Eddie Scott Jones didn’t duck anyone. He was head and shoulders above the rest. He didn’t get Fighter of the Decade by not fighting “the greats in their prime.”
Bernard is so mentally tough goes to prison, loses his first pro fight, loses his first title shot, gets robbed in second shot at title, keeps determined and becomes a great fighter, 20 title defenses
can't believe this fight was the undercard to Riddick Bowe. Bowe could have been a legend. But he got lazy, avoided Lennox Lewis and didn't fight Tyson.
Vic Rattlehead Holyfield and George Foreman had hard fights against Alex Stewart, who Tyson blew out. Crazy to think about. Some styles dont match up well with others
Bernard didn’t take enough chances in this fight, he was too hesitant in the center of the ring because of jones speed, easier for me to say behind a keyboard I guess
Nah, you right when someone as fast as jones is coming at you with that hand speed, it's too fast to react and do anything and you know it will be the same next time, so you stand there hesitant
Hopkins was good all around but he was missing something that made him great, Jones had great overall speed, power and reflexes that helped him make decisions on the fly which is why he was able to take more risks than most
With speed comes knockout power and the hurt. Roy's accuracy was also amazing, meaning he was able to hurt opponents with ease, back them into a corner then casually pick them off
Lamotta would not have been fast enough for although he was strong as a bull. Robinson might give him that work but I don't know man. No one before Roy Jones had his level of athleticism at middleweight in any era of boxing.
he was good but Robinson would have beat him and like I said Jake had a iron jaw and would put so much pressure on him yeah he would be slower but he was slower then Robinson also and he gave him work
It was actually really easy for Roy with one hand. He was so many levels ahead of B Hop that he could coast at the end. Roy had a tendency of allowing guys stick around. I had this 117-111 easy work. RJJ hand speed overwhelmed B Hop.
right dude.. All I wanna see is a good fight and fun commentary!! I'm a layman watcher. These guys just complain and bitch the whole time! Makes the boxing fan experience bad...
matthewsinist3r I just listened for like 10 seconds after reading your comment and Merchant said that they were throwing their jabs too short. Is that not constructive? It sounds like you just disagree with their criticisms.
Fascinating! This fight is a lot better than the commentators see. Roy Jones looks impressed by the end, as if he learned more than he had ever before but from one fight! Hopkins troubles him, makes the distance look fairly easy and is slippery enough to make it a close to even match. It will be a thrill to watch part II next! Hopkins is one of the few fighters to make Jones work and think outside his comfort zone- and in his prime.
During the rounds, Hopkins realise that the only good strategy he can implement was to get inside; in the short distance, because with a man with that speed and accuracy you cannot fight in the long distance. Big heart BH
sure did it was hopkins first fight where he faced a guy like roy but i believe if this fight was a few years later it would have been a different outcome . experience is everything in boxing . hopkins wasnt the man yet
Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins have some of the biggest Ring IQs in boxing history. I always enjoy a good slugfest, but there’s something beautiful about tactical boxing.
Ezekiel of Judah goblins body work and mean inside right hand was not spoken by the commentators. Hopkins hurt toy several times with left hooks to the body. Roy won but Hopkins was belittled in this fight by the announcers! Roy was their guy and they wanted it to be a domination to promote Roy and make more money.
@@bill_y4762 that would be an awesome option, mute specific announcer. Except if they start talking to each other and you can only hear the answers of one lol
Bernard Hopkins at this time is a universal soldier, a bummer , brawler and ruffian .. listen to those commentators..Roy Jones legacy will lives beyond this generation.
Jones is the only middleweight in history who could’ve beaten a PRIME Hopkins this easily (if at all). A couple of other middleweights like Hagler or James Toney might’ve beaten Hopkins in his prime, but they would’ve been hard, tough fights. Jones handled the great Hopkins like a sparring partner. Jones (at his best) was probably the greatest pound for pound fighter of all time.
Glad this horrendous era of HBO commentary is dead. They clearly had no idea what they were looking at. And Merchant constantly bashing the fighters and HBO not firing his ass sooner was ridiculous.
@@DivineYT Lol so you rather have mediocre commentary from DAZN and alot of shitty mediocre and lame fights with alot of boxers ducking each other today? Boxing back then was far better than it is now.
@@ScientificEliteEducations HBO's commentary sucked, other than Emmanuel Stewart, Foreman and RJJ. They were constantly crapping on fighters, especially the ones that weren't HBO house fighters. USA's Tuesday Night Fights had great commentary; they knew the personal stories of the fighters, and they did a great job making the audience sympathize with them and understand the stakes the were fighting for.
@@jdvlanka265 He literally fractured his metacarpal in the 3rd/4th rd. No excuses though cuz he made none. He never to this day said he did. He kept his mouth shut...
Damon Richardson most boxers have an injury or fight with hurt hands.part of the sport and is no excuse. I'm sure Roy would have dominated anybody else that night
B-Hop made Roy WORK for this victory. This is the only fight i've seen of prime Roy Jones where he wasn't playing with his food. He knew he couldn't get away with a lot of his usual tactics against Hopkins. This was a close and hard fought fight, which really speaks to both guys' greatness.
