or the top reservoir empties more quickly than previously, then you know your hub has come unglued. I would NOT, I repeat NOT! rely on these filters in a true grid down situation where you really had to rely on the Berkey to filter your water. All it takes is one leak and you are down for the count from Giardia, E. coli or other coliforms. I would stock up on red dye to test the filters at a minimum monthly, and not the recommended 6 months. I suspect there may be a lot of people out there who do not realize their filters are defective because they have only been filtering their tap water and not really putting the Berkey to the test-- over the long hall. All mine worked initially but failed after just a few months. Disclosure. I have no interest in any water filtration company.

It came from secondary contamination in your bottom tank. wash it frequently. Also, understand that in nature, there is no such thing as "pure water". Pure water is 99.999 free of any particulates and is only used in labs and should never be used as drinking water. U must add minerals back to it to be safe. Natural water has MANY many particles of minerals, salts and metals. These particles are vital to life. -Miguel

Mike is right the thing to do is sanitize the containers and repeat the test. Coliform bacteria can get into all sorts of places even when you think you're being careful and it will reproduce and make a very sensitive water sample test become a fail. Very often when tests fail it is because of the sampling procedure and not because of a contamination problem. Also never lean over your sample container just a bit of material from your skin, face or hair can give you a positive for contamination. A significant point of failure can be the plastic valve used to fill your water containers. You can't really flame it very well to sanitize it and it is right out there exposed to everything and it may be the problem.

White Ceramic candles vs Black carbon block (black Berkey) filters. In a post below, Berkey said manufacturers recommend replacing white ceramic filters every six months. While true, it is also true that car manufacturers recommend buying a new car every 2-3 years. Manufacturers like to sell stuff. Most white filters have an expected life of around 800 gallons. If your family uses two gallons per day, a 2-candle unit will last more than two years. The limitation is due to the carbon on the inside of the candle. After about 800 gallons, the carbon will no longer be performing its job of chemical removal as well. Since the carbon cannot be replaced, the manufacturer recommends new filters. BUT, the ceramic will continue removing bacteria effectively well beyond the point where the carbon is exhausted. The ceramic continues to remove bacteria until you have cleaned the filters 50-100 times. If your water source is pretty clean to begin with, you may have to clean the candles only once a year so they can literally be used 50 years or longer. I have talked to customers who are still using their grandparents' ceramic filters that are 50+ years old. I am not recommending this practice, but if you are in an extended SHTF scenario where clean water might be hard to find for a period of years, you can trust the ceramic to remove bacteria. Plus, they don't have to be primed. How would you prime a black filter without a good, bacteria-free, pressurized water supply? Black filters do have their place in the marketplace, as they do a superior job of removing chemicals. But they are not a replacement for ceramic filtration.

The bacteria has to come from somewhere, and it's entirely possible it's existent in the water reservoir as a result of simple contamination. If your tap water tested negative, there's nothing in the filter, regardless of type, that would spontaneously generate a pathogen. That's the most likely vector. Coliform bacteria is part of our natural flora, and so you yourselves are the source. Could the Berkey filter that type of bacteria out? Probably, but even the world's best filter cannot clean what's in the reservoir. I suggest you clean it thoroughly and disinfect it, then try again.

I prefer the white ceramic 9 inch with silver impregnated in them and activated carbon on the inside core. They work great, last longer, easier to clean and are less costly than the black carbon only filters despite what the salesmen state. The bacteria issue could be any number of factors as you cite and you are doing the correct steps to resolve the issue if any at all. For sterilizing the entire Berkey if all else fails, use a 10ppm chlorine solution and allow enough contact time before running to drain...also run into and up the spigot sight glass if you have one. Then flush several times with regular water and then even ebola will be gone :)
@Bigberkeywaterfilters
@Bigberkeywaterfilters 9 лет назад
+yaahme Please be aware that the manufacturer of the white ceramic filters state that they must be replaced every 6 months regardless of how many gallons are put through them. Many customers who use the white ceramics are unaware of this fact. The black berkeys are recommended as the upgrade to the white ceramics for many reasons (higher contaminant removal rates, etc), however this frequent replacement requirement results in the black berkeys being cheaper as they do not have a time limit where they must be replaced.

