I feel like I'm watching a tragedy. Bernie tried to save this country from this, that's why he ran. If he was the nominee things would be so much different right now. This is a very dark time in American history and I'm ashamed of the direction it's headed. I don't see any of this ending well.

This was so painful to watch. A panel with a plutocratic right winger (money in politics don't matter and, oh by the way, immigrants are the problem), liberal Clintonista (sure, corruption is a problem but com'on, it's just the rubes who want to hang Hillary, so don't bother with them) and a 'No Labels' DINO with a faux-populist pitch on how 'big government' is not a sulution... Only Bernie offers a vision that could defeat Trumpism in a long term. Bill is right, in four years a better Trump will wipe the floor with Hillary.

He was the first socialist with a realistic chance since... I don't even know. In a broader picture this could have been important nevertheless he lost. But on a broader picture, from the eyes of an outsider, it really doesn't seem as if the american people would be in need of being saved, but foreigners, people in the peripheries of the world, but not worth less, need to be saved from you.

Petar Jovovic Correct, but Bernie couldn't beat Hillary either. The debate he had with Hillary was one of the biggest PR blows to his candidacy. The guy only ever repeats the same "millyunahs and billyunahs" or "whall street bankehs" line and expects people to not realize he said nothing of substance. He had no plan, no strategy, and zero self-awareness. Trump would probably kill to have that kind of advantage right now.

You won't vote for a candidate who denies climate change, just one who will do nothing about it. 46 percent of voters voted for the lesser of two evils in 2012. That's more than enough to get both the Greens and the Libertarians into the debates, and the number are bound to be even higher this time around.

sorry that doesn't hold water supposing during the country's time of prosperity that the GOP so often likes to wish we'd go back to (the 50's and 60's) is when the rich were taxed the most and they didn't flee. This is nothing but a red herring argument. The rich were taxed sometimes as much as 90%. FDR is in line with Bernie on this and he's who helped deal with getting the rich to pay their fair share. “The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt “We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace-business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering. They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob. Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me-and I welcome their hatred.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt “Better the occasional faults of a government that lives in a spirit of charity than the consistent omissions of a government frozen in the ice of its own indifference.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt “Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but cooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt “True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made. Freedom” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt “I think we consider too much the luck of the early bird and not enough the bad luck of the early worm.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt “Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them." - Franklin D. Roosevelt” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt Here he was right: “More striking still, it appeared that, if the process of concentration goes on at the same rate, at the end of another century we shall have all American industry controlled by a dozen corporations and run by perhaps a hundred men. Put plainly, we are steering a steady course toward economic oligarchy, if we are not there already.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt, Looking Forward “True regulation is for the equal benefit of the consumer and the investor, and the only man who will suffer from true regulation is the speculator or the unscrupulous promoter who levies tribute equally from the man who buys the service and from the man who invests his savings in this great industry.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt, Looking Forward

I'd be inclined to agree, but he is not really too in touch with the ignorant bigots out there. The ones who believe illegal Mexican immigrants are actually stealing American jobs, and that black people are like a different species of human or something. See, these people don't care that they are being fucked raw by billionaires. They just care that Jose took their non-existent job, because they lack a thing called cognizance. They listen to people (funded by billionaires) who say billionaires are magic job creators. This is, of course, a myth. It sounds pretty nice, like if capitalism worked it could be true, but it's complete BS. Bernie knows this, but he doesn't know how to explain it to people who have already decided to give their brains to the billionaires. Nobody seems to know. It's most likely that we will have to wait for those ignorant bigots to die off before we see any real change in this country. They are mostly baby boomers, so they'll mostly be gone within the next 20 years, I'd estimate.

America is one of the most difficult countries in the world to immigrate to. You either need to have an immediate American relative (wife/husband/mother/father), marry an American, get a job an "American can't do" or be rich enough to start a business there. One of the greatest myths in America is that it's easy for anyone to get into the country.

funny, america has in total by far the most immigrants in the world (and relative also one of the most), and yet it's "one of the most difficult countries in the world to immigrate to" according.. to your opinion? i think facts & numbers are a little closer to the truth than your impression. as a little info: you don't need a citizenship to live in the US, any permit will do. visum temporarily, or greencard permanently. they're not that hard to get.

@staxstix
@staxstix 7 лет назад
a1ntcry1noveru i'm not american, i got a 1-year-long visum for an internship super quickly without any problems, even got to stay a little longer to travel afterwards. i have several friends with a longer-term visum, none of them had actual problems getting it - some of them are now in a relationship and apply for a greencard. the US gives out hundreds of thousands of visa annually - that doesn't include greencards. as long as you have a (relevant/skilled) job and are of any use for the US, it's not hard at all. which should be self-explanatory for immigration anyways: if don't have a job, don't have family in the US, are not prosecuted/a refugee, why even come to the US? what is a justified reason other than abusing the US for a higher living standard? you obviously can't give permission to everyone who just wants to stay for the fun of it - you'd have 2/3 of the world knocking on your door. what would you change about immigration laws?

