Some views of trams in Berlin, as seen in April 1990
This video features two tram rides on different types of tram plus trams + closed U-Bahn stations, and more.
The closed stations include Oranienburger Tor & Nordbahnhof on line U6, the latter being where for a brief moment we hear a West Berlin U-Bahn train travelling under an East Berlin street (@ 1' 25")
A more modern view of Oranienburger Tor station (looking in the opposite direction) can be seen here...

It is interesting to watch progres of Berlin transport. They had bus lane on tram track in 1990 but preference for trams on intersections wasn´t working. Very interesting video...

The location where the trams travel almost under the U-Bahn viaduct the streets were full of pavement cafes and there were busy suburban shops & malls. But I was I was disappointed to see the lack of central island loading at the tram stop. Instead passengers still walk out in front of 3 lanes of (nowadays very busy) car traffic. The W Berlin historical tram has been replaced with a reopened U-Bahn. Simon

@citytransportinfo That would then have been a really exciting journey! I did it for the first time in October 1992 but by then everything was under new management!

I visited these locations in former E Berlin in 2005, and they were thriving city streets; still with trams and no different to anywhere else in Germany that still has trams.

7:49 i'm not sure but that station looks like Station Bühlowstraße because the church in the background looks familiar. So does the Comerzbank building on the left (the huge dark-grey one) Today the U-Bahn is driving on that lane. Wonderful and precious scenes of a Berlin that doesn't look like that anymore and only excists in our memories.

I was in Berlin last October. The Eastern side of the city was still quite shabby even after 22 years from the opening of the borders.

Do you mean the West Berlin tourist tram? I do not know the exact dates but think it was between 1972 and 1991. But that is a guess. Simon

Very interesting ! Today it looks nostalgic, but it was not funny to live there ! Many people think it was like living in a romantic museum, but that was all-time reality with no change to break out.

@dronespace Yes, well I bought my first camcorder in December 1989, and then started filming! Alas it was already too late for some things (which I'd filmed in super 8) but expecting many changes to start happening I went to Berlin as soon as the spring arrived. Simon

Where is it? The intersection with trams looks like Chausestr. / Invaliden but it's so different. Where is the elevated tram going? Is it today's U2?

@alanheath Yes, a lot of people find these films to be nostalgic. But its different for me, as I only ever visited Berlin after the opening of the wall in 1989.

@alanheath Alan, I was going to drive to Moscow for the 1980 Olympics, travelling through Berlin and Warsaw and also taking some religious items to distribute to local people, but the boycott saw that trip being cancelled. Other than that I was not confident to travel behind the 'Iron Curtain'. Simon

Do you know that the depart signal from this video was stolen by Train Team Berlin who used it for one of their Add-Ons called "Straßenbahn Berlin-Köpenick" for the Microsoft Train Simulator?

Are you sure, you were in the former East Berlin? Because in general the houses in the Eastern side are now freshly renovated and the houses in West Berlin, especially near to the former border, are in a bad condition. It happens a lot, that tourists mix up the two parts of Berlin and believe they have to be in east Berlin, only because they see shabby houses. West Berlin is full of ugly apartement houses build in the 70s and 80s.

Thanks everyone, I am pleased that you found the video to be of interest. I am sorry to read that Berlin suffers from the 'hoddie/yob' culture. I hate that too. I wish something could be done to to make people behave with responsibility. The 'western' nations seem to be like a fruit which is going bad. It is so sad. I am not watching the new 'Simpsons' film (movie in American English) as Bart Simpson is part of 'the problem' Simon

I am curious as to how this section of Berlin looks today. From this video, it seemed to be a drab, lifeless entity at the time. (I am assuming this is the leftover from Communist rule at the time.) Oh, and Bart Simpson contributes to the hoodie/yob culture? Please, give me a break. It existed long before Bart hit your tv screen.
@CitytransportInfoplus
@CitytransportInfoplus 17 лет назад
btw, re: Bart the Brat, I hate him because at one time he actually advocated it being good to be uneducated dunces! Youth culture should encourage children to be the best they can, not pig ignorant.