James Toney would like to have a word with you, about this statement. See: James Toney vs Mike McCallum I: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7X6e4t7xmS0.html and Roy Jones Jr. vs. James "Lights Out" Toney - November 18, 1994 - HQ: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3vdHJFJeijw.html
So funny to reflect that this fight is on the under card! And to see so much attention given to the main event, given how seminal this fight has become
Nah jui-jitsu skills and teach him to block and check kicks and knees. Yea beats everyone in a street fight, including a 1990s tyson (not 80s tyson lol that's different). Shit he might even beat mma greats in a street fight like st perrie or Silva even possibly just cause jones was so fast and skilled in his youth.
"He was in a 24 hour dry out period to make weight" dam no wonder he moved up to super middle weight real quick in his career. Meanwhile Hopkins stayed as middleweight king for a long as time.
Smoger is my favorite referee of all time. He was able to let fighters be physical but still keep the fight flowing without constantly involving himself..
Peeps who think this fight wasn’t exciting aren’t getting it. Two lively young hungry legends going at it. Jones gets the nod in reaction time/reflex and agility but still highly impressed by Hopkins. He fought very well. Jones like the Bruce Lee of boxing the way he fought back then. Instincts off the charts. Agility with power unpredictable shots.Hopkins fought him in deep waters and had some excellent rushes where he banged away hi and lo able to back him to ropes with very good footwork determination. Both super talented but also super tough. Both took heavy shots and answered right back or just absorbed it like they didn’t feel anything. Gots to do lots of sparring rounds to get your body conditioned for that. People underestimate the super talented boxer’s toughness. Hopkins laid it on him in 8th, clipped him numerous times clean.Lederman a fool. 9 to 0 jones after 9 rounds, pfff whatever
The sequence of movements Hopkins used to dodge, punch, and work his way to the opponent faster than him was just incredible. Hopkins was also deceptively fast in his inside combinations. The commentators were a bit annoying - too infatuated with Roy's speed.
This was a great chess match Two chess players that are boxing strategically If you know boxing this was a great boxing match to watch you can learn allot from watching this fight it’s not always about knockouts it’s about the sweet science hit and not get hit paying attention to his moves or what he going to do anticipating it so you can attack or set up with the Jab to get out the way.
20:40 Larry Merchant doesn't know shit about boxing. Saying he's glad it's chilly so he can stay awake. So he wants both fighters to start throwing crazy stupid punches without calculating the other opponent first. He should have been fired a long time ago with his nonsense. It's boxing this ain't MMA any of that bullshit.
It surprised me that this fight was actually even. If we didn’t know who either fighter was and didn’t listen to the announcers, you would realize every round was even. The announcers just had no idea how good Hopkins was. They thought he was just a solid guy. I wish they had fought again at middleweight, since neither guy was actually at their peak here.
yeah i know thats whats really makes this fight even more intriguing since i believe hopkins probably beats jones if this were 5 years later when hopkins was at his prime fighting trinidad and jones was still the man and hadnt lost to tarver yet . so its like 98 99
theirs a little trick hopkins had during his career too see if his opponent had trained and during weigh ins , confrences etc he would grab your shoulders , tap your stomach , grab your arms etc too see if youve been training he showed his same trick to ward and even ward used it at times lol , very smart little trick not many would even think of doing.
roy Jones jr looked like he didn't take bernard hopkins seriously he thought he would be a average fighter until they both got old he knew he was one of the best
I respect Roy cuz he fractured his metacarpal in the 3 or 4 rd. I'm sure that bothered him but he never made an excuse. To this day he's never talked about it. Outside sources spilled the beans. Hopkins is a tough SOB!!!!
Being a kid watching roy jones this fight took me back he was like ali too me a real special fighter just talented quick and accurate i remember mimcking his moves fighting as a kid ❤
Bruce Lee also has a very unorthodox style of fighting, and it’s not the one you see in the movies. When you’re on an elite level of quickness, like Bruce Lee & Roy Jones, you can afford to fight different than everyone else.
Interesting watching Hopkins try to time the lead left hook Jones was using throughout the fight, never was able to make him pay badly but it was one of the enjoyable things to look for strategy wise in the fight. As many people commented here the commentary by Lampley and Merchant was awful, shows just how little they knew about boxing, only Gil Clancy actually tried to talk about what was going on.
Prime rjj should be top 10 pfp he doesn’t get enough credit he beat one of the best defensive fighters ever (Toney) and made him look like an amateur was so good that he had to go up in weight just to find challengers ...would’ve been 50-0 before Floyd if not for a dq and like kellerman said they both fought in the same era and no1 ever thought mayweather was pfp best
Gotta love the 60 yr old commentators that couldn't whip their selves out of a wet paper bag, yet they have the answers for what these pros should do. 😂