Bernie didn't answer the question on immigration
@porphyrios24
@porphyrios24 7 лет назад
Yeah. Total dodge. Which is weird since high levels of immigration (legal and illegal) affect blue-collar Democrats just as much as blue-collar Republicans (and now high-skilled workers who are being replaced with an alphabet soup of sham visas meant to bring in standard computer programmers for tech companies at half the price of Americans). So you would think a champion of the working classes would be all over it. But Dems are controlled by big business lobbyists as well as far-Left open borders lobbyists, and the Democratic party would like to amnesty the tens of millions of illegals in the country to give themselves a massive voting block, irrespective of the damage this would do to blue-collar Americans. Since Sanders is getting his marching orders from the Dems these days, he was probably told to avoid any talk of immigration (since most Americans on both sides of the political spectrum want less of it). He sold out. Sad.

No, he brought the question to a bigger problem... Fact is, if one accepts the studies made by a number of organisations, that more people are leaving the US, than coming in. That many of the people from South America, are moving back from the US. But what should be the all consuming issue in this election is money in politics... The US has legalized corruption to such an extent, that it boggles the mind. The Ukraine has just been forced to accept staff from the EU, to help deal with it's problems... Those problems are less severe in many cases, than in the US.
@Cangeltibon
@Cangeltibon 7 лет назад
That's the thing there is no immigration problem. Our immigration is at net 0 meaning we have just as much people leaving as are coming in. They do the jobs that Americans refuse to do, they pay taxes (every time they buy something they are paying taxes) but don't collect finical assistance of any kind save for emergencies, they have a LOWER crime rate than the general public and their children are full fledge tax paying American citizens. Instead of trying to stop it at all cost what we need to do is make it easier to go and come. If you don't want them here but you want the benefits they provide then make access easier. Instead of a wall create a well regulated work program with a payroll and worker safety taken into account. The pennies they would take home to their families would pale in comparison to the building and up keep of a wall that wouldn't work anyway and even today, this heavy border control is not effective but we are spending money on it. Create a data based where people are able to free move between the borders but known criminals are black listed, we get more local help if we genuinely only tried to stop crimsons rather than lumping everyone together. In short borders don't keep people out, to provide for their families people will do what they must, we make it so that they must bring everyone over and stay here forever rather that simply allowing people to work then go home.

I was a little disappointed at Sanders in this discussion. When Andrew brought up the issue of illegal immigration, Sanders just immediately started to recite his talking points. Yes, money in politics is an important issue, but I doubt it has a direct connection to illegal immigration. I think Democrats should NOT be afraid of talking about securing the border and e-verifying American employers to reduce illegal immigration. It probably won't help those Trump voters much, but it can make them feel better. And in politics making voters feel better is something you have to do.
@stupidkitty84
@stupidkitty84 7 лет назад
E-verify is not fool-proof. I'm an HR manager at a factory and we've had a few employees that were using someone else's identity, and this was only the ones we knew about because the real individuals contacted us personally or through other agencies like the SSA. If we want to tackle immigration, we need to give illegal immigrants temp status so that they may be brought out of the woodwork, tracked, monitored, pay taxes, and not completely fudge up other legal citizen's lives. When they have to use someone else's social security number for employment, they in effect add to the income of the actual individual, which messes with their ability to claim unemployment benefits, disability, and pay exorbitant taxes on income they never received. It's a disaster. We should give the illegals a way to become citizens by proving they can be responsible, law abiding citizens during a trual period, say 10-15 years at least. A wall most definitely will not stop immigration. The great wall of China and the Berlin wall never stopped much of anything. We have illegal immagration on our Canadian border, do we plan to wall that off, too? What about the illegal visa overstays? Bernie has the right idea on immigration, even though he didn't delve into it on the show. He's also 100% right about our biggest barrier to accomplishing things and bettering our economy and society - money in politics. That even ties in with immigration, since the elites accuse the immigrants for why our economy is failing and we don't have enough jobs. It's a poor scapegoat, and total BS.