I have a question/request about water purity. What about water from a dehumidifier? If the water from a household dehumidifier was filtered through one of these high quality filters, whether the Zero, Berkey, or the Zen systems etc. would it be safe to drink? would it still have any contaminants? This might be a good test for the labs. What do you think?
@Bigberkeywaterfilters
@Bigberkeywaterfilters 9 лет назад
raymondxo yes, that's a great question. The filtration test results for any system would be the same regardless of the water source. So, if there was aluminum in the well water and it was removed higher to higher than 95% levels, same result would apply to aluminum removed from water sourced from a dehumidifier also. Most particles found in the air would also be found in water, so most of that has most likely already covered in prior tests unless there was a specific uncommon airborne chemical that you were referring to.
@raymondxo
@raymondxo 9 лет назад
Thanks for responding. No, there were no specific water contaminants I was thinking of. I just wanted to know if the dehumidifier water was a safe source to filter for drinking water. I have heard some say that the dehumidifier leaves some chemicals, bacteria contaminants etc. I just wanted to know if the filters are able to remove all these contaminants. Basically just a safety concern.
@squirrel1179
@squirrel1179 4 года назад
I know this post is quite old but just wanted to put in that that dehumidifiers have a lot of braised unions in them, and it depends on what kind of material that they use to solder those unions because some manufacturers still use leaded solder because it is not controlled by FDA. The water in them is not meant to be consumed.

I want to find a lab to do similar water tests in my area. Do you have any recommendations on how to find a reliable and trustworthy lab?
@GiveThemWell
@GiveThemWell 8 лет назад
+raymondxo apparently, that's a HUGE problem. We approached our local water company and they wouldn't touch it. Crazy.

Oh well, I had big hopes for Berkey, but I guess I'll just have to invest in a system with UV.

+Andros Noe This Zanga water guy isn't trustworthy. He doesn't follow basic science. Why doesn't he flat out say that someone in his household contaminated the filters with bacteria by handling them with their unclean hands! He even states he is not sure which water they ran through the Zero Water filter when preparing the lab test samples...he thinks it may have been Berkey water!

David Berkey water filters kill the minerals that are in the water that we need? Thank you
@GiveThemWell
@GiveThemWell 2 года назад
Technically, you can't kill minerals. Most necessary minerals come from food.

This Berkey filter is way way overpriced and the design looks so last century; despite on its functionality.

Mine without the flouride the big berkey with the main filters was $278.

And the flouride ones wore on sale really cheap basically I will save around $150 each year just buying the filters and not bottle water! Its waaay cheaper.

So I just got my big berkey. My tap water is 48 ppm (Santa Cruz Mountain Ca.). Anyway, I run my tap water through the berkey and the ppm goes up to 112. Wth?!?! I've run water through it about 10 times now. I am thoroughly confused. Anyone??
@PassTheLoot
@PassTheLoot 7 лет назад
Found this on a Berkey website: Yes, this is normal. the first few flushes of the filters will release carbon into the water and increase the PPM's. This is not harmful and will subside after this dust washes away.

Why would you ask him? He cannot be trusted. He is giving Berkey a bad rap even though he or someone in his household likely contaminated the filter with their dirty hands. He refuses to retest even after a Berkey rep left a comment on how to take sample water correctly.

I’m not happy with my Berkey filter, when pour into my glass kettle and I notice there’s cloudy water and even stained my glass kettle and can see the marks on the glass. My Brita filter is much better and gives crystal clear water after boiling it in my kettle.

I baught one of these. It is horrible. In addition to the discusting toxic flavor of the H2O after it goes through the flouride filter, the construction on the product is cheap pourly designed and a waist of your $. Dont buy this product! Oh and you cant return if you open. So if you think your going to order one to try. Think again, that 300 bucks down the drain.

Brst way to clean water is distilled. I buy distilled. of I decide to filter it I get a plastic funnel, stuff a couple cotton balls in the spiut and put the funnel atop a water jug and por the water in the funnel and it comes out chemically clean every time I filter any water I drink that way if it's not distilled. I test the water...yea! save your money on Burkeys...lol
@GiveThemWell

Interesting. Some people use cotton, charcoal, and moringa powder as a homemade filter, and there's science that supports that may work. How do you test the cotton-filtered water?

We tried to crowdfund water tests, but couldn't get the numbers we needed. Comprehensive impartial water laboratory tests are upwards of $500.
