I have pictures of Berlin at this time, but these videos are a breath of fresh air. Thanks kid for posting this. I was a Bornholmer Strasse until 3am, and was sleeping at this time. I made it to CP Charlie on Saturday. I reflected on my time in E/W Berlin, in Kuwait after Desert Storm. Almost unbelieving that I had been privy to have participated in the Freeing of Two Peoples, on different sides of the planet. Not many can say that.

Your kids handing candy and chocolate to the East Germans in the cars was a bit like an updated version of the U.S. soldiers giving chewing gum and chocolate to the German civilians at the end of WW2 😊

I'm actually one of the kids in the video! Now in my 40s...I'm so glad and thankful to my parents that I got to share in the celebrations with the East Germans and that my Dad had a camcorder to record. I knew what was happening was meaningful at the time, but I didn't fully understand the historical significance until years later.

I think this must have been 11/10/1989 since the announcement the wall would open was given at like 7 PM in Berlin, so if the sun is up and a crowd of people are crossing, that would be the next day. The "Charlie's Retired 10 Nov 1989" graffiti at 2:12 also points to that.
@darkWorkOne
@darkWorkOne Год назад
Yes, I think you're right. All my dates are probably 1 day off. I think the Wall came down close to midnight, or the news traveled more slowly (and we were clueless for many hours what had happened), so the "celebration" was the next day.

I was there on the evening of the 9th at one of the border crossings watching as east Germans gathered on the east side of the crossing, that was about 19:30. From the west it wasn't clear what exactly was happening on the other side, but it looked like a huge crowd had formed and was waiting impatiently for something to happen with many shouting. At about 21:00 the east German border guards finally relented and opened the border gates and a huge crowd suddenly started flooding through the gate to be greeted by waiting west Germans. And yes, it was dark by then. I didn't see many TV cameras or reporters on that day, I suppose the media had been taken a bit by surprise. But they made up for it the next day and the day after.

i find it so fascinating you actually been there during those days! did you guys know day before something was happening or about to happen, was there commotions before hand or how was it, I saw your other video, it seemed like a normal day, its so fascinating this insight, i always imagined it maybe ppl knew or felt it what was coming. i was in germany in 95 as a a little kid after the unification, I had no knowledge about east or west, it was only later through school and all love for history

We had no idea anything was going to happen. It was just pure coincidence that we were there on vacation! Luckily my Dad had a camcorder to record it unfold. I was one of the kids in the video, now in my 40s.

In the final days of east & west, an agreement was reached between the respective governments to pay the Soviet & GDR soldiers in western cash for a change. These soldiers did a shopping trip to the west and spent their Deutsch Marks on Levi's 👖, Marlboro 🚬 & Smirnoff Vodka!

Says someone from the States lol. The USA was one of the biggest polluters the world has ever seen! And it still is... And actually the exhaust fumes of a 2-stroke are less dangerous for the lungs of humans because of the bigger particals. Today's engines produce particulate matter that is way worse for one's health. You have no clue!