Exactly. The oligarchs Sanders rails against LOVE illegal immigration because they want an underclass of cheap labor that doesn't demand anything.
@porphyrios24
@porphyrios24 7 лет назад
Dems (and the Left generally) NEVER want to talk about immigration. They've abandoned their blue-collar base to pander to the open borders crowd, the behemoth of immigration lawyers who depend on high levels of immigration to keep their business going, and the big business lobbyists who want to undercut American wages with cheap foreign labor. So whenever immigration comes up the Dems ALWAYS change the subject. @stupidkitty84: 1.E-Verify is 99% effective. In other words, IT WORKS. Which is exactly why the open borders crowd and the big business lobby always howl against it to their minions in Congress, which is why it has never been mandated nationally. Businesses want the cheap labor and the Dems want the potential voters. 2.If illegal aliens are using someone else's SSN it doesn't matter if they're contributing to benefits they'll never collect: IDENTITY THEFT IS A CRIME. THEY ARE COMMITTING FRAUD. On top of which they're already in the country illegally. END OF! Illegals can prove they're law-abiding by not entering the country illegally, for a start. If they're caught in violation of the current law then they should be punished according to current law: which states that anyone here illegally is subject to deportation and shall be barred from the US for 10 years. After that they can apply to come LEGALLY. It's not difficult. 3.What do you mean, "What do we do with visa overstays?"? Deport them, obviously. 4.Not sure you've been paying attention when you say "the elites accuse the immigrants for why our economy is failing". The elites are totally FOR high levels of immigration (legal and illegal). They get the cheap labor! 5.What's BS is the notion that Americans are scapegoating immigrants. This is about our unsustainable immigration POLICY, which permits more people into the US than there are jobs for while unemployment is high and 94 million Americans are out of the labor force. Their is no "labor shortage" in America. There is a JOB shortage. It's unbelievably stupid to import 1.5 million (mostly low-skilled) people into the country every year. Immigration is not something that just HAPPENS. This is a government policy, and like any government policy it can be changed and should be changed to benefit AMERICANS since, after all, governments are elected to protect the interests of the people who ELECT them. Employers who hire illegals should obviously be fined and sanctioned. But Illegal aliens have to take responsibility for the laws they broke. And the government (particularly the President) CERTAINLY has to take responsibility for not enforcing the current immigration laws and for not changing what is clearly an immigration policy harmful to Americans.

The guy on the left was talking about immigration and Bernie cut him off, said it didn't matter, then went back into his stump speech that didn't win the nomination. Maybe Democrats could win those 20 states if they'd listen to what people care about and address those issues instead of telling them those issues don't matter.
@mikeh0212

Well illegal immigration is at a 13 year low in the US and Obama has deported more immigrants than any other president in history, so as of right now it's not a huge issue facing our country. Stop believing what you think is happening and actually learn what IS happening in our country.

Guy #1: People care about immigration, damnit! Guy #2: They shouldn't, the facts say immigration isn't really a big problem. Guy #1: But the PEOPLE say it is, idiot! Having fun in your echo chamber?! Guy #2: We're changing the subject because your subject isn't an actual important problem Guy #1: IDIOT LEFT WING LIBTARD This is basically what Trumps campaign is all about: pretending there's all these catastrophic problems and that America is in the worst condition it's ever been in, and HE'S the only one who can make it better. Problem is, most people can see through his bullshit and understand America is actually doing pretty good right now(The average Trump Primary voter had a household income of $72,000).

@pacificalliance3782
@pacificalliance3782 7 лет назад
lukassnakeman Because immigration itself is a deflection from more serious issues. Securing the border is used by republicans as a way to deflect from the "how are we going to actually help you" part of the campaign.

lukassnakeman you honestly think immigration is worth Bernies time? That was a conversation about a non issue and Bernie turned to real issues. Immigration is down if you do your research end of story; Trump has people brainwashed.

But that was Sullivan's point. I agree that immigration is a non-issue ... But you can't say that and yet be surprised that men like Trump easily collect voters -- the very voters you alienate by not caring about the same things they do. This point, surprisingly, went over the heads of Sanders, Maher, and most of the people in these comments.
@Junebug89
@Junebug89 7 лет назад
Coolidge Dollar Well I agree it was his point, I question whether it was accurate but you're right, people did misunderstand him. Actual issues don't matter as much when getting elected as what people perceive to be actual issues.

I love Bernie, but he needs to stop speaking about the problems like talking points and discuss actual solutions in detail. He had the same problem with a 1-1 interview with Bill earlier in the year. You can only get so far with talking points before you sound like a broken record and no follow-up. Yes, the electoral system is fucked up. Yes, billionaires should pay more taxes. Yes, people deserve affordable health care. We know. You've said that over and over. What are you going to do about it? I know you will, I just want to know how and so does everyone else.

Bernie does seem to be looking farther down the line than the rest of the panel. Andrew Sullivan does bring up a valid point, however, when he asks what is the plan when smart automation puts ever more workers out of a job? Bernie knows, but it's not something most of the American populace is ready to consider. The immediate need is cut off corporations from influencing politics, then force corporations to begin serving the common good as they should.
