Director William Friedkin followed up his box office smash The Exorcist with this comparatively little-seen remake of Clouzot’s great The Wages of Fear. A pity because this star-crossed production (including hellish shooting conditions in the Dominican Republic) has much to offer featuring a suitably world-weary performance by Roy Scheider, rain-drenched photography by John Stephens and Dick Bush and a memorably sinister score from Tangerine Dream.

Don't forget the killer soundtrack by Tangerine Dream.

Production designer John Box won four Oscars. Tangerine Dream also scored Michael Mann's THIEF.

Wages of Fear and Sorcerer - definitely both masterpieces, that concept of being desperate enough to take on a job like driving those trucks is instantly relatable yet can be used to create some of the most nerve destroying tension ever put on film. The simplicity of the concept and the fact it is rooted in the characters themselves is why it works so well, the audience believes it's possible and is invested, riding along for the decent into hell.

It was a masterpiece. It had the misfortune of opening the same week as "Star Wars" and was forgotten in the rush. But you should see it. I bought it and I watch it once a year. It's that good.

No home theater and surround sound system can do justice to seeing - and especially hearing - this movie in an actual movie theater. It was just so awesome.

Now many people watch movies on their phone, what a joke. Of course for some years now it's movies about comic books characters that have become so popular, so it's no big loss watching them on a screen measuring by a few inches.

I've never seen a better sequence than the truck on the bridge. Really amazing. Wages of Fear is great in a way that's difficult to summarize but I think it has something to do with it's focus being almost exclusively on the journey and the characters while "Sorcerer" does much the same but also touches on something more global; namely, the harsh environments laborers endure and the literal lifeblood they give.
@J0MBi
@J0MBi 4 года назад
Yeah, Sorcerer also gives the characters a lot more backstory - let's you see exactly how flawed, failed and wretched these men are, before the story offers them a shot at redemption. It makes the experience a lot more bleak, as you have less reason to feel hope that they will suceed but at the same time it amplifies the desire to see our protagonist make it through, and ultimately makes the final moments of the film that much harder hitting.

I can't think of another director whose films are so provocative and masterful, yet gets less recognition than Friedkin, Perhaps Michael Powell. I hope there comes some recognition to this, Cruising, Rampage, and To Live and Die in LA.
@J0MBi
@J0MBi 4 года назад
To Live and Die in LA has got to be the most over looked film of all time in my mind, it takes the themes of The French Connection and runs with it. Giving you this bigger, more intense, more brutal, more stylish and more imaginative story. I can understand why Michael Mann was so upset about it, it's Friedkin stepping on to his niche genre and making the definitive piece of cinema.

It comes as no surprise to me that Bernard Rose, who for me is one of the greatest British directors of his generation, would heap praise upon Friedkin, definitely the greatest living American filmmaker. And Sorcerer really IS that good. The pure physicality of Friedkin's films is what elevates him above all others. No one does tension like Friedkin.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION THE EXORCIST and the 1977 “The Wages of Fear” remake SORCERER, the 70’s was this director’s extraordinary decade though his impact/ influence will remain timeless William Friedkin (August 29th 1935-August 7th 2023) May He Rest In Peace

Great film. I believe the river in that scene was created by the crew through practical effects because the real one had dried up by the time of filming, and sometimes the truck was connected to the bridge so it couldn't fall off, but that's a testament to the result- it looks real. I still find myself leaning to the left when i see the poster

There was a slight problem with its opening: it had to compete with Star Wars. For a more "kid-friendly comparaison", imagine Joe Dante's Explorers opening against Back to the Future...

Great movie, ominous soundtrack...the seemingly unrelated title makes you look for different angles from the get go, therefore making you alert and paying attention. Brilliant cinematography. First heard the Tangerine Dream soundtrack of what I thought was a cheap b series horror flick. I was totally absorbed when I checked it out. Not to be rude but that's art.

I saw it the weekend it came out - opposite of Star Wars. I didn't even knew ST existed at the time. I came out of the theature (at 17 years of age) sweating and drained. I was a fucking ride I wanted to jump on again! It has stuck with me to this day...... especially the final minute of the movie.

Bruno Cremer, the French actor, steals the movie as the cornered corrupt businessman who literally runs away in panic, ending up in the filthiest Third-World cesspool ever put on film. Of all the members of the gifted cast he is the one that memorably registers gentle tenderness and hope, and is at the center of the most startling, hair-raising moment in the long bridge-crossing sequence.
@ClassicRockLivesOn
@ClassicRockLivesOn Год назад
I agree, he was great. The others were all hard killers, but Cremer's character felt like a man who had just made a stupid mistake and didn't deserve to wind up in that village.

Absolutely agree with Bernard, the tension Friedkin achieved is astonishing. The is a long, slow-burning film, but it's payoffs are peerless. Friedkin isn't always a great, but the edge-of-your-seat, clutch-the-armrests intensity of a film like Sorcerer or To Live And Die in LA reminds you that there are some things he does better than anyone.

Love the trailer and the film. I don't think the title was the problem so much as the title in conjunction with the ad campaign. The trailer and TV ads just show the scenes with no narration of what the film is about. Plus it was not really a summer film with more intense and suspenseful scenes than action.
