that would make make Purdie sound lifeless. Drumming is not about tempo, which is analagous to clock time. It's about 'timing" or syncronization between instruments, and the feel of accent. Subtle (either barely perceptible or imperceptible) speeding up and slowing down is essential to making music interesting
He is creating his own inner music and is playing WITH that. Even when doing repeating rudiments, create inner sounds, song, tones inside head and body and throat mouth and head...play along with that. Always, make it musical, make it music! Music, made and heard inside..expressed out to the drums. Always, make it, music,, musical. My own two cents off of your observation.
Yeah, It’s like he’s even sometimes playing the noises he’s making. A certain sound he makes symbolizes a hi hat hit just as he hits it. It’s almost like he plays the drums like chess. Thinking multiple moves ahead.
Check the ghost notes he plays with the fingertips of his left hand when he plays cross stick. Bernard's pocket and groove is so deep it makes the Grand Canyon look like a crack in the sidewalk.
When it comes to grooving', Mr. Purdie is THE BEST EVER. Listen to how much space he leaves, not filling up the groove with useless notes. That is pure genius.
Dan Will You're right man. He has accepted his role in the band and does his part as well as he can. If you can't accept that your job is to keep a steady and groovy beat instead of playing solos, and you're kinda "hidden" behind your kit, you shouldn't really be a drummer.
Kevin N I have always felt that playing quarter note hi hi hat grooves are far more challenging than 8th note HH grooves. With more space in between hits its so much more difficult to match the time perfectly and retain all the dynamics when you have so much space.
This is a REAL musician. Unlike guys like Skrillex who just go to the stage and press "play" button to blast out some shit that sounds like Transformers having sex, or an arrogant douchebag called Bieber who dances like he has some kind of seizure and sings playback.
finnishguy845 Hey listen. If it weren't for guys like you, always mentionning how "This musician is so much better that "..." (Bieber, Skrillex, Lil' Wayne, what you want) I would never have to think about these people.I don't watch their videos, nor do I listen to their music. But, every fkin time, I swear, every goddam time I watch a good video about music, there has to be that guy who thinks it's interesting to comment "wow, that's better than "..." ". What's the result ?? Here:1/ It's obvious 2/ This "joke" is old and overused 3/ BECAUSE OF YOUR FKIN COMMENT, I'M THINKING ABOUT BIEBER, WHILE I'M WATCHING BERNARD PURDIE PLAYING DRUMS !!!!!You know why Bieber's so famous? That might surprise you, but if you guys ("haters") would leave him alone, noone would speak about him and he would disappear. His fame basically lives on people hating on them. So yeah you "didn't start the fire" but you're feeding it (you know, it's like feeding a troll). So, stop talking about them, let them be forgotten, and then maybe you'll stop ruining my days mentioning these morons in a Bernard Purdie video.Thanks.
NAAAAAAASSSSSSTYYYYYYYYY!!!!😱😱 The audience have never heard such an amazing sense of groove and pocket! That’s that OG funk! He puts that stank on it!
As a drummer who has studied everyone from Nick Mason to Raymond Herrera, this is a SERMON on drumming. If you want chops like Gene Hogan - start here.
Why does he make it look so easy? With all honesty, it sounds great when I don't watch the video but just listen, but when I watch, he looks sloppy. Trust me, I don't play drums and I've tried and couldn't.
There's a tape of Buddy berating the bandmembers. Buddy was a perfectionist . Very intense. That's why I like the stylings of Joe Morelo. Looser style.
I sure hope the young folk in the crowd understand just how much of a monster Pretty is. As a bass player I would LOVE to sit with a human metronome like he is. And more than that, a dude that can flat groove his ass off.
Purdie plays drums like David Gilmour plays the guitar. He don't trip on ego pretense, or hide behind flashy gimmick. He has the confidence to bare his soul and play rhythm with real human emotion.
@@MrOhmygoditsben I'd give my right eye to go to that show. Purdie and Gilmour played from the depths of their soul; Pastorius's playing came from a whole other planet. Les Claypool, Mick Karn, and others played a fretless electric bass, but what Jaco did with his defies the musical universe time space continuum. His story is the modern Greek tragedy of Icarus, who flew to close to the sun on bipolar wings.
@@timcwalker not only is JPJ not even close to Jaco, but their styles are completely different. Many famous bassists have tried and failed to immitate Jaco. John Paul Jones is amazing but no one has any business mentioning him and Jaco in the same breath. Your opinions may differ.
@@MrOhmygoditsben Jaco was jazz and fusion. Perdie is rock and funk (way more rock and funk credits than jazz). Gilmore is blues and rock. John Paul Jones is rock and blues. JPJ is way more of a fit than Jaco in this imaginary scenario.
I'm not a drummer, but I'm a jazz music fan and truly respect great musicians, especially drummers. Bernard Purdie is one of the best drummers in the world.
