It is almost unimaginable that we would see something like this on prime time TV today: a variety show that devotes a lengthy segment to Stephen Sondheim with top tier Broadway talent and thus brings his work to the masses, which the skit’s premise reflects with a wink. Just terrific!
True. Unfortunately, growing up in the 70s, I lost interest quickly when the big, theatrical numbers started. Though already a singer & pianist, I remember turning off this very skit more than once! I didn't know what I was missing!!
Fabulous. I am 72 years old and remember well the variety shows on television. Always a treat to be able to see them on RU-vid, sometimes on PBS. Thanks!
Well, she liked the experience of singing in a diner so much, she did it a second time in a blue, silver-chromium diner during Sunday brunch and brought all her Broadway friends…
The lovely Bernadette Peters... one of the crushes of my youth. Loved this. They don't make TV like this anymore. I wonder how many people nowadays actually know who Stephen Sondheim was? And also the Carol Burnett show. So sad that we don't have entertainment like this anymore! Bernadette Peters is now 73 years old. We have lost a great number of wonderful performers over the recent years. I hope she sticks around for many more years to come.
I think you'd be surprised, Sondheim's a legend and any theater kid who knows their Lin Manuel Miranda knows Sondheim. We're coming up on a theater Renaissance, just wait
Yeah. I'm 23 and have always loved Sondheim ever since my older sister had to watch a Broadway performance of into the woods for theater class. I stole the cd from her and watched and rewatched. He's definitely a gateway for a lot of people my age because everything he wrote was so relatable. His songs help a lot when I'm going through tough times, even now.
@@jchristilton6893 Peters appeared with Burnett a number of times. This is indeed from 1991, an episode of the "new" Carol Burnett Show which included Richard Kind and Jessica Lundy.
Ms Peters came to Vancouver 3 years ago to perform her one woman show with the VSO. MAGNIFICENT!! She wore the lowest cut sequined gown that still permitted a family rating, slit high enough to allow high kicking from which she never for 1-second hesitated. I might add that chiffon was not incorporated into the bodice to disguise aging of the decolettage because there was no need!! FLAWLESS, as was her voice. No raspiness or lowering of key signature; as pure as it was on her album from 1980/81. XoXo 💋💯❤🌹
In my opinion this is an absolute treasure. Both Carol and Bernadette are wonderful performers. Ilove them both. I stumbled upon this video and I could not turn away.
A fan of Burnette since the 60s & of Peters since 1980. Is there a status in the USA similar to Japan's "National Treasure" or Britain's OBE? If there is, I sincerely hope both of these treasures have been duly recognized in such a capacity. XoXo 💯💋❤🌹
@@WellbredNfedKembleTV We have the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Medal of Freedom. Also, simply earning an Oscar, Emmy, Tony or Grammy is fairly close to the same, among the masses anyway. The common citizen would probably be more likely to "bow in honor" (figuratively) to someone with one of those last few awards over the first two, even though the first two should be more respected. But that's America - pop culture consumes. The Nobel Prize would get you into a lot of doors too.
@@charlieinfinite9434 I think I saw a Whitehouse ceremony where Carol Burnette was awarded a medal for her contribution to comedy & culture. ..."I think...' XoXo
This is so fantastic. The way they all know everything about BP. This is entertainment at its FINEST. I wish I could do this sort of thing. True talent.
@@gurvaaz1703 yes was kinda wondering bout that rmends me of somethng i was watching earlier today ayway um i looked her up includng speificaully at 73 as thats not what came up frist, for berndaette pters not to be confused 1 from tbt and my gosh she literally hasnt aged unless shes refused to have older pics on the ntenet of her hmmm
Not sure which biker chick your talking about.... the one that talked to Bernadette is Jessica Lundy.. she was on the remake of the carol Burnett show it didn’t air for long..it was called carol and co....
It's the little touches of comedic genius, like the handing over of the dental floss... and the subsequent straight drop to the ground Carol then gave it. Collaborative moments between fluent artists--whether in music or writing or performance--show the best of what humans can accomplish. It's way more fun to laugh at ourselves than to holler blame at others anyway. :)
@@christycampbell9050 ...and coming up with that bit in the first place, just to fill a moment. Who would think of that! My goodness, that was truly enjoyable, that sketch. I would have liked the tow truck driver to show up at the end, but.... :-)
Oh my----such a fun, and funny skit, with the fabulous Carol Burnett, Tony Roberts..... and the BRILLIANT singing and dancing and comedy...of the ONE and ONLY....Bernadette Peters.......who couldn't be any more talented...if she tried....
How clever is this? It pokes great fun of the fact that Sondheim is an acquired metropolitan taste by having a provincial diner audience of blue collar guys come in to hear a Sondheim concert, which we know they’d never do, while simultaneously putting Sondheim on popular TV show to give a taste of his and Bernadette’s and Carol’s genius.
Carol Burnett a genuine National Treasure and icon. This is pure Carol genius and on television no less that’s what’s sad about today. We’ve lost brilliant, dazzling and clever. Thank you Bernadette and Tony. Kudos.
Was looking for a tutorial on how to play Last Midnight from into the woods. After I saw Bernadette’s performance. Now I ended up here. I’m not complaining though XD
Yes the late boomers had it all in the entertainment line. I haven't watched TV in decades but back then it was wonderful. And Bernadette Peters was the bomb (with that teeny weeny mouth LOL)
Wow ! I too accidentally ran into this video and loved it 😍! Thanks so much! This a real gem and nice touch to see picture of the great Steven Sondheim.. RIP 😥
before i even start watch this video. bernadette is a kicker. love carol and bernadette is off the hook. i would so of loved to lived next door to her growing up and we got to be friends wow. wat a gal. and the bird can sing and bring actual tears to my eyes. i love her, get out the gutter. i love her dammit, leave me alone.
I wish i had a class photo 📸 but i went to grade school (shout outs to BERGEN STREET ELEMENTARY, they just tore it down a few years back 😢) with a girl that could pass for Bernadette's sister. And when i saw her a few years after graduation she STILL looked like her.
if bernadette was willing, carol should of added her on her show with tim conway, havey korman, of course and lionel wagner. bernadette shines brightly under carol burnetts wing. mind blowing baby so love you sweetie yum yum eat em up beautiful beautiful girl
yes i am a dork, gon on say it, DORK. feel better, i love bernadette peters with all my heart she so floats my boat. what a champion actress, comedian, singer, and i'll put money she can dance too. i feel s blessed and thankful to you tube, the internet, all this stuff we witnessed in the past and i am able to see it again. the world is going wacko and nobody knows what to do. i am not gone be miserable in spite of you, so there. i so love and appreciate the good and no time for the bad, just enough to see if i can figure a way to stop it. but, frustrating as can be, maybe i can change some things and go charles bronson on people throwing others on the tracks in ny city. thinkin bout it.