This has absolutely nothing to do with 'musicians' . This is a higher level of honesty an understanding. Purdie is the real deal. If you remember one thing....always remember where 'one' is.
I just love how this man by the name of Mr. Bernard Purdie just puts his rhythmic and intellectual sense of nostalgia, persuasion, and history into his playing while he is exemplifying it and showing it to every audience he plays in front of. That is the kind of old drummer that you could learn and sociably gather lots of musical knowledge from when you're trying to make it into the bigger leagues; especially when it comes to actually playing drums or the (drumset)
People have no clue how awesome this guy really is and so much respect from very well known drummers. Pocket and groove, that's where it's at. He makes it look so effortless.
notice even when he stops playing his internal clock keeps ticking to the groove he established....this ability is vital in good drumming. An amazing player with beautiful dynamics.
He talks in triplets! When he says always rembember where one is....he can easily find it because this man lives and talks in triplets :D it's a genius
MrMcCoGo it’s not just counting rests. It’s remaining aware of the time grid underneath what you are doing consciously. His conscious action here was talking, his focus goes into that so that he can say what he means to say, but he is. still maintaining time underneath.
As I was growing up, I would sit with my great grandmother as she would ramble on about the days of the past. I would just sit there and soak it all in. Listening to BP reminds me of those days. He's telling a story, oh and he happens to be playing drums as well. There are some who don't get his style, or may be bored because he's not flashy, but this dude is the real deal. It's why he is one of the greatest. He's teaching musicality and space in the song. I could sit and listen to this all day. "My friends, always remember where the 1 is."
So eleven of you don't enjoy a guy who has lived his entire life in the pocket and totally owns his craft? What do you object to? The groove? The perfect timekeeping? The incredible technical skill? The spectacular fills? The elegance? The effortlessness?
It's a shame there are those who don't appreciate a diversity of styles. I love the high energy of Carl Palmer, Buddy Rich, Ginger, Cobham etc But I certainly can appreciate the " in the pocket" groove of this.
best thing about him... he just keeps grooving... from his first hit right until the last note... no show off, no techical chatter... just plain music... BP, groove on Sir!
How come almost no one has commented on the 2nd part with Jamey Haddad? The presentation he does is absolutely phenomenal, just as interesting as Bernard and just as important in its specified way if one were to ask me.
I love how non- chalant he is at the beginning of this exercise, but it’s funkier than most spend a lifetime chasing- AND HE’S CARRYING ON A CONVERSATION WITH AN AUDIENCE AT THE SAME TIME. My goodness!♥️ PS You can hear his influence all over Jeff Pocaro’s playing.
AMERICA'S world's wonder Drummer , the true master of Rythm drumming period ! And no one can touch this . ONLY IN AMERICA ,AND IT AIN'T EASY BEING COOL !!!!!
A great creator of a timeless groove. This groove came into existence when Bernard was recording one day with Aretha and she dropped some music on the ground while Bernard was practicing this groove and apparently Aretha said yes! Yes! And, Bernard played this groove in a unique way on “ Until You Come Back to Me.” Amazing how this groove would be used later on songs like Home At Last with Steely Dan and countless others. This groove is ingenious. Enjoy!
Such a creative teacher. The part at 4:10 made be go back and listen again, he really does stay in time and land on the 1! haha made me smile, wasnt expecting it
What a joy this guy brings... He loves this instrument and he has a Deeeeeeeep pocket... Hard to find young drummers that are doing this kind of stuff these days...
thegougeman Yeah this brings inspiration to me, to come back to practice double strokes and these kinds of grooves. Instead of playing gay dubstep drum covers.
I had the true pleasure jamming with Bernard Prudie, Jason Ricci, Gino Mateo and the great Rob P at Harpfest San Diego hosted by Harmonica John Frazer!!
I love how he explains his playing. it's perfect because if you write what hes doing on a staff, it doesn't look difficult. You'd spend the rest of your life trying to make it sound like him though. There's only one godfather of groove, and that's Bernard Purdie. Great video.
Incredible! Purdie seems to have influenced almost every drummer after him. His feel and timekeeping are incredibe, everything he does is extremely useful in a band context - and he talks at the same time and it's clear that the man loves what he does. Very inspiring!
The Purdie Shuffle - I believe I Swing super hard when I play this groove! Shaga-tuh-deetaah-ta-KAAH! - Don't forget to watch the rest - Great percussion !
You mean Luigi Balassoni , Sam woodyard , Dave Black , Carmine Appice , Bill Ward , Dave Holland , Billy Cobham , Alphonse mouzon , Cozy powell , Narada michael Walden , Lesbinks , Simon Phillips , Tommy Aldridge , Reed St mark , Kim kuzz ...were non sense ?
Just found this. This man is a pleasure to listen to in every sense of the word. Beyond charismatic. The singing and grunts are incredible - the drumming is something else. Be blessed x
+ManCave .Productions they have very distinct sense of groove...hard to compare because they're different, it's like comparing an apple to an orange lol
